disease
Hi guys, I'm trying to oil wash some heresy era death guard but I'm finding that that the wash eats through and lifts the underlying paint up exposing the bare plastic/resin. Here is my technique, what am I doing wrong? Cover models in diluted Vallejo gloss varnish mixed 1.1 with water applied by airbrush. 3-4 coats. Half fan hour to dry and cure. Apply wash made from a smidge of burnt umber diluted with normal household white spirit. Leave for 30mins. Remove excess with cotton bud moistened with white spirit. Get angry as paint is lifted in certain areas and whole model is stained sepia Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/295429-oil-wash-damaging-paint/ Share on other sites
Dude with a Brush
... with normal household white spirit. Your problem may be this. Try using products that were designed for miniatures, normal household white spirit may be too rough and burn too hot. I use AK-Interactive white spirit on my Death Guard and there has never been any problems, I dont even varnish my models before washing and it doesnt damage the paint. Also dont use too much force while removing excess. Lucien Eilam
Half an hour for the varnish to cure might be a little short. I find Vallejo products feel dry to the touch long before they're properly cured. I generally leave it overnight, but at least a couple of hours. If it dissolves, you'll end up with a wet, sticky mess that could lift paint on its own. I also use W&N distilled turpentine rather than white spirit, but it shouldn't make that much difference. You could be using too much. It does dissolve varnish, the trick relies on the varnish lasting long enough for it to dry. You also need to be quite careful and gentle when you're cleaning up the excess, or you can rub straight through the varnish.
