A new Saga: Crusading in the snow

So yeah, i've fell for it. A friend of mine kept telling me i would have a Space Wolf army at some point, and i didn't want to believe it. Third space marine chapter? Nah, come on, i'd expand somewhere else first.......... and here we are.

This actually started a pair of years ago, in my foolishness i've bought a Grey Hunter pack believing i could use bits and pieces to enhance my Black Templars. Not going to happen. Too wolfy. So 've gone for a small allied "side" in the form of said hunters with a pod and a Rune Priest to round it.

Visual proof:

The dual chainsword guy used to be my wulfen marked boy, i guess he's been demoted to only very angry

Not too happy with the pod these days, i think is missing something, some color probably. I usually go for clean vehicles, but this is probably too clean.

The Priest on the other hand is not too shabby if i can say it myself

So this was the start, then Stormclaw hit the shops and it was over. Then the codex obviously, so now i'm working on a full force, or at least a basic 1750 points bunch of space vikings.

Refreshing experience posting as i go, i've joined the forum with armies basically done, and unloaded my full Black Templar force in one go.

So, what do you think so far? I'm by no means a prize worthy painter, but i'm pretty sure i'm doing justice to the models, at least at arm's lenght they look pretty good

So, there are these guys too, didn't feel like overkilling the first post.

I've gone for a very individual wargear choice, it helps i'm a beerhammer player, competitiveness (?) doesn't really interest me. Much better to go for fluffy and varied style, expecially if it means assault cannon and storm shield. Awesome.

I know, i did not drill the barrels. Is not something i usually do, but when i try is such a s****y job i regret it.

Aside from that, i've taken a few liberties with the painting. Can't really get behind yellow weapons or that light grey azure tint i see on the official site, went darker because feels more appropriate for badassery. Is not something new though, i clearly remember seeing this scheme somewhere in the past.

And pack markings, i've decided to go for a more claw-y style than the usual triangles (in part because this way is easier?). I hope no one feels offended by it. Fun to paint overall, the leader with cape and fur is almost as big as a dreadnought, i was impressed.

then there's Krom, pretty much done, but i think i can clean up some parts, and add some more colors and details. Is probably the hardest model i've dealt with so far, on par with Crowe

The bases so far are obviously undone, i didn't decide on the theme and opted for a snowy field in the end. It will arrive with the rest of the new pieces in a few days. Speaking of which, i'm unsure if adding simple rocks or go for ice formations, that i don't really know how to realize. Any suggestions?

Anyway, Blood Claws next. Always liked the concept, and after the new codex and Battle of the Fang i just can't avoid having at least a squad. More if i ever get around a way to convert a credible Ragnar.

Awesome looking Wolves man, don't worry, they still look grey enough to me. I especially like the smoking eyes of your rune priest.

Your Krom also looks very nice. But I still wonder why he gets a terminator base which does absolutely nothing other than making him fat in Base to base.

Thanks for the comments so far. Incinerator950, yours hurted a little, but i can see where it comes from.

About Krom, it is quite strange, i think i'll chalk it up to his fiery and ambitious nature. Wants all the honors, hogs all the melee. With an axe. That makes sense until rules get in the way, don't you hate when it happens?

Brothers, a question. I'm seeing a lot of purity seals around miniatures these days. I admit that aside a pair of books i'm not really a lore expert, but i was almost sure wolves weren't much about oaths of moment and similar stuff.

Thought was more something for more traditional, codex compliant chapters.

Can someone explain me how it really works? Not that i'll go about filing away seals from models, but i'd like to understand.

Reinforcements inbound!

Finally received my stuff, and is epic

Transport for the Wolf Claws, Bjorn and the woof wing.

Like Dante used to say: This is gonna be a hell of a party!

Update time, i've been working furiously these last days. Progress!

This was fun, i'm pretty happy about it, except the paw decals.... thought they were bigger but in the end is just a little drop on a sea of yellow. I must say GW made a lot of work for me this time, when the Stormraven came out was a hell of a kit, but barebones compared to the level of detail and chapter specific decorations on the Stormwolf. First try on snowy bases too, i'd say it turned out well.

Anyway, Bjorn joins my army too

Now this was a challenging model. So many details, so many parts. Awesome for sure, but taxing. On the plus side, making interchangeable weapons was incredibly easy, didn't even require magnets or engineering degrees.

Didn't have so much fun in a while, maybe because it was years since i've last built a full army.

Really nice work, nice clean colours. Just a point on the barrel drilling, I used to find myself damaging the barrels all the time until I saw a tip somewhere that suggested pressing in a pin first to make a guide hole dead centre and then drilling into this. I have found it to work a treat, was even able to drill the individual barrels on a DV DA assault cannon and cultists lasguns, practice this on a few spare bolters to see how it goes. Believe me drilled bolters can make a huge difference to a model. Hope this helps and welcome to the Fang.

Thanks for the tip mactire, i'll try and get it done at some point. I've never considered drilling barrels a necessity, but seems to be important all around.

