The Legion for you... Community Assistance Thread

There's some cool ideas for XX Legion forces/cells in this thread, started by Iron Hands Fanatic. If you read it, you'll notice I mention an air-cav formation known as 'Erinyes'. That idea was inspired by Fireforce, which you can read more about here.

Cormac, that idea sounds perfect for the XXth. I can't imagine any other Legion doing that.

Hey guys, tell me if the following sounds like it wouldn't happen... but what are the chances of there being a Hours sided World Eater's Captain/Force Leader that instead of embracing his anger and succumbing to it, is more the type who sees their rage as a tool, a toll he can at least try to control, saving it up until he unleashes it on the battle field with all the fury of a Red Butcher. Sort of like... Atrocitus of the Red Lanterns, to go full nerdy. Not a raging beserker, but someone who feels rage, and uses it. Who is angry, but in control of his anger, able to use it with more control than most.

I don't see why not. It can be argued that, at least around the time of Betrayer, this applies to Khârn. Said captain could be a Terran veteran, who has mastered his rage over his years of service, or he could have malfunctioning Nails, that allow him a bit more control. Maybe he's actually a nascent psyker, who is unaware of his abilities, and they allow him to block the Nails more effectively? Anything's possible.

I can see the Terran veteran, who has been with the XIIth since around the time of terran unification. He's battle-scarred, and battle-weary. He is possessed of a fiery rage, but has learnt to control it over his decades centuries of service. He learns to be more circumspect with his emotions, and becomes a solid field commander, unhindered by rage. At some point after being reunited with Angron, the Captain agrees to be given the Nails, as he is getting old, and his body is worn. He sees them as a chance to regain the edge he once had. After a few early rampages, he manages to control (I use the term loosely) the Nails, and once again masters his rage. from that point, it's as you described.

To quote the cliche: "It's your fluff, feel free to do what you want with it". That said, it is certainly a valid, andi nteresting, idea; run with it.

I was thinking less malfunctioning nails or psyker as it is that he's simply been over enraged before. In fact, many expected him to go down the path of what would become a Red Butcher. Until one stopped him, the one who will be commanding my 1500 point force. The Red Chaplain, a Chaplain who specifically requested for his own suit of Terminator armor to be patterned like the Butchers so that in battle he can understand their rage and lead them in it. They both see Rage not as something to define them, but a powerful piece of equipment.

Essentially, although I was thinking of remarking that he survived the Heresy, but either became a Daemon Prince, or most of the time isn't out and about, to give me an excuse to field the Chaplain turned-Chaos Lord as the leader of my Chaos Space Marine Army with at least three Butchers. Or just in general.

Well, that and the idea that maybe the guy did succumb in the end.

Maybe your Chaplain-turned Lord wears a skull helm. Literally.....

Was the thought I had for him to do from the start

Talon of Horus has one such character.

Sounds great! AD-B has had characters with a similar vibe, and he's pretty much the one who made the nails a thang so I trust that. The main character in the short story Arnogaur (from the Sabbat Crusade anthology) explicitly harnesses the nails and this is 10k years later, or whatever in partial eye of terror time. Your character and army's stories are looking awesome and hopefully we'll see more of it :)

Hmmm... a little extra to it. While not something the Praetor Equivalent emphasizes, the Red Chaplain considers the best death in battle to be one of glory. Not honorable, per say, although if that's an option it should be considered, but a battle where it's two forces clashing. For example, if a Red Butcher fought a basic human in single combat, that would not be a glorious battle unless the human was particularly skilled. If he fought an Ork however, that would be more glorious.

Yes, I plan to do this for each major HQ I have planned. One of each. Commander, Red Chaplain (Possibly going on to be the Chaplain of Weeping Blood), Skull Chaplains and Skull Doctors (lesser Chaplains who lead the Despoiler Squads/Apothecaries, also known as the "Bones"), Forge Lord (the force fields more ranged weaponry than most World Eaters for a reason) and Primus Medicae (who explains why there are so many Apothecaries in the force.) The Master of Signal is usually coordinating the Areal Units like the fire Raptor, anyone determined enough to be a Moritat is usually made a Red Butcher, Champions are usually Butchers or Skull Chaplains, the Siege Breaker is usually the Forge Lord's role, a Vigilator's role is not seen as glorious and the last Librarian of the army stayed Loyalist and fought a glorious battle with the Red Chaplain when he did, his skull becoming the skull he used during the heresy.

