New Codex - Tips and Tricks?

So I've just gotten the new codex and figured we could help each other out by listing nice combos that we figure out with the new stuff. To start us off I have two things that I will be sure to try:

WGBL with Thunderwolf and Black Death. At 125 points he is a bargain. You have to pick your fight tough. since he has no Invul save, but still. He can be shot against anything with the 8 S6 attacks on the charge. =)

Stormfang with an Iron Priest and a few servitors in it. A gunship that doesnt die. Nice, huh? =)

Do any of you have nice combos or thought about nasty stuff that the new codex brings? Post it!

Give the thunder wolf guy the armour of Russ - now he is much more survivable!

Swap out the servitors for a pack of grey hunters or blood claws. If from a combined arms detachment they get objective secured. If from a wolves unleashed detachment, they get outflank (with the flier) on a 4+ and more reliable reserves rolls. The iron priest is an IC now.

Hone stly I think one of the best options for a challenge bear stick is a wolf guard battle leader with thunder Wolf, armor of russ, and the fang sword of the ice wolf.

That guy in a unit of thunder wolves is a pretty Gnarly death star.

Hm, I was toying with the idea to get 4 WGBL on TW, 2 WL on TW, 3 Iron Priest on TW and 3x 2 TWC. This gives you a lot of threatening units but none of them will justify to sacrifice a squads firepower on. Toss in some GH in Rhinos, 2 Stormfangs and Grimnar in his Chariot and you have yourself a massive amount of butthurt for the enemy.

Skeletoro - Yeah, the armour of russ is pretty neat. With that, however, he becomes a little more pricey and not as easy to "throw away". In a 1500 or 1750p game the 125 is quite easy to justify. With the armour, or a storm shield or something like that, he is at least 155 or more. Still might be worth it tough. He can chew through squads of whatever that dont have a power fist quite easily.

And the IP and servitors is mostly, in my mind, for the repairs. With 5 servitors, he is guaranteed to repair a hullpoint or a weapon each turn. But the GH+IP combo is quite good as well. Repair and objective secured... very nice indeed.

jbickb - Only downside to that is that the sword is only AP3. :( But I think thunderwolves with a couple of WGBLs should be quite nasty however you do them. Quite cheap as well.

On the subject of Grey Hunters, due to the wording you don't have buy every one a CCW. So if you don't want to spend 20 points to add in CCWs to the squad just spend 2 points on the hidden power weapon guy or if you get the fist, skip his CCW if you buy for the whole squad.

Yep; good trick.

Would a wgbl/wl, Helm of Dur, twm, claw and armour of russ be too pricey? That would be a beast for rerolls to hit, to wound, str 6 AP 3 rending (right?)?

That setup would be 240 points for a WL or 175 points for a WGBL.

Or you could have instead of the claws, the Black Death for 5 points less. This way, you get S7, AP2 and +3 attacks if you are outnumbered. The only downside is that it's all at I1. Ofc for that you have your T5 and 2+/4++ and the other TWC around your Killy McKilly of the killy kills.

I was looking for all the rerolls and nerfing the attackers initiative so you could be sure to chew through any characters and try spill over wounds on to the rest of the squad. If a wgbl has 3A plus 2 (1 for twm, 1 for charge/counter) it would be good to make all of them count. Does seem very expensive already but I guess you get what you pay for.

I think there are more then one way to build killy WGBL/WLs, but they are all quite expensive. Imo, as soon as you pass the 150p mark the guy needs to  have a real place in your list. With say 100-120p guys or squads they can be one-hit wonders or stuff that doesnt do that well every game. Like my plasma scout squad for the previous codex. Plasma gun, 2 plasma pistols and 2 bolters. 115p or something like that. Cheap, does the job of scaring the opponent and killing stuff in the backfield before they die.

After a more careful look I think the BCs are the real winners of this codex. Regular ones for 12p, with Jump Pack for 14 and Bike for 20? Sounds very very good to me. Sure, WS/BS 3, but still loads of attacks and T4 3+ save.

It is only ap3, but it is also rending and helfrost which means it should be just as effective as ap2, and at initiative.

Sorry,  Im lost here,   which cc weapon has the hellfrost special rule?

Also a quick note,   WG in TDA got a cool little trick for spare wounds.   You can swap your power weapon for a storm shield for free.   SO 33 points for a 2+3++ "spare" wound to go at the front of your unit or a cheap 3++ unit to go with your beatstick wolflord.   You also keep your stormbolter so you also have the options of a really survivable mid field shooty unit.  330 points for 10 stormbolters with 2+3++.     Thats 120 points cheaper than marine equivalent,  they can still shoot and don't auto strike last in combat and if they do get charged,  they still have 3 attacks each.  I would throw a wolfpriest or ulrik with these guys and they are rerolling a lot of dice for shooting AND combat.

Thanks! I thought that was frost weapons for a second. Its shame they didnt get it, they are basically expensive power weapons still.

Ai between them, TWC and maybe some legion of the damned allies you are rocking a 3++ army mostly. Now you just need somthing that can reliably grant a reroll and you are set smile.png

Thats a hsame about swiftclaws,  I was just arguing why they are better than wolfguard on bikes because they have the same ammount of attacks but obviously should of read my codex better.  I would maybe go wolfguard after finding that out.

One more thing I have just noticed.   Because wolfguard are now part of the grey hunters squad,   you can finally have a wolfguard with combi,  plus 2 x plasma guns all fit in a pod now.  3 x plasma coming out a pod for 225 points isn't bad.   If you can get within 6 inches of ulrik you'll be rerolling those annoying 1s too :)

Hi,

I'm hearing thoughts about the Iron Priest being an HQ now. But I'm not seeing thus in the codex. They are in the elite section ... am I missing something?

HDL

Edit .... ok I see the IC part for his special rules now. So this means he can join other units?

First impression for me is that Thunderwolves are the way to go, what I've picked up from a quick browse;

Attention needs to be paid to both the Thunderwolf characters, just look at their special rules, Deathwolf- str8 Frost Axe on the charge, Thunderwolves with him are str6!, Similar thing with Canis, str7 on charge, all stubborn as well, Thunderwolves got a fair boost with a drop in points along with all having access to all Melee weapons and rending being inclusive, feeling pretty happy with my Thunderwolf army at the minute.

Who says close combat is dead!

Can't wait to get them out for a game.

yep. I am trying to plan how to convert 2 or 3. msn-wink.gif I reckon buy a finecast techmarine, and a pack of forge world medusan immortals. Cut up the backpack on the techmarine and split the arms between several iron priests. Should be able to do four separate servo arms with the one model.

The medusa immortals strike me as particularly suitable models to use as a base for iron priests. Pop a couple on thunderwolves and a couple on foot, and divvy out the servo arms between them.

Hopefully the iron priest helm from the stormfang kit will be obtainable relatively cheaply from bits stores msn-wink.gif
