Alteran Praetors

Recommended Posts

Well I've had a lot of setbacks overtime for my different attempts at projects. I've tried, and settled on many different paint schemes and names overtime. Some of you may remember the Emperor's Legion or Legio Angellus I did a time back. Well I kept the black and purple paint scheme for this one. I decided upon the name "Alteran Praetors". Why? Well their home planet is Altera and they are the best they have to offer. I'm a big fan of the Roman Legions post Marian reforms. Hence the name. I decided on that style because I thought "Praetorians of what? Or what kind of Praetorians? Should I use Praetorian insinuating a simple soldier or a Praetor, stating that they also lead their people?" Hence came the name. They are the Praetors of their planet, the best it can offer and both the defenders and leaders of it. They teach the PDF and Astra Militarum regiments it raises (that will be a future catachan based project).

Alright strange rant over. I'm keeping to this project because I have my heart set on the foundation I've laid and my fiance has promised to kick me profusely if I don't. Alright so I'll break it down a bit. I shall post a painter pic of the scheme later on when I get home from drill Sunday. The basic Marine is all black with purple shoulder pads and helmet. They try at all times to wear helmets (I mean come on! One random or lucky auto pistol shot and pop! You're dead). A veteran is allowed a gold helmet, a captain a gold helmet and shoulder pads, the Commander (chapter master) wears the same as a captain but with a golden torso as well. Only the Sanguinary Guard and Lord Commander Dante himself may wear all gold. I may change the Sanguinary Guard paint scheme if I come up with something. All right, enough of the wall of text death, on to the minis!! And a bit of story.

Opening...

At the time Acting Captain Roland, later to retain the title as 3rd company Captain.

Details:

A strike team including himself and his Captain, then Captain Ejaln Stranus, was sent to help blunt a splinter Waagh! from the Ghazghkull Thraka's Waagh! during the Third War for Armageddon. The Strike force encountered stiff resistance and was blunted themselves, calling upon the rest of the company to assist. Due to their distance from the battlezone it took them days to arrive. When they arrived they found only Brother Roland standing. The rest were rent and sent to the Emperor. One was interred in a dreadnought, filling the sarcophagus left open by Honored Brother Styrgis' fall. When his Captain was cleaved from his own power armor by an Ork power klaw he picked up the raiments of office from the mangled corpse. Then Sergeant Roland became Captain and commanded his brothers until each of their deaths. Leading the way with Captain Stranus' battered and fading power sword, he felled many on his own. His bolter was said to have never quieted. Many pict recordings from fallen brothers' helmets show his withering fire as it literally began to shred the enemy. His helmet was torn off and rendered useless by a stray round. That's how his Brothers from the remainder of the Company found him. Shouting curses and prayers to the Emperor. His bolter fed by rounds from the fallen and never ceasing its own roar. The field of his blade flickered in places but never failed, continuing to shed ork blood.

Sorry about the bad writing, trying to work on it.

He is far from completed but that's where he's at so far. I'm going to finish his helmet and then start work on his cape.

That's all for now. Once I start work I can start buying more models. An army list will go up for this idea when I get back from drill. Sorry for the terrible quality of the pics, all done on a Galaxy S5. Supposedly it can take quality pictures, still trying to figure out how dry.png

Thanks brothers. C&C appreciated!

As dss7 said, a good start brother. Always been quite fond of the Black Reach captain model, converted one myself a while back but still trying to decide whether to make him a Sword Bearer or a Star Phantom. The power sword looks suitably battered to match his fluff (from that angle anyway).

Like the background and the colour scheme so far. I'm presuming they're a Blood Angel successor? How are you going to portray the Death Company (if they have one?)?

Alright a bit of progress, got a bit busy once again. Had to move painting stations (new apartment, layout is still in flux). Not much work done, also have to start on my WHF and Warmachine projects. Too many friends want to play games wacko.png

So the new kitten got a hold of my captain. Left every other miniature and all the paint and brushes alone. But decided to bring Captain Roland into the bathroom and eat part of his sword. I feel the sword now has a bit more character for the fluff so it's not a loss just a frustration.

I got the purple started on a few of the Tacticals. Two of them have to go for stripping. The basecoat came out cracked on one and foamy on the other. I think I need a new can of basecoat. It is quite old. The last one is still only on the base color purple. The rest are ready for the three stage highlight process.

Good work brother thumbsup.gif I'd definitely work the broken sword into the Captain's fluff. Perhaps even include it as one of his titles, eg: 'Roland, Captain of the 3rd Company, Keeper of the Sundered Blade'.

I really like the pose of the pointing marine holding his boltgun up in the air. The marine reloading his bolt pistol is pretty cool too, but his arms/shoulder pads are possibly a bit low on the torso (might just be the angle of the pic though).

@DSS: its an old can of P3 black primer. Normally excellent paint I think this ine is a little too old. I got it from my fiance's brother who's been out of the hobby for a few years

@Asamofai: Will do.

@Spacedhulk: Not a bad idea. I'll work on it a bit. As for the bolt pistol marine, I think you're right. I'll look into it.