... All that is mostly mad up on the spot. The last bit with who faced the Librarian is also up in the air, as either the Commander or the Red Chaplain could fill the role.

Alright, I'm coming back to the flock, but slightly different. My local club generally does not allow the Legion list, despite a few people now owning Heresy-era models and armies. They all use the Chaos codex, or regular space marine book. I already have a full-on Imperial Fist breacher army that is in various stages of assembly that is exclusively for the few Heresy games that get played.

I want to start up a new Legion army, using the Space Marine codex.

I've narrowed it down to 3 choices:

Very Knightly inspired Dark Angels.

Word Bearers, probably siegey/armoured.

Thousand Sons, specificaly the rumoured progenitors of the Blood Ravens.

The good news is that the Forge World Chapter tactics are allowed, which gives me plenty of choice for different tactics.

I'm not entirely sure which to choose, as:

-I love the few Word Bearers I've painted up, it's an awesome colour scheme.

-My recent research into medieval knightlyhood has really caught me up in the subject, and Space Knights are awesome.

-The weakest choice, the Thousand Sons still has some merit, as I've seen plenty of awesome Thousand Sons models online, including Flint's, and one in particular that I saw on Warseer with spirit djinn's modeled with the Marines looked amazing.

I. DON'T. KNOW. HELP!

Does anyone have any interesting spins on an alpha legion force left?

(Check p23 if you don't get what I'm on about)

All I have are the ones mentioned in the post at the top of this page. Although if anything else comes to mind (such as, say, a small XXth Legion force attached to a Solar Auxillia army), I shall post it here.

On another note, two (semi-related) ideas that have been floating in my mind recently:

1. 'Loyalist' Death Guard Dusk Raiders force, returning from campaign on galactic fringe. After returning to Imperial space, find out about Heresy. Brief in-fighting ensues. Loyalists (led by large Terran contingent) win, repaint armour in former XIV Legion colours ("One the red on our arm represented the Emperor's vengeance, now it represents our brothers' blood spilled by our own hands, and the blood of traitors that will be spilt by our own hands."), then make way for Terra, burninating any traitor forces they encounter on the way.

2. Rogue Night Lords force. These guys take the opportunity of the Heresy to go rogue, and basically become reavers, obsessed with the terror they bring, etc.

Addendum: Both forces would be accompanied by small force of Imperial Knights, part of the expedition fleet. The XIV one would be all Styrix & Acheron chassis, as these seem to suit that flavour. the VIII one would be mixed, but would also employ imagery from the House Aergagern (sp?), as well as flayed skin banners, gibbets, etc.

Word Bearers, probably siegey/armoured.

If you haven't read The Purge by Anthony Reynolds, then you need to. There's a XVII Legion Captain in that book you need to meet.

Barring actually getting a copy, PM me if there's anything you'd like to know.

I'm surprised your club doesn't allow legion lists, mine is just turn up and play whatever you like, so we have a few of us in an expanding circle playing 30k rather than 40k now. Obviously for tournaments they aren't allowed, but just for casual gaming its fine.

To business though. You sound like you want to do either the Word Bearers or the knights most, so I'd pick one of them. Maybe paint a test miniature for the DA and see which paint scheme you think you'll enjoy painting the most?

Yes, I finally dicided what to do and started to outline the fluff laugh.png

The 81th Rogue Trader Militant exploration/scouting/pathfinder flotilla.
From terra the flotilla sailed east through the galactic core and then north out in the Ghoul stars. After Isstvan V it is operating in the galactic north-east harrying and sabotaging the traitors behind their lines.

The forces consist of a small attached force of the VI legion, a Mechanicum detachment, a small household of Knights and the Solar Auxilia directly under the Rouge Trader.

The packs of the Rout focus around two elements. The first is a heavy strike force focusing on siege and boarding actions. They are heavy with terminator armour and breacher´s and are led by Sven Yggjung Blodnacke. The second is a hunter/scout force witch are experts of clandestine operation like infiltration, counter-infiltration, assassinations and sabotage (dancing with the Alpha Legion ph34r.png ) they are led by Inge Vakr Haraldson.
A large portion is still of terran origin and there are even some surviving unification war veterans. Due to infrequent resupplies there is a shortage of new equipment and the bulk is equipped with mark II and III armour. Only the hunter/scout force has more of mark IV suits.

The Astartes left the flotilla briefly for the Prospero campaign. After they returned to the 81th and got the news of the Heresy they took complete command of the flotilla and uses it as a harrying/guerrilla force.

Thankt everybody on this thread for all excelent inspiration.
