New starter box - how do you glue your Wolves?

Hello everyone,

When I was a teenager reading White Dwarf over and over again, I had two iconic Space Marine Chapters I really liked: Blood Angels and Space Wolves. After playing the BA for several years I am taking the new Sanctus Reach: Stormclaw starterbox as the opportunity to start building my own SW army.

However, now that my Ork buddy dropped my SW half this afternoon I am wondering with what weapon loadouts I should glue them together? Former starterboxes just had snap on models, but now that you get full sprues with all customization options it's very exciting as well as hard for a SW newbie to make the right choices.

How to you put together your starterbox?

A common choice is to grab a Tactical box (cheap of eBay preferably) and combine the kits to get 10 Grey Hunters and 10 Blood Claws.

Duh, interesting thinking, thanks mate - especially since I still have unopened boxes with tactical Squads laying around. biggrin.png

I really liked modeling the arms that have the extended Bolter with a bolt pistol in the other hand... looks like he's double fisting bolter and bolt pistol.

You can still model some with bolter and CCW. Model the one with Plasma Guns as well, though the SW's arms for their plasma guns are terrible and it's hard to get them to sit in the right position without some green stuff or model putty.

I also model them all as Grey Hunters or Wolf Guard.. Blood Claws look to be viable in this edition, but I never think about using em.

Well I did a swap with a friend so got 2 lots of each unit, so 20 in power armour and 10 Terminators. As I'm doing 13th company, I then bought a box of Chaos Marines, a box of Chaos Terminators and a Chaos Terminator Lord.

The result: 30 Blood Claws (2 units of 15, each with 2 Flamers and 1 Power Fist), 15 Terminators (3 units of 5, each with 4 TH/SS and 1 AC/CF) and a Terminator Lord.

I also raided my bits box, so I've made Lucas as well.

Now I just need to paint them and get some Land Raiders / Stormwolves to transport them in.

Some additional research indeed suggests that Bloodclaws are an option - or should I make Skyclaws with surplus Jump Packs out of them?

Also, what special weapons do you put onto your squads these days? I played 40K through 5th and everyone and their mother needed Melta weapons back then, but is it Plasma these days?

nope 13th co is already on a 10.000 year killstreak through the eye of terror and need to replace some armor pieces (only after it has been blessed and pissed upon)

Rps

Well I may be, but my wolves aren't.

With the changes to the vehicle damage chart, melta is now more useful. You'll want a mixture of weapons to cover different scenarios.

I generally don't trust BS3 when it comes to melta / plasma so flamers on Claws are my go to there.

Well with 20 PA Space Wolves on sprue, I would definitely take one of those Tactical Squad boxes you mentioned you have and mix them in to give you 30 PA bodies. From there I'd do 15 Blood Claws incl 2 Flamers, and include (in that 15) a Wolf Guard Pack Leader with some sort of special combat weapon-ie a power fist, power sword, frost axe, whatever looks coolest to you. Then I'd do a 10 man squad of Grey Hunters loaded for Melta (so 10 guys with 2 melta gunners, and including a Pack Leader with a combi-melta) and it is up to your discretion to model some with CCW's (I personally would add some, but if you want to keep them cheap and field lots of bodies then don't bother). The final 5 guys I would make into 5 more Grey Hunters with 1 plasma gun. This to me seems like the best balance of troops from what you have.

When it comes to the Terminators, I would personally just make sure to get 2 heavy weapons in there, with at least 1 of them being a Heavy Flamer. I personally have done 5 snooty guys (so frost/power/blades/fists and storm bolters on 4 and then an AC guy) and 5 assaulty guys (1 with HF/PF, 2 with THSS, 2 WC/SS). But really, Wolf Guard are in the lore supposed to be the most individual, elite Marines in your force beside the HQ's, so really you can do whatever you think is coolest, and they'll still make for an effective assault squad.

I did the same as you - swapped / sold my orks and doubled up my Wolves to start a new force.

On top of that, I made a few choice ebay purchases and so have about 30 PA wolves and 15 termies.

I've modelled one set exactly as Fierce Eyes Finest so that, if I ever want to, I have the option of playing that formation.

With the rest, I'm going to make 10 Blood Claws and 10 Grey Hunters (with another 10 GH in the planning stage).

This way, I can take 15 blood claws if I ever want to abd have a good backbone to an army in the form of 2 GH squads in drop pods...all with CCWs and 1 squad sporting 2x melta / Powerfist and one squad with 2x plasma guns and melta bombs to cover armour and heavy infantry threats.

I promised myself this would just be a small army.....

EDITED FOR FAT THUMB MOBILE TYPOS

Well, my logic is this....I have pretty much all the minis (minus armour and transports) for the Dark Angels battle company, half the Deathwing, a bit of Ravenwing, 2800 points of Codex: Space Marines and 2200 points of Xenos filth.  A Knight Titan......

So 30-40 Wolves, 15 Termies, Krom and a few characters, 3 or 4 drop pods, a storm-something, some long fangs, TWC a load of wolves adn a couple of dreadnoughts IS a small army.

That's my logic and I'm sticking to it*

*unless the wife-to-be asks.....

I saw this and was like HUH? then I realized you meant the limited released Stormclaw and not the actual starter set.

You know, I honestly believed this is the new starter set until I just read this post on BoLS and realized it's a summer campaign. blink.png But with 40K just having a new edition it would have made sense, no? biggrin.png

Good luck. laugh.png The best thing to have is a wife who doesn't care and grow one's collection slowly, so in case she's once tempted to ask "are these new?" to reply with "but honey, I always had those." biggrin.png

I wonder if I can bring myself to glue these. I magnetize all my Black Templar Crusader Squads, but that's partially because they can have either bolter or CC configuration. Though I suppose in a sense that's now true of Grey Hunters too since they don't automatically get three weapons.

Oh who am I kidding, of course I'll end magnetizing every bloody plastic marine no matter the chapter ermm.gif