This is part place holder for an update tomorrow (going to get some painting done I swear) and part a question. So I've been reading a lot into the Imperial Fists and recently even using their rules in my games. I've found they're fluff to call to me a bit more. Especially seeing as I got into 40k on the BA's and I'm quite a different person since those 6 years ago. I wanted to ask you guys what you thought of making the Alteran Praetors an Imperial Fists successor. I just love the Chapter rules they have, they're fluff and mindset appeals to me much more these years. Also I saw the Sentinels of Terra sub 'dex and looked into it. I lie how it feels but wanted to know if any of you knew how it plays and reads? Thanks brothers!

whistlingW.gif Got some work done on Captain Roland today. Took me all fething afternoon and little to show for it. Got his face painted, took me nigh on 4 hours but its the second face I've painted and I'm actually rather proud of this one. I detest unhelmeted minis but this one is growing on me. I also got his cape and tabard(?) done. So much touching up to do before I can move on to his bolter.....

Looking good brother! thumbsup.gif The red cloak/robe really compliments the armour colours.

As for changing the Chapter to an Imperial Fist successor, I say go for it! If you prefer the IF background to the BA then why not? One of the benefits of creating your own chapter is that you can develop them however you like. You're still at quite an early stage with the army so it's not going to create any problems if you do change the fluff.

So the kittens little thing has turned out well for Captain Roland. I think I shall make it an IF successor. There is a lot of fun to be had with rerolling bolters and the different codex options I can toy with.

Thank you brothers, and now some progress. I managed to get this guy completely done except for his bolter. I popped it off and am now trying to find a stick to glue it to so i can paint it properly.

My quick thing is I need to work on my squiggles for purity seals. I'll have to figure out something.

C&C appreciated brothers!

Excellent work in here mate. For squiggly bits on purity, I personally use a really dark brown instead of black. Black can look a bit ott. I used a painted bit of sprue to practice squiggles (love that word) on and eventually you'll get your eye in. Have the sprue ready when you're painting something else and practice when waiting for something to dry.

As for the old primer, have you tried running the lower half under hot water? It should loosen any pigment form the bottom of the can and the heat will help build some pressure inside. This should result in a smoother coat. Also check the nozzle is clear and spray in short quick bursts, there are a few videos on youtube showing the optimum technique for spray painting with a can. And again,  a spare bit of sprue is a willing victim.

I'm loving the background you're putting into these guys and am looking forward to seeing a veteran, a gold helmet with that purple your rocking will look great.

So I picked up some new spray paint. The GW chaos black. A couple of guys at my hobby shop recommended it. I also managed to pick up one of the web exclusive Space Marine Captains that came out I believe when the codex released. Its the one with the power fist, storm bolter, and power sword in skull covered sheath. He has a bit more skulls then I'd like but he's pretty cool. I throw up a pic of him tomorrow if I can find a helmet....

Finally got around to getting some painting done. Only a little bit, my hands are having a hard time with holding the tiny paintbrush for too long. Gotta get back in the swing of it.

I got his purple up to the final coat and I'm currently working on the highlights for it. After thats done I shall move on tot he silver bits and his eyes. I'm experimenting with my phones camera and lighting to get good pictures. The highlights done stand out that much in real life.

Also reinforcements!!!

My buddy found an old ironclad dreadnought in his basement. Just have to try and scrounge up a base for it from somewhere. Any ideas where I can look? I picked up the exclusive captain because...well he's cool, my lgs only had and ever received one, and I figured I would never see it on the shelves anywhere else. Sooo.... he shall eventually be a Pedro counts as for one of my companies. The three little snap fit guys are just for some bulking out until I can afford the full tac squad and when I figure out a list for them. Still a process of figuring out what works for me.

Quick tactics question. I have had very minimal luck with assault marines. They just don't do their job very well because they're just a little too fragile and they don't have any big buffs for them to hit hard. I've only had luck running a full strength one with two plasma pistols. Am I doing something wrong with them? Is there something I should add? I've also been debating about replacing them with bikers. Since the IF rules love botlers so much why not have a strong mobile bolter unit? They get insane rerolls on their twin linked bolters, an excellent mobile fire base, and they pack a nice punch in melee in a pinch. Thoughts?

C&C please! Thanks brothers.

Never mind brother, my painting has ground to a halt at the moment as well. dry.png

In response to your previous post (sorry I missed it first time round btw) you could probably get a 60mm base for the Dread on ebay. Alternatively, if you don't mind paying a little more, there are quite a few companies that make scenic bases that size, for example: http://www.anvilindustry.co.uk/Anvil-Gaming-Bases/City-Rubble/City-Rubble-60mm-Straight-Base

I picked up the Exclusive Captain model for exactly the same reason! Mine's had a head swap and is also going to be a counts as Pedro (for my Executioners).

As for assault marines, they're actually pretty poor in assaults. Best targets for them are weak troops choices like IG or Tau Fire Warriors, but they'll definately struggle against other Marines and more elite enemies. Basically they're like a more mobile Tac squad, less range & firepower but faster and slightly better in close combat. They are pretty cheap though, so perhaps you could use them to accompany more powerful units (like Vanguard or Honour Guard), adding numbers to critical combats while the other unit dishes out the damage.

Bikes are always a good choice, but I don't think they'll really benefit from the Imperial Fist chapter tactics, as their bolters are already twin linked and you can't re-roll a re-roll.

Thanks brothers! And shoot forgot about that. I never do it in game but I always forget about rerolling a reroll.

@Dss: Thanks! It's easily my favorite color to paint (funny, I used to hate purple). And now that I've figured out thinning and my highlight mixture (no pics but I got it down) its going to look even better.

Now I need some help please. I've been working on the fluff and background on these guys. I have a lot of it down but I'm struggling with the symbol. I came up with a bullet on a shield (terrible I know) because of their prizing marksmanship. My better half came up with a crossed sword and quill, because of their role as warriors as well as leaders/teachers. What are your guys' thoughts?
