Long Fang Squad

I'm running my two Long Fangs packs exactly the same as I have been for years.  They actually dropped 5 points each with the new codex.

Pack 1:  Long Fang Ancient, 1 Lascannon, 2 Plasma Cannon, 1 Missile Launcher, 1 Heavy Bolter

Pack 2:  Long Fang Ancient, 1 Lascannon, 2 Plasma Cannon, 2 Heavy Bolters

No sense in changing them  now.

Like Val, I will be keeping mine the same. 5 ML and 3 HB and 2 PC's. Just because the points went up does not mean the effectiveness changed.

Val's packs are prime for splitting fire having more than one single weapon per pack. For me, I'm just not about to build more LF's!! HAHA

May I ask why 1 HB in the first squad?

But with split fire being only 1 gun now, shouldn't the squads be more specialized or perhaps only having 1 different weapon from the rest? Ie 4 LC and a ML w/ flak?

I expect that the Lascannon will be the one to Split Fire with, or otherwise the Heavy Bolter.

The Heavy Bolters used to be cheaper in the last codex, so I included them to shoot at infantry for as long as they could, but otherwise to act as meat shields for the rest of the Long Fang pack with more important/more expensive weapons.  They'll continue to act in this way in the new edition, even if they aren't quite as cheap as before.

However, I could definitely see leaving another Long Fang un-upgraded, and using both him and the Ancient as meat-shields for the rest of the unit.

The Long Fangs packs I have had the most success with have been
:

Pack 1: Ancient. x3 Lascannon, x2 Missile Launcher

Pack 2: Ancient. x3 Heavy Bolter, x2 Plasma Cannon.

I like the second pack the most, although in my first 7th edition game yesterday the first pack put in some work against the Necrons. Anyone who tries to deep strike in and take out your Long Fangs who are chilling in the back are met with a world of hurt from the 9 HB shots and the 2 PC, even when charged I can get quite a few wounds in from the HBs.

Question - you mention 15pts for an extra wound. Is it no longer the case that every Long Fang MUST take a heavy weapon? Can you now have a couple of meat shields in the pack?

That's right - you don't have to upgrade all of the Long Fangs anymore.  Back in the last codex I would usually take a 'slick' Wolf Guard for an 18 point meat shield in order to preserve the Ancient and therefore preserve Fire Control.  However, now you can just keep a 'slick' Lone Fang for an even cheaper meat shield, and then sacrifice your Ancient for another wound, since you don't need him for Split Fire.

Keep in mind that plasma cannons and lascannons actually got cheaper, so a pack with 2 of them and 3 missile launchers didn't change much in price.

That's exactly right.  Like I mentioned above, both of my packs actually got 5 points cheaper.

Could you take a wolf guard with plasma cannon and look out sir. Get hot results onto the ancient?

Wolf Guard can't take Heavy Weapons.

This is the one thing that put a damper on the way I ran things. I currently and still will be running two packs 1.) 4 ML, 1 LC 2.) 4 HB, 1 PC. No real reason to change it around now. It is tougher to pop vehicles now and I have debated a full LC pack since 7th dropped though never been a huge priority when all my greyhunters are mobbing up midfield.
