Bloody Legionnaire
Vehicles are not bad against necrons, its just they require you to do proper armor saturation (which you really should be doing anyway) Theory hammer may say no, and again I'm not very experienced so it may just be a fluke, but AV13 front armor is still difficult to deal with.. no matter what army, and dual Str 10 large blast weapons are a pretty decent threat. I feel they work well in Pod lists because there's so much else going on that's in your opponents face that they are going to want to deal with. You can seldom ignore what's in your face and go after another target you feel you need to get rid of. Deep Striking a Lone Wolf or two with a SS and a TH to Assault and tarpit makes it even more difficult. I do completely agree it's all about saturation, though I don't think it has to be Armor. Two squads of troops in your face and thunder wolves rolling up the board towards you is plenty to distract from whatever armor is on the board Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294909-grey-hunter-squad-points-cost-in-new-codex/page/2/#findComment-3772695 Share on other sites
Lord Ragnarok
So I typically have my GH packs being lead by a WG in terminator armor. I'm wondering if a frost axe is a more viable option? To add it to a TDAWG is 5 pts vs 10 pts before. overall cost is one pt more with the same gear (WG, TDA, Frost Axe, Combi weapon) but the upgrade to frost axe is less to get to strength 6 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294909-grey-hunter-squad-points-cost-in-new-codex/page/2/#findComment-3772750 Share on other sites
Kasper_Hawser
@ Mr Bleak - your points are all very valid, and I agree for the most part. Nevertheless, I believe that it makes us really think about what troops to use, either blood claws or grey hunters whereas before it was a no brainer for grey hunter spam. And overall, our codex is very well supportive of each and every unit, not like some codexes which have several epic fail units like Mutilators or Pyrovores. No unit is redundant so to speak, so I'll take that as a sign our codex is well designed, if not so powerful like before. Even the power level between our new and old codex is debateable, with many different variables to argue. Like I said, overall I feel we're still balanced and powerful, with new toys to use, and old ones still viable. Will comment more later, will try to grab a game on Wednesday to see the effect. Pariah Mk.231
It's not that surprising that Grey Hunters got the Chaos Marine treatment, becoming more expensive to run as they were now that they've been updated. Both units were just too good to go unmolested. I know them feels bro Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294909-grey-hunter-squad-points-cost-in-new-codex/page/2/#findComment-3773213 Share on other sites
morry
so can grey hunters take boltgun and chainsword for 16pt now? cuz if so they are still bout same price but then its cheaper to have the wolf guard build into the pack and before? Squark
The pack leader isn't cheaper- You got an extra model, so you were only paying like 3 points extra for a 5th edition pack leader, while we now have to pay standard veteran sergeant prices. Of course, being purchased as pro of the unit is n advantage with regards to Drop Pods and Rhinos. So, to answer the basic question, Grey Hunters generally got more expensive. But most of that's just bringing wargear prices in line with everyone else. The close combat weapon option did get more expensive, but that's in line with what Chaos Space Marines pay for it. I personally think the price is too high, but hoping our codex would herald GW revising their prices on wargear was overly optimistic. Timber_Wolf_137
· Hidden by Valerian, November 16, 2015 - Necro with nothing new Hidden by Valerian, November 16, 2015 - Necro with nothing new What are you actually allowed in your squad of GH's? I've litterally just purchased my first SW since GW sold 13th company and I have no Idea what they are allowed to carry. Any help would be great (Y) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294909-grey-hunter-squad-points-cost-in-new-codex/page/2/#findComment-4224983

Any help would be great (Y) Hunters can take 2 specials, a power weapon/fist, a plasma pistol, and each take a ccw, a Wolf banner. You can add a PAWG or TDAWG Pack Leader that can take combi weapons, plasma pistols, Storm shield, any power or specialist weapon. Find a codex to look at as Hunters are quite customizable but can get expensive quickly. DanPesci
· Hidden by Valerian, November 16, 2015 - Necro Hidden by Valerian, November 16, 2015 - Necro So, to answer the basic question, Grey Hunters generally got more expensive. I personally think the price is too high, but hoping our codex would herald GW revising their prices on wargear was overly optimistic. Agree about the CCW, and really wish it was +1 point a model rather than +2, especially in light of the extra abilities most standard marines now get (combat squadding on top of their chosen chapter tactics etc). Although back when the codex dropped it didnt seem too bad at the time (an old grey hunter, with bp/ccw/bolter was 15 points in 5th ed, and had only gone up to 16 points to do that in 7th). However the updating of other wargear prices, and losing the squad banners was a huge nerf to the old GH setups (although id say it was probably needed to some extent as at the time GH were above and beyond the best SM troop in the game..if not the best troop). One thing to note, rather than buy CC weapons for my grey hunters, i nearly always go for just buying the company banner instead, especially in large games. To buy 2 10 man grey hunter units CC weapons is 6 melta bombs in points (and gets you one attack) Company banner is 5 melta bombs - and gives everything in proximity +1 attack. So if i can get two squads in near the banner, its making its points back...furthermore it grants +1 attack to all SW units, so if played right, can potentially boost the combat output of any unit in your army. Got a list im trying out on friday where the first round of pods come in, and then the pod with the banner hopefully comes in turn 2, jsut as several squads are hitting combat. Of course if you want a really killy combat unit of GH, give them CCW as well as the banner..but it gets pricey!
