Hey guys I have a question on what's the best way to run termies? being a blood angels player I have to choose between assault termies or ranged so being able to mix and match is new to me. I'm planning on running more of a ranged army so was gonna give them some special weapons and didn't know if It's beneficial to run 1 or 2 with storm shields to soak up some bigger attacks or if it's not worth it? Also it says in there war gear they get a power weapon and storm bolter what's the generic weapon they get pf? Or is it any one?

Our terminator's basic weapon is a power weapon; You can choose Axe, maul, sword, or spear (don't do the fourth one, though). You can pay points to upgrade to a powerfist.

 

Role-wise, our terminators are still assault focused; 2+ saves are for assault, since you can usually get two troops for the price of one terminator and those troops have more ranged firepower. The main exception is our terminators' access to combi-weapons, which gives them an alpha strike potential when embarked in a pod.

 

I'd say... Maybe 4 combi-weapons* and any flavor of special weapon in a pod (we can take them as fast attack choices now, apparently, so they can still take drop pods, just not as dedicated transports). Give them 2-3 Melta bombs or a pair of power fists if you like.

 

* You will need to bits hunt or convert them.

The Terminators come standard with a Storm Bolter and Power Weapon, this can be a sword, axe, maul, whatever. However under the new codex the Power Weapon can be swapped for a Storm Shield for free. It was generally a good idea to have one or two models with a Storm Shield before, now it's even better and cheaper.

 

Essentially you can run your Terminators with any combination of weapons you want. My first Terminator Pack runs two terminators with pairs of Wolf Claws, two Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield armed termies, and one with an Assault Cannon and chainfist. My second Pack runs one with a Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield, one with a Power Axe and Storm Shield, one with a Storm Bolter and Power Sword, one with a Storm Bolter and Chainfist and one with a Heavy Flamer and Chainfist. 

 

As for what's best that generally depends on how you run your army and what you want the pack to do. TH and SS and a few pairs of WC make for a great assault unit, the entire squad can take combi-weapons which requires some conversions but can make them a devastating shooting unit, for a turn at least, and you can always mix and match as you want for a more versatile squad.

I've often run 5 combimelta tda guys with 3 swords and 2 Axes as an alpha strike pod and they tend to get the job done. Melt a transport and then either charge or be charged by the guys inside.

I always opted for the cheap Wolf Claw in the last codex along side a combi. And since this hasn't changed, it's what I am sticking with.

I think that just because you can pick and choose with wolves, does not mean it's necessary. If ou have a dedicated pack for close combat, then throwing guns in is kind of anti productive. Same for a dedicated shooty pack with a bunch of SS's. Ahh, but we are the jack of all trades and that is the beauty of running TDAWG. With the new dex dropping prices for TH/SS it might just be worth it to run one in the front to tank for your shooters.
