First outing with the new 'Dex, and some other ramblings

After quite a hiatus off these boards, I'm back.

Yesterday, I dusted off my Space Wolves, and drooled as I made a list for my first game with the Shiney new Codex.  (I'm still irritated at only being able to get the Long Fang edition, as the Wolfguard ones sold out too fast, but that is a different story)

Anyway, I was challenged by my son Chucky (no slouch of a player, he has been playing since he was ten, and is closing in on 22 now.  Wow, how time flies) and his Deathguard army, to an 1850 game, perfect as I am heading to the Nova Open soon and havent decided on an army.

He took roughly the following:

the Helbrute formation with 5 helbrutes operating as a squadron, all with Twin linked reapers, power fists and heavy flamers

Chaos Lord, with MoN, Burning Brand, Power Axe

2x 5 man Plague Marine squads with 2x plasma, champ had combi-pg, and PW mounted in a Rhino with Havoc

1x 5 man Plague Marine squad with 2x Melta, champ had combi-mg and Pw in a rhino with Havoc

1x 5 man Havoc squad with 4x Lascannon

Forge Fiend with Ecto-Plasma all around

Vindicator with siege shield

(I think that was everything)

I used the Wolves Unleashed Detatchment and took the following:

Harald Deathwolf (warlord)

3x ThunderWolf Cav, one with a Thunder Hammer, one with a Storm Shield

Wolfguard Battle Leader with a pair of Wolf Claws

9x BloodClaws, one upgraded to Wolfguard with a Powerfist, squad has a Power Axe, Plasma pistol, and Flamer

Rhino

Wolfguard Battle Leader in TDA with Power Sword and Combi Plasma and 2x Fenrisian Wolves

10x Greyhunters, 3x CCW, Power Sword, Plasma Pistol, 2x Plasma Guns, Wolf Standard, one upgraded to Wolfguard in TDA with Power Sword and Combi Plasma

Venerable Dreadnought with Assault Cannon and Heavy Flamer

6x Greyhunters, 4x CCW, Power sword, Melta gun, One upgraded to Wolfguard with a Plasma Pistol

Razorback with twin-linked lascannon

Wolfguard Battle leader with Thunder Hammer and Combi-Plasma

9x GreyHunters with 5x CCW, Meltagun, Power Sword, one upgraded to a Wolfguard with Combi-melta and a Power Sword

Rhino

I listed the various HQs with the units they accompanied during the game.

We played the Kill Points mission, with Vanguard Strike deployment, rolling off, night-fight was not in effect.

rolling for outflanking and rolling miserably (even with +2 on several units) I decided to deploy my entire army, especially since I had the first turn.

I split my army in two, My fire base had my Annihilator, small GreyHunter Pack with Razorback, the Large Foot slogging GreyHunter pack with Battle leader and the Venerable Dread.  This group was deployed center, with the 2 tanks a bit to thier left with open fields of fire for their Lascannons

My assault formation included the GreyHunters in Rhino with their battle leader, the BloodClaws in their Rhino with battle leader, Harald Deathwolf and his Thunder Wolf Cav bodyguard.

Chaos Lord Chucky deployed with his Havoc Squad perched high in a ruin, Poised his Helbrute squad to come after my firebase, and set the rest of his force up (3x rhino squads, the vindi, and forge fiend) to directly come after my assault element.

Attempting to but failing to seize initiative I had the first turn.

Seeing 5 Helbrutes poised to come after my center, I decided to back up my GreyHunters and Vendread.  They had been positioned right up on my deployment line for that mid-range firefight, but wanted to get some shooting time in before the inevitable charge from the Helbrutes.

I shifted left with Harald and the TWC behind a building, this served 2 purposes, one it put the TWC unit out of LOS from most of Chucky's army, and it gave the appearance that I was going to use them to support my center (which I was not)

and moved both Rhinos fast to my right, taking a position of cover and hoping to lure in the Deathguard squads.

I opened up fire with my Predator, and the 3 lascannons were enough, I blew up the vindicator before it could fire a shot, and scored myself first blood and a kill point to boot!

the razorback stripped a hullpoint from a helbrute, ending my shooting phase.

The Deathguard began their advance, just as I anticipated they rushed forward in their Rhinos, supported by the Forgefiend, on the other side the Helbrutes all surged forward

The Havoc squad fired all their lascannons on my Razorback wrecking the vehicle, but my Greyhunters passing their pinning check.  The Helbrutes that could see them opened fire, but they were saved by their power armor.

His Forgefiend opening fire on my BloodClaws Rhino, caused an explosion and killed a bloodclaw in the process, they to passed thier pinning check and were quite annoyed that their ride had been blown up...

In my 2nd turn, I decided it was time to strike.  My Greyhunters rhino moved forward 6" and the Pack disembarked right in front of the Rhino Rush was of Deathguard.  I repositioned Harald and his TWC to support them.  My bloodclaws were chomping at the bit to get to grips with the Forgefiend that had blown up thier ride, but the Wolfguard Battle leader saw the folly in this as there was just too much open ground to cross, and had the pack shift left to behind the now empty GreyHunter Rhino.

Having lured the Helbrutes close, the Foot Slogging GreyHunters with thier battle leader, the Venerable dread, and the annihilator all opened fire on the Helbrute squad.  The combined shooting of 9 plasma shots, an assault cannon, and 3x lascannon shots stripped a grand total of 2 hullpoints... uh-oh.

My GreyHunter pack in center popped the center Deathguard rhino, which conveniently enough housed his Warlord.

The Deathguard responded by disembarking the other 2 squads, my GreyHunters and their battle leader now faced 3 Deathguard squads.  The Forge Fiend advanced, in a position to either fire on the BloodClaws or GreyHunters depending on need, while the Helbrutes continued to shove themselved down my thoat.

