Ulrik and multiple Long Fang Packs

Usually when I think of Wolf Priests, the first thing that comes to mind is buffing melee squads. With Ulrik's new 6" PE bubble, buffing shooting is another option.

One way I could see this working is the following:

-Ulrik the Slayer

-3 packs of Long Fangs, 2 with 5 Plasma Cannons and 1 with 5 Lascannons

-Aegis Defense Line with attached Quad Gun

Long Fangs and Ulrik all deploy behind the ADL, giving everyone a 4+ cover save (Ulrik would man the Quad Gun himself to provide some anti-flyer/skimmer defense, using his solid BS5). Ulrik would give the Pack he is with Fearless (so put in the squad nearest to an objective) and Monster Hunter (great for use against TMCs, Riptides, WraithKnights, etc.).... Probably best to put him with the Lascannon Long Fang pack, since that is where Monster Hunter is likely to be of the greatest use. Ulrik also gives his Pack FNP (6+), which isn't much, but still a slight boost to survivability.

Ulrik would also make all the nearby packs Stubborn and, most importantly, give all Packs within 6" (including his own) Preferred Enemy. For the Plasma Cannon Packs, this means they can re-roll scatter Dice, re-roll Gets Hots rolls, and re-roll 1s To Wound (which against anything T5 and below, means they get to re-roll ALL To Wounds). For the Lascannon Pack, they have slightly better accuracy against all targets and, against MCs, get to re-roll ALL To Wounds... since the Pack has Split Fire, Ulrik can shoot his Quad cannon at a flyer/skimmer and not waste any of the pack's firepower on that target.

This is basically like the SW version of Pask and a Squadron of multiple LR Eradicators, putting out 10 x S7 AP2 blasts and 5 x S9 AP2 shots a turn, all at 36" or more.

One way to enhance this battle group even more is to attach a Psyker (i.e. Rune Priest, allied Librarian, Inquisitor, etc.) with the Shrouding Power (from Telepathy discipline)... if he gets his power off, then basically all three Long Fang Packs + Ulrik + the Psyker get a 2+ cover save as long as they are behind the ADL, greatly increasing their survivability against enemy shooting.

Sounds kinda cool!! I may try it... I may not. I really don't like the 'hands on hips' sculpt they stuck Ulrik with. But hey, they gave me an amazing new Logan, so I can't complain too much!!

End of Line

We do not get telapathy or pyromancy. Codex Marines don't get divination (except for Tigrius), Dark Angels don't get Biomancy, and Blood Angels don't get Pyromancy.

Feels like you should probably make at least one of the plasma cannon squads into a missile team- A lot of people here are overreacting to the price increase- Codex Marines have been paying those prices for over a year, and they still work for them, after all. Since Ulrik is BS 5 (and has preferred Enemy), I'd also go with the Icarus Lascannon over the Quad gun.

Hrrm... Building off this with an Allied detachment...

HQ: Varro Tigrius -165 Points

Troops: 10 Scouts -120 points

-10 Sniper Rifles

Heavy Support: Thunderfire Cannon -100 points

That's 385 points there. If you deploy Ulrik with the scouts, they'll also get preferred enemy since it works as long as one model in the unit has it.

Current total is 1130 points; More than enough for a couple packs of Grey Hunters.

Alternatively, you could replace the ADL with a bunker with a couple of defense lines purchased for only a few more points.

Ulrik specifically buffs models with the Space Wolves Faction, so limited opportunities for Allies shenanigans.

I had not realised how amazing Preferred Enemy was with Plasma Cannons! I think it's because I've been playing since 2nd Ed and all the rules get blurred in my head sometimes. I had thought that Preferred Enemy was only re-rolls of 1 To Hit, I hadn't realised that it gave you the Re-Rolls to Wound and the protection against Gets Hot!

Might have to mix him in with a big unit of Wolf Guard Terminators with Combi Plasmas.

Yes, but he, and any Space Wolf Independent Character within 6" will get the rule, and they give it to the whole squad.
