Show (and Tell) me about your Infantry Squads

Hey folks!

Now that the ETL is over, I want to start focusing on building my army. I will hold off some painting until the next contest is announced laugh.png. I'm looking ahead to what my army will look like. I know how many tanks/Vehicles and which ones in particular I'll have in my army. Where I'm having a problem in with my Infantry Squads. How large are your blobs? How do you arm them? Do you keep them cheap or do you load them up? As it stands right now I have 3 x 10 man squads, and I have them loaded out like this:

Platoon 1:

IS 1 - Vox, Flamer, Power Weapon.

IS 2 - Vox, Grenade Launcher, Powerfist

IS 3 - Vox, Grenade Launcher

I Plan to blob these three into one combined unit. I'll replace the 2 extra Vox Casters with regular troopers. I was then thinking I'd make a second Blob consisting of 2 more units like this:

IS 4 - Vox, Heavy Weapon Team (insert preferred weapon here)

IS 5 - Heavy Weapon Team (insert preferred weapon here)

Now if you have Heavy Teams in your squads, do you still put in a flamer or grenade launcher or other special weapon?

How many squads do you usually run in your platoons?

thanks for the input!

I used to like big old blob of about 50 or so with framers and bare bones sergeants. Stick an =][= in for prescience and frfsrf and you've got a whole lot of dice to roll, even for overwatch and combat. That was until a daemon prince used a terrible power on my that killed around half the squad through forcing strength checks or something.

I have a couple of PCSs, one a barebones ones and a second quad-flamers. The second is used, mounted in a chimera, as points and potential foe dictates.
The barebones one:

As for the squads, I have four. They are not painted up to distinguish between squads, so I can swap weapons about as necessary but the basic loadouts are:

IS1: flamer and autocannon

IS2: flamer and autocannon

IS3: grenade launcher and autocannon

IS4: grenade launcher and missile rocket launcher

The latter heavy weapon was chosen before 7th edition.
I know some players favour hiding their heavy weapon teams in infantry squads in order to provide ablative wounds, not favouring heavy weapons squads as they are deemed easily killed...while others like to separate them so that the HWTs can target enemy armour leaving the grunts to shine their flashlights at enemy infantry.
My advice would be to experiment with both and see which serves you best.

As for special and heavy weapons, I generally don't put melta or plasma in BS3 hands, nor would I put weapons heavier than autocannons, heavy bolters, rocket launchers or mortars. If I did a lascannon HWS I'd keep a commissar or other IC with them to boost Ld (for orders).

No photos to show as of yet as I don't have any finished platoons yet but this is how I run mine:

PCS with 3 Flamers and a Vox

I try to cap my spending at 65 points a squad which translate to a Vox and Flamer in every squad and either an Auticannon or Heavy Bolter.

*Flamers are great on BS3 troops and multiple overwatch covers a charge in your gunline.

I tend to run a 20-30 man Conscript squad in every platoon too which is accompanied by a priest. This is used as my blob squad/human shields and means I can keep my Infantry Squads unblobbed - mainly as it's a personal preference but I also like to be able to focus each squads firing than have to fire everything at one.

I built my squads together with rule of cool in mind rather than any great gaming plan so don't take my loadouts as being any good...

I have also kept the HW out of the squads and in their own team but I can always swap and change them around if I want to.

All my squads have vox cause they look good.

I have enough bodies in the queue to make about 50ish new footsloggers and 3 WHF figures I plan to use as priests so I am also interested to see what other people think.

Sorry for dumping all the photos but you did ask for it ;)

Platoon command squad

God, I love the chocolate chip guys!!!

Um...I have nearly 250 metal cadians, over 180 of them painted...but only ~90 in the current camo scheme...What I actually field is:

six of these:

If they're vets, then that's all I field, if I field them as infantry squads they need a pair of platoon command squads like this one:

gallery_13203_9402_814596.jpg

...and, if I'm not fielding Pask, sometimes even when I am, Here's my standard company command squad, talking advantage of BS4:

That's me in the middle, swilling the coffee. The camo is different because he is wearing a combat vehicle crewman uniform. Since I tend to spam up to nine chimeras, I figure the commander of a mechanized infantry company should not wear a ground-pounder's uniform...

i've got over a hundred infantry models, and usually field them in platoons although with the new dex i'm also testing out cheap veteran squads

http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb281/amorfatipictures/DSC_3865_zpsb89f61f2.jpg

i usually join 2 infantry squads together into a 20 man blob, armed with meltaguns. those 20pts will most likely never destroy any tank (none so far), but they offer the squad some versatality, and make my opponent think twice about coming closer with his vehicles, which is in my opinion 20 pts well spend.

i used to field heavy weapons in all infantry squads as well but given how everything became scoring i now usually leave this to 1 single platoon consisting of 2 infantry squads with an autocannon and an autocannon platoon command squad. i haven't bothered with heavy weapon teams anymore since the wyvern and other artillery platforms will always be superior to them

I don't have the time to dig out some troopers, but I'll see if I can make the time in the near future!

My bog standard Platoon that I always start with when building a list is:

PCS:

- vox

IS:

- vox

- flamer

IS

- vox

- grenade launcher

HWS

- mortars

This is usually supplemented with:

IS

- vox

- flamer

HWS

- heavy bolters

I can rely on then to hold objectives and take care of enemy infantry well for a pretty good price leaving me free to play with the rest of my points :) Those changes can also result in the Platoon being modified of course, for example Chimeras or different weapons but every list begins life with these reliable guys :D

Hi,

I don´t play very often but when I play big games. These are the two reasons I keep everything very simpel:

10-men (and women:-)-squats with a Chimera if possible and one special weapon.