The combined shooting of his 3 squads, (12 plasma shots, 3 melta shots, and an assortment of bolters, oh and the burning brand)totally obliterated the Greyhunters and thier Battleleader the havocs sqaud opened fire on my venerable dread and glanced it to death, and the Helbrutes charged the footslogging greyhunters that were in support of him.

Things were looking grim, I didn't have the tools to deal with the dreads in CC, the Helbrutes attacked with all thier fury causing 7 wounds, my Wolfguard battle leader in his terminator armor took the brunt of it, making an incredible 5 saves before falling, 2 other gryhunters met thier doom, and the Wolfguard packleader died in the challenge.  I failed my leadership, but was caught in combat, so this fiasco would continue.

One GreyHunter pack dead, the other tied in combat, my third small support pack decided to gain some distance away from the helbrutes, and advance hopping cover to cover in an effort to capture linebreaker.

Ensuring the Greyhunters pack did not die in vane, Harald and his TWC advanced and positioned themselves right in front of all 3 5 man Deathguard squads.  the driver of the empty rhino, seeing the BloodClaws rushing towards them scooted back and the Blood Claws with their Battle leader requisitioned themselves a new ride!

My Predator popped a rhino, but other than that the real action was to be close combat.  With a howl, Harald and the TWC made a disorderly charge against all 3 Deathguard squads, a gamble, but they needed to die!  His overwatch was ineffective, causing only one wound from a plasmagun, which Harald saved with his stormshield.  Winning combat, Harald managed to lock up the majority of his force in CC with the loss of none of their own.

The Greyhunters fighting the helbrutes did not fare as well, Krak grenades stripping a hull point, but losing several of their number, again trying to break from combat, but being held by the helbrutes.

Things are getting tense on both sides, kill points are racking up, the Havocs attempt to pop the Predator but only manage to shake it and strip a hull point, the forgefiend tries to pop the rhino out from under the bloodclaws again but only manages to glance it, the other two shots scattering wide.

Harald and his crew again win combat, this time one of the TWC go down, in the center the Helbrutes finish off the GreyHunters pack and consolidate toward my Predator, and the small GreyHunters pack that was trying so desperately to gain distance.

In my turn,  my rhino with bloodclaws rushed towards his lines, right in the face of the Forgefiend and closing in on the ruin with the Havocs that have been harrassing my force all game.  My small greyhunters pack continues to try and gain distance through a ruin and take a pot shot at a rhino with a meltagun, popping it for an easy kill point.  Harald and the TWC finish off the Deathguard (oh, through that combat I scored Slay the Warlord as well) and consolidate towards the Forgefiend.

In the Chaos turn the Helbrutes advanced and fired on my small GreyHunter pack, but fail to make the charge.  the Forge Fiend pops the Blood Claws rhino again!!! (now they are really pissed) but they pass their pinning check, the havocs now panicking at the bloodclaws getting so close open fire, and kill a few.

Its almost over, I charge the Forge Fiend with Harald and the remaining TWC, The bloodclaws adavance and fire into the ruin with thier pistols killing a couple.  While the predator shifts and strips another hull piont from the helbrutes.

The Forgefiend destroyed, the Havocs go for the easy kill point and kill the last remaining TWC, leaving only Harald Deathwolf (my warlord)

The Helbrutes open fire on the Predator this time, but the armor 13 is too much for the reapers,

at the end of the game, we tally up kill points and it is a tie, however I win due to scoring Firstblood, Slay the Warlord, and Line Breaker!  with him not having any of the bonus points.

A hard fought battle.

Thanks for reading! next ill post some thoughts on the new book, my list and what the hell to take to Nova...

Sounds like an awesome fight.  I have to admit though in moments such as this I ask my opponent if they want to end this now or play it out and see what happens.  Either way is great, but secretly I love it when they want to play out the carnage!

Was a great game!

And I love the new Codex, aside from a couple minor compaints its loads of fun and the gains way outweigh the losses in my opinion.

I love the detachment at the back of the book, and tried to take full advantage of the cheap Wolf Guard Battle leaders with troop choices for some outflanking goodness.  Didn't come in handy that game, but one game isn't enough to form an opinion.

As far as my list goes, I don't think its bad.  Not much in the way of anti-air, but I'm thinking of ways to take care of that.  Also, I realized power weapons are just not enough, I need more thunderhammers and fists scattered throughout.  Getting bogged down against those Chaos Dreads sucked, and I had no real way to deal with that in CC.

Also more Storm Shields, I love that large Slogging Pack, marching forward to midfield, supporting a VenDread.

Gonna tweak the list a bit for the Nova, not much time to paint anything new and I'm in the middle of working on a Storm Trooper army for Mechanicon in Oct.  Come November though, it's new Wolf Army time.

Just trying to decide if I should add to my already considerable Space Wolf army, or change up and paint a whole new force, I guess time will tell.

First on the to do list though, Is a Shield Brethren pack, and a Land Raider Crusader...

Thanks Rags, it was just my first outing, and I haven't played much of the new edition yet, so I'm kind of learning both the same time.

The call of Russ is strong, so much so I put the Storm Troopers army on the back burner to concentrate fully on Wolves, taking them to both the Nova and Mechanicon.

Wont have time to paint a whole new army by then, so I'll just be adding some units to my already considerably large Great Company.

A Storm Wolf is on the shopping list for today...

Hey littlbitz, good to see you active and thanks for the bat rep.  Coming back myself to take a look at the new codex. First thing that I notice is how comparatively cheap the WG bikers are to last edition. This of course made me think of our local biker expert and here you are..

I can start another thread on this topic, but want to make sure I get your thoughts. Thanks.

See you there.

Vrox.
