Anti-air after new codex

The stormfang's destructor has lance, but it's not twinlinked, and it's not on a turret. Plus you have to pay even more to swap the missiles for a TLLC. Then on top of that the stormwolf is an assault transport.

Any flyer zooming can decide at the start of the shooting fase if it'll be using the skyfire rule for all its guns.

Well, think about it this way. You only glance a storm raven on a 5. And you cannot achieve an Explodes! Result.

On the other hand, let's compare to a storm wolf. Each of the twin-linked multi meltas and twin-linked hellfire cannon (assuming ceramite plating AV12) glance on a 4, and on a 5+ penetrate at AP1 (explodes on a 5+). That's (at a VERY conservative approximiation) 50% more damaging than a flak missile. The TL lascannon glances on a 3, though it's AP2. Still, to say a lascannon hit is twice as damaging vs the AV12 flyer is an understatement. They're all twin-linked so that increases their output by a third. By my count, that makes the storm wolf at least ~8 times more damaging than a long fang with flakk - this approximation doesn't even take into account the AP1/2. So let's round it up to two full long fang flakk packs.

That's 430 points. The storm wolf is 235.

I basically never played since 5th Edition ended, so I wonder am I missing a rule I don't know about? Wouldn't the stormwolf's fire on other flyers only be snap shots compared to the skyfire quality of the flakk missiles?

Flyers have the option to choose skyfire or not each turn

The Helfrost destructor is a major aid versud armies like Guard (Multiple AV 14) , Marines (Multiple Land Raiders AV 14 and Predators AV 13) and Necrons Multiple pesky skimmers with AV 13 until penetrated.

Fliers can choose to use Skyfire or air-to-ground fire on any given turn, but all weapons must be in the same mode.

I wonder if folks would mind me using my old Land Raider as a counts-as Stormwolf....you know, maybe for a while until I get the hang of using it and decide I actually want to invest in another big centerpiece model for my army.

If you could stick that landraider on a fly stand make it stay in place and take a picture of it... HELL id let you bloody proxy it as a thunderhawk gunship!

The Helfrost destructor is a major aid

You and many others greatly overestimate that 'lance' rule.

You know what's better than an S8 lance against everything except a land raider with cermaite plating?

2 twinlinked multimeltas.

You know what's better against AV12 and down?

A twinlinked lascannon.

Which version of the flyer makes it less expensive to take all of the above as well as having a twinlinked helfrost gun that's superior against AV12 (and almost tied on AV13 due to twinlinked)?

The answer is storm wolf.

Interesting stuff here. I LOVE my longfangs, but even with skyfire (or maybe because of it) 2 packs get wiped out in short order against any flying MCs. Last time I played I got 2 single ML shots off before they were all dead. Not a good use over over 300 points !

It will be interesting to see how resistant these new fliers are against things like Flyrants.

With the upgraded stormwolf you'll have a good chance of killing most flying MCs with your alpha strike, just like the storm raven. The benefit is that none of your guns are one-shot so you keep being 100% effective until you go down.

It's not going to help you on turn one though, probably worth taking a rhino for those long fangs if they get killed off quickly. Depending on terrain you shouldn't have to keep them embarked either. Just use the hull to block LoS if the vehicle can get a cover save.
