marvmoogy
Hi guys I'm thinking of playing an assaulty / tank huntery squad of GHs - 2x melta, all CCWs in a pod.....a fairly popular build judging by the lists page. But, I have a question. Say I wanted to take a Wolf Priest, Lord, Rune Priest etc in with that squad. I'd need to drop the squad to 9 so that the IC could fit in the pod. OK so far. Now, could I still take 2 melta guns? The dex says "for every 5 models in the UNIT" so does a character who has linked up / started with a squad then become part of his unit? In other words, I'd like to take 9 x GH + the character and 2 melta guns. Is this legal? CHEERS! :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/295324-characters-drop-pods-and-special-weapons/ Share on other sites

Dantay VI
I think that the unit has to be 10 GH or 9GH+WGPL. So you would lose the second melta, but you could but a combi melta on the WGPL to mitigate this a wee bit. Pariah Mk.231
Any character joining the unit doesn't do so until deployment, after you've selected your army, so any options you take for your units do not include characters that join them. To fit a character in a drop pod with a grey hunter squad, the squad can only include 9 members, meaning you can't take a second special weapon. The pack leader counts as part of the unit as he is an upgrade, so he still counts towards the 10 member requirement to get your second special weapon. This isn't something that needs to be clarified in an FAQ, the independent character isn't selected as part of the unit. How am I sure of this? It was in the FAQ for the last codex in regards to attaching a wolf guard to the unit. You either take 9 hunters and attach a character and lose access to the second special weapon, or you take 10 hunters and get the full amount of special weapons but have no room in the pod for a character to join them. It's up to you which one you choose to go with. marvmoogy
Thanks for the replies and the clarification. Looks like a combi-melta or melta bombs is the way forward! unless.....whats the general consesus? 10 GHs & 2 specials or 9 GHs, 1 special and 1 character? Dantay VI
9 Hunters, with 2 melta's and CCW's 1 WGPL with combi weapon. His +1 leadership might make the difference between staying in the fight or running off the board in a fight. Frater Cornelius
Basically what Pariah said. Having said that, there are ways around. Get 8 GH with 1 melta + 1 Pack Leader with combi melta and give the Wolf Priest another combi melta. You will have 3 shots whenever it matters.
