Cold and the effect on models

Recommended Posts

So I recently moved to a new state (Minnesota) and a new house, this of course means new storage area for my models. I am considering storing models in my basement/heated garage and wanted to see if there were any negatives for storing models in cool temperature areas. Having lived predominately in warm areas I have no idea what cold temperatures can do to models.

Can one of you guys help me out here?

Some glues do not set well when left in the cold making the pieces brittle and easy to break and sometimes frost up. If you have a heater on when working on models, you might want to bring freshly glued models inside, use accelerant or leave heater on for awhile to get a stronger bond. I noticed this the most when working in a garage and with metal parts. Plastics and resins may turn out okay regardless.

I live in one of the coldest climates there is can get below -40 C / F (oddly it can also get to 35C / 95F in the summer). Never had a problem storing my models in the cold at all. Your house/Condo/Apartment will still be maintained at a reasonable temperature.

Also working in the transport industry, I know that cases and cases of models are subject to the most brutal of temperature extremes. It is remarkable how durable these models can be.

I know extreme cold can make superglue extremely brittle, because I put models in the freezer to break them apart if I need to. It works very well. As long as you're not dropping a box of cold models (believe me, dude, Minnesota is a VERY cold state) on the ground I think they'll be okay. I personally wouldn't really feel great about leaving them out there but to each their own. Sounds like plenty of others have done so to no detriment.
