MakoBoy's 11 day, 600 point Hobby Challenge

Hi All,

Come the 1st of September, I am joining a local 11 day Hobby Challenge. Come the 11th we will be starting a LFGS tournament of 600 points, probably with escalation.

So, here comes the advice, bearing Salamanders in mind. What is the most awesome way to get 30k into 600 points :D Hahaha

The task ahead is a hard one, do not fail me B&C community.

Well, in essense it is an attempt to revitalise a Gaming Club that has seen rapid decline in the last few months.

I am quite well founded in the local hobby meta, and i know that its due to things like, World Cup, Local Airshow Airbourne, And generally people have more to do during Summer.

So the 600 point games are a way of getting 3 groups of people back into it. People who play regularly but are finding playing the same people over and over again stale, people who used to play but now only come down to eat Lamb Shank and watch, and then the people who just flat out dont come anymore.

There are more plans in the pipeline for the future, but right now this is the best that we can hope for in terms of local events.

Its prett common knowledge round here that i am the local Heresy Fanboy, and really want to focus my Hobby energies on my Legion, and get the Choice nailed down.

(It has taken me 3 months to decide Salamander, and they have been firm in my mind for 3 weeks until someone earlier on, i swear to god, used Inception to make me doubt it)

So, NOW, i am looking for a way to start my Legion off right, with a decent little 600 point army that is fun, solid and most of all, useful in later games of bigger value.

In terms of rules, its just a case of bring a detachment. Very few people will try and cheese it at 600 points in my local meta.

And in terms of opponents there will be every single 40k army represented. Marines of all creeds. Imp Guard. Necrons. Tau. Eldar. Dark Eldar. Nids. Orcs. Inquiition. Maybe not Sisters, but not for lack of trying.

MakoBoy, have you got Extermination? It's got rules for ~500 pts games where each model is bought separately but can form ad hoc units. So you could have small groups of tacticals with a Pyroclast or Firedrake 'leader'. I'm hoping to give it a go against tyranids.

That... Is a quality idea.

Not really.  The Victory is Vengeance ruleset is supposed to be used by both sides in a game, not just one.  It's a campaign unto itself.  If you want to talk your group into playing a ViV campaign instead of the 600 point escalation league, then have at it, but the Victory is Vengeance ruleset isn't applicable to what you asked for help with.

Now, this is contrary to everything that I ever tell anyone for 30k list building, but because you are competing in a 40k environment and because of the buffs for this edition I think you might consider taking a Praetor, some veteran tacticals, and some Rhinos.

Praetor

-Pride of the Legion RoW

-Refractor Field, Thunder Hammer

2x 5 man vet squads, 1 meltagun each, 1 rhino each

Whirlwind Scorpius (could take a Predator with 40 points of upgrades or a Vindicator instead)

-List has very few bodies to throw around, it's basically the equivalent of 2 5 man grey hunter squads and a near-naked captain, with a tank and some rhinos.  That list would actually be about 100 points cheaper than this.

-HQ doesn't do much beyond make your vets troops

+With their built-in Ld half-reroll, you don't have to include vexillas.

+The Vets will let you pick a USR each game to help give you an edge.

+Rhinos will be additional OS scoring units in a Combined Arms detachment.

+Meltaguns to act as some all-around firepower for firing from top hatches.

+WW Scorpius will deal well with a lot of threats and do it from long range, solid firepower

Or something slightly more standard

Centurion

10 Tacticals

10 Tacticals

Sicaran Battle Tank

-Lascannon Sponsons

-Hull Heavy Flamer (do it, you're fast, salamanders, and nigh-immune to krak grenades!)

+75 points of wargear for the centurion/additional tacticals

+Sicaran is fast, mobile firepower, has high enough RoF to be anti-troop, main gun ignores jink saves so will counter skimmers well, good for stripping hull points and killing transports/light armor, high RoF + twin link makes for some okay anti-air in a pinch, will be a solid performer moving foreward

+Centurion with a consul upgrade can bring a lot to your force.  If you make him a primus medicae and then just spent the rest of the points on troops, you can have what amounts to a 15 man (including the Centurion) tactical squad with FNP to push up the field with, and a 10 man squad behind it.  Master of Signal's bombardment could deal an especially crippling alpha strike on turn 1 to your opponent.  Forge Lord could be a fluffy leader as well as help keep your Sicaran patched up through the fight.

+Plenty of power armored bodies

+With their built-in Ld half-reroll, you don't have to include vexillas.

-Lack of special weapons

-Lack of redundancy (if your opponent is transport heavy and your sicaran goes up on turn 1 to a lucky shot, you're hosed)
