Thorgrimm
Can someone please explain these to me? I'm having trouble understanding how they work, can I take a data slate formation as my primary detachment outside of an unbound list? If so, can I take multiple data slate formations as my entire army? As an example, is it legal to take Cypher and the fallen angels alongside a Helbrute murder pack? Brother Casman
All formations, data slate or otherwise, are special types of detachments. So, multiple formations are allowed in an army, just like different detachments are allowed. Your primary detachment is dictated by which detachment (or formation) your warlord is in. Cypher and the Fallen Angels running alongside a Helbrute murder pack should be legal, yes. Kristoff
Keep in mind that some Detachments do not allow themselves to be Primary/have the Warlord in them. The Allied Detachment is the only one I know for sure at this time, but like the Allied Detachment, it must specifically call it out. So if it doesn't say it can't, you are good.