Still painting, too much free time. So, some fur enters the fray

Just a start, i have a few more wolves waiting, but is something i'm really new at. Been a little too cocky at the beginning, i've learned the hard way i have to respect the wolf as much as i respect the battle brothers. Still not too sure about the dark one, i was thinking of having a white/black wolf as pack leader-alpha male, but there's something about black i don't seem to grasp. At a point that poor cub looked like a rat more than a wolf.

Edit: obviously the bases aren't finished, but i prefer to make them in batches, expecially because i'm still not too experienced with the quantities of snow/glue/water of the soup. I'd rather have enough bases to do.

  • 4 months later...

Yikes, it's been a while. I run really hot or really cold in the hobby, sometimes i paint for weeks until it burns me out and end up staying away for months.

However, as a end/new year's resolution i've decided to finish the army (which i've did, pics are pending...) and start actually playing. Which i've also did.

My first battle report! And game in about five years! Actually second, but let's not get bogged down in details.

What better than start bashing Thousand Sons? Not much, so that's what i've set out to do.

1750 points, Emperor's will, Dawn of War deployment

http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/zz219/stefanoferraris/Armies_zps2d54eeee.jpg

I've played Logan on Stormrider, Bjorn with helfrost cannon (reaaaaly wanted to try it), 10 Grey hunters with triple weapon, double meltagun, standard and hidden power sword in a drop pod, 10 bloodclaws with flamer, hidden power axe, WGPL with frost Sword joining a rune priest inside the stormwolf, 3 thunderwolves with storm shields and chainswords, 10 fenrisian wolves and a crazy TDAWG squad (one with lightning claws, one thunder hammer & storm shield, one storm bolter and power fist, assault cannon and storm shield, pack leader with storm bolter and frost sword. For the sagas).

My opponent had Ahriman, a Tzeentch daemon prince with wings, black mace and spell familiar, 5 terminators with 4 combi melta and 1 plasma, a ferrum infernum chaos dreadnought (played as Kadeth the Silent), 10 cultists, 9 power armoured Thousand Sons and two land raiders.

Deployment was fast, i've had the woofwing on the table, he castled a little around his objective, squads embarked, leaving just his terminators in reserve.

Turn 1 was straightforward for me, everything ran up the field, the Grey Hunters tried to destroy a Land Raider by dropping next to it. Managed a pen, but amounted to stunning it...

And he tore them to pieces in return. The daemon prince summoned some horrors (earning a perils wound in exchange), and then proceded to charge the poor wolves along with the dreadnought. First blood to him.

http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/zz219/stefanoferraris/SAM_3132_zps31d818f3.jpg

Turn 2 was about the same, i've kept running, my termies dropped next to the other raider, more as bait than anything, the Stormwolf decided it wasn't time. Bjorn shot the daemon  prince and wounded him. The fenrisian wolves climbed on the platform and made short work of pink horrors though, that was a plus.

And that's when the game turned upside down for the sons. Poor rolling from him and awesome saves on my side meant his whole psychic and shooting phases ended up with one hull point on stormrider. His terminators dropped in as well, shooting all the combis on mine for nothing, power armored sons disembarked and shot as well, doing nix. Ahriman shot lightnings like crazy, and buffed up with a lucky perils roll.

So emboldened by that charged on Logan, doing nothing and dying in return. I've almost felt bad. Meanwhile, the Daemon prince charged the wolves, hit his own face with the black mace, and ended up in pieces. Let's just not talk about the sons charging my TDAWGs. It was glorious.

http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/zz219/stefanoferraris/SAM_3139_zpsb4531df8.jpg

Turn 3 was me mopping up, the stormwolf graced me and shot on Kadeth, immobilizing him (it?), Bjorn did nothing, Logan charged on the termies, killing 4 of them. HoW hits are scary. I've been coward with the thunderwolves, afraid of fire for some reason, took the long road behind cover all the game,  so they were pretty useless. The fenrisian wolves ran towards his objective.

On his turn we just ended the ongoing melees, and Kadeth tied the wolves (in hindsight maybe he couldn't have charged, but we're very rusty) killing a pair in the process. I've then disengaged them, their weapons were useless.

On Turn 4 i've started to realize my mistake, and the thunderwolves tried to make it back to my objective, while the rest of my army did his best to destroy the land raiders. Bloodclaws and rune priest disembarked, a lightning finished off Kadeth, Bjorn took a hull point from a raider, Logan charged the other for no gain.

He parked both the raiders on the objective leaving no room, and shot Logan, wounding him.

Turn 5 still more of the same, Thunderwolves racing for home, stormwolf and Bjorn trying their best on a land raider that just didn't die, Logan and the termies charged on the other but doing nothing.

He deployed the cultist just to reinforce his hold on the objective, no luck for a sixth turn, i've lost.

http://i829.photobucket.com/albums/zz219/stefanoferraris/SAM_3140_zps5c4222de.jpg

Too bad i've lost track of the mission, could have been a easy win. And yet i'm glad, like in some books, wolves winning the day, but sons reaching the objective that was something else. It fits.

Fun edition this one, if a bit clunky at times, takes long for a full turn to unfold. Mad love for Santa claws, he's a bulldozer.

Edit: My friend made a short video report of the game, is in italian because we are, but might show a little more than these few pictures.
