New to the game and I have a few questions

So I convinced my wife to play Tyranids my roomate to play Tau and I'm playing Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard).

Looking through my codex it says my sargents are allowed to equip bolt guns and I've decided that's what I want however I don't have a bolt gun in the box for the unit and can't figure out where to get them. Can anybody help point me in the right direction?

I've also read through the rules and can't find anything hard on what an army should consist of in terms of units can anybody help me there as well please and thank you?

Bolt guns come in space marine sets; if you know anyone playing space marines you should be able to get some off them, as they’re bound to have spares — however, since you’ve had to convince people to also play 40K I doubt that’s really an option … You can get them from bits (bitz, whatever) sellers in that case, or you can do without for now smile.png

It really wasn't hard to convince them ;p

That aside will the arms really match iirc SM arms are quite a bit larger then the IG (are they called IG still or are they the AM? LOL) they are also encased in armor iirc.

Is there somewhere I can look at a conversion guide on how to make it look proper or something?

You would need to cut the gun away from the IG soldier leaving the hand intact, then the hand off the boltgun and glue it in place. I'll post a pic when I get home, my Armoured Fist Sgt. has one.

Cheers,

Jono

The Catachan command squad sprue includes a boltgun.

If you're going to convert, I'd recommend the Deathwatch conversion kit. The metal Hesh-pattern boltgun is a bit smaller and more compact than the plastics, which works better with Imperial Guard figures.

Just look at the parts and use common sense: you should quickly enough spot which parts you need to remove in order to make the weapon fit the arm. For example, if there’s a hand moulded to the bolter, cut it away in such a manner that the bolter remains intact — don’t try to cut really close to the bolter right away, but a millimetre or so away from it and then trim the rest of the hand away carefully so you have a bolter (without a pistol grip) left. Then do much the same with your Guardsman’s arm, but the other way around: leave the arm and hand intact by destroying the weapon that it holds.

Well I'd love to see it smile.png the more options I have the better choice I can make for myself eh smile.png

So I found my zip lock of Necromunda bits and dug till i found a bolter. Was going to take a pic for comparison but figured it didn't matter because I was wrong. Compared to the 5 other bolters on my desk from a Chaos Space Marine box the Orlock bolter was about the same size if not a just a hair bulkier.

So I guess Imperial gangers can get their hands on Astartes grade weaponry through the right channels.

I figure it's better to ask a dumb question than to screw up ;p

Most of it, like I said, is just using your brain a bit smile.png Oh, and use decent tools. You don’t need to spend lots of cash on tools, but at the very least get yourself a hobby knife with replaceable blades (and make sure you always have at least one spare blade for it left). I prefer ones of the X-Acto style:

These are made by plenty of manufacturers, but the blades are usually interchangeable between brands so there’s no need to go for one specific one — and if you find blades whose tip bends, for example, you’ll know not to buy that brand again in future smile.png (This used to happen with the only brand of blades that I could get in my area maybe 15 years ago, which is why I mention it as an example.) This also has the advantage that you can get differently-shaped blades, some of which are better suited at certain tasks than others, but the straight type pictured above — the No. 11 blade — is probably best for general-purpose work.

Pretty much every other tool you can buy is in the “nice to have” category (some more than others) rather than in “necessity”, but a good modelling knife is a must-have.

Oh yes I've been doing fantast for 15 years so I do have the tools ;p about 3 years ago I slipped and chopped my thumb in half and used the super glue I'd been using to super myself back to myself ;p

I just want to ensure I'm using the best possible model for the work. Many of the bolt guns are attached to the top of the arm and this would make them unusable. The free standing bolt guns are also harder to use as it would be hard to model my own hands around the gun. I'm also looking at models with arms I can just chop off or use the arm straight out though I'm finding that the arms holding them are the wrong size.

Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining I'm simply trying to figure out what option is easiest vs. the most natural look (my preference is for the natural look). As such I would like to know all my options and IF available a quick how to guide would be great though obviously not required.

Just remove that was well?

No need to do that. You cut of the pistol grip (which is easily doable with one slice of the knife), at which point you’ve got a bolter exactly like if you removed it from a Space Marine’s hand.
