Where to start?

Recommended Posts

Good Evening Everyone,

I am looking to get into this amazing hobby, my goal is to be able to field a versatile army and not be stuck with one type of play style. That being said I'm really enjoying the Lore of the Dark Angels "chapter" of Space Marines and have always loved the Space Marines in general.

So what i'm here to ask of you all is where do you all collect your miniatures? I am aware that the Games Workshop site itself is pretty pricey for what you get and as far as I can tell all you get is Plastic Miniatures from them. Do you get them from Ebay? if so i've seen simple green is a good way of striping off the paint so that you can get the colors you want.

Things i'm not clear about:

- Named units, do they have to be the actual one from the box? or can you create a custom looking Belial from multiple kits for example?

- What is a good unit mark up to have a versatile Dark Angels in the box to make armies from?

To the above i was thinking something like this?:

HQ Units:

  • Azrael

  • Ezekiel

  • Azmodai

  • Belial

  • Sammael

  • Librarian in Terminator Armor

  • Company Master

  • Chaplin

  • TechMarine

Troops:

  • Terminator Squads (x3)
  • Command Squad
  • Tactical Space Marines (x3)
  • Assault Space Marines (x3)
  • Devastator Space Marines (x3)
  • Company Veteran Squad
  • Scout Squad

Mechanized:

  • Rhino
  • Razorback
  • Predator
  • Vindicator
  • Land Raider (x2)
  • Whirlwind
  • Venerable Dreadnought (x2)
  • Wing Bikers (x3)
  • Black Knights
  • Command Squad
  • Land Speeder (x2)
  • Darkshrouds
  • Jetfighter
  • Dark Talon

Misc:

  • 3 Drop Pods

So that's what i was thinking? now i know thats a huge amount of stuff so i'm probibly crazy.

Hail and welcome to B&C brother.

For getting your models, I would say Ebay can be a good place to get second hand models but it does lead to it's own drawbacks - the models are assembled how someone else wishes and not how you wish, you might pay over the odds for what is essentially junk, or you might end up paying in advance for minis that possibly won't arrive or will arrive damaged due to poor packaging. That said, you can get good deals provided you are careful and happy to use paint strippers like Simple Green, Fairy Power Spray or Dettol.

Now, I can answer your first question (the answer is yes you can make them from other parts, just so long as the model is WYSIWYG*) but the second question is better off being asked in the Dark Angel Subforum.

Thanks for your reply Olisredan :),

Its leaning slowly that I might just buy all my stuff vs buying on EBAY because I am quite picky about placement and customization options. It could be the more expensive route i'm sure considering the cost of the units, but i've heard people make tanks from WWII models and use their handy skills to make them into the equivalent looking.
