Another which Legion post...

Ok, so I just cant settle on one legion but I really really need to. Going off the whole Legion that appeals to my nature I have narrowed it down to three possibles. I have at some point created models for all three and painted two.

Night Lords

I like the way they operate tactically, striking from the shadows, causing the maximum amount of damage before withdrawing before they find themselves on a battle they cant win. Colour scheme is cool, although I have never painted it. I like the general mentality. A flawed tool which did what it was made for but is hated by all. A twisted sort of honour that would never be understood by other Legions. Dark souls who have self exiled themselves.

Not really a fan of the overuse of disembered body parts and flayed skin. The odd skull and helm I get but think the Night Lords may go overboard.

Raven Guard

Again, love them tactically. Small groups of infiltrators paving the way for hard hitting assault specialists. Lone assassins taking out enemy command structures. They are one of my first hobby loves, and I am fairly comfortable with the paint scheme, although I worry all that black with some white may be a bit dull. Also not so keen on their extended background. Extermination is cool but the rest, meh. If I was to go with them then I would focus on Terran nomads, dark souls(there are a few running themes here) banished to the edge of the galaxy.

Alpha Legion

My struggle for the past 2 years. I love all the infiltration stuff, the one of many, and well the whole vibe. Until I read the battle for Panama (or what ever its called). I didn't like the legion on a large scale. I think the Alpha Legion would be best left as a small kill team possibly zone mortalis force. But i really want to work on something bigger i scope. Scheme wise, they bug me a bit, but I think i have something i like.

So thoughts? Have spent all day thinking on it and its driving me crazy(er) constantly changing my mind.

I think we can easily say that you should primarily do one of the first two, either Night Lords or Raven Guard, and do a small force of Alpha Legion second. Like you said, it's easy to add a little Allied or Zone Mortalis force later on.

As far as the first two... Good luck. Sounds like you like them for the same reasons, generally.

After some grumbling, the Sorting Helmet says, "Raven Guard!"

As you said, it was one of your first loves, your comfortable with the scheme plus have a feeling of challenge not to allow it to get boring. Own it!

It's not just black. As shown on the vet sergeant., tactical, assault and recon marines above, it's black, grey, and white!

Make it so!

Between the Night Lords and the Raven Guard. Its a tough one though. They both have similar tactics, so I think it all comes down to which color scheme you like more. Ultimately, I would go with Raven Guard. I've always had a deep respect for them.

Regardless of which legion you choose, good luck! :)

I think if you're going to go with RG, then DSSgt7 hit the nail on the head. Change things up a bit.

For example, I am a Templars player. In theory, my scheme is black with white shoulder pads. But I don't like heavy contrasts, so instead, I went with greys.

So my black is Vallejo German Grey, which is a dark grey, that isn't black, but still dark. For my shoulder pads, I went with Vallejo Lt. Grey (995). When I need white I use Vallejo's Off White, adding a touch of Baneblade Brown to soften the white.

Then think about weathering and battle damage. Some well patterned chipping can help add some character to your models and give you an army you can be proud of.

You have license to challenge the norm. Use it.

Cheers,

I disagree. The newest codex shows them as being black and white, so that is their current color scheme if you ask me. I have never seen them in grey shoulder pads, or anything of the sort. Granted, a lot has probably changed over the years. So you do have a point.

Reading your descriptions of each, in your own words, it seems Night Lords bring to the table more positives than negatives. Just dress them up without the trappings you don't like, and you would be left with almost no negatives.

Always remember, stick to the rule of cool and you can't go wrong.

What is this "newest codex" and "current color scheme" you speak of?

The clock on the wall says 30K here in the Age of Darkness forum. Horus Heresy. Forge World resin, fresh as newly unpacked box of bolter shells.

A lot will surely change over the coming millennia to 40K. biggrin.png

This is the 31st millenium, brother. The new Space Marine Codex holds no sway over us.

The color schemes shown above by Archangel are a small handful of new schemes of the XIX Legion, from the Forgeworld Horus Heresy Book 3 Extermination. We of the Age of Darkness section look to the FW and BL books as our Tomes of truth.

This World Eater and his bloodthirsty company of fellow maniacs refute your claim of "codexes."

This is 30K, baby. Long before our spiritual liege penned that abortion of a document and broke up the Legions. Every single Legion published by FW shows a variance in color schemes, be they to distinguish between members of different companies, fleets, campaigns, or other organizations.

Come on, the smallest of Legions were still around 100,000 Legionaries strong. Given the scale of the Great Crusade and the size of the galaxy, do you really think that every Raven Guard would even be issued with the same "Corax Black" paint for their armor?

And this is before taking the use of battle damage to add character and the fact that Corax "exiled" some of the Terran members of his Legion to far corners of the galaxy.

Were the Salamanders not smaller? I heard something about them almost being wiped out?

The Salamanders were almost wiped out at the drop site massacre, which occurred at the outset of the Horus Heresy. Before that, I believe their numbers were strong.

Were the Salamanders not smaller? I heard something about them almost being wiped out?

I guess it should be noted that most of the numbers in the Forgeworld books are pre-Dropsite. At which point, the Raven Guard were the smallest floating around 80,000 while the Salamanders were closer to 90,000.

No, you heard correctly. The XVIII suffered massed attrition, due to their specialty of taking on the worst missions possible, and willingness to sacrifice their lives for these suicide missions. There was even questions on whether the Legion would extinguish itself in the Great Crusade within some circles of the Imperial Court.

The discovery of Vulkan changed their willing self-destructiveness with the promethian creed, altering their culture forever, and possibly saving the Legion from death.
