EC and challenges

So just imagine a EC sergeant with his squad in CC. He must issue and accept challenges. So he will face similar dude with AA, power axe or powerfist. How should I kit my sarge to win challenge, because losing it will be the last thing this squad do on board?

Phoenix spear get that great profile if I charge, but if I issue challenge is it charge or not?

I'm thinking about a small detachment of those guys so c and c welcome.

Imperial Fists have the same problem where we HAVE to challenge. Luckily for us we get to re-roll failed to-hit rolls.

As for gearing them up, if you Attach a consul to the squad (as your obligatory HQ) give him a charnal saber as extra for +1 Initiative.

Beyond that, I think the spear gets the charge profile in a challenge for the first round of combat only (proceeding a successful charge). After that it reverts. So it might be worthwhile to take, though I'm by no means an expert on EC.

Phoenix spears would be the way forward. You get +1 initiative already in challenges for being Emperors's Children (see amendment to Leguon rules in the Istvaan Campaign Rulebook - several of the earlier Legions got a few updates. Palatine Blades can now be upto 10 man squads, woo hoo).

So on the charge you're attacking at strength 5, ap2 an at initiative 5 for a Sergeant in a challenge. So not bad then :)

Darn it, I've been back and forth between my what will be my second legion and now I've got EC added into the mix. That's now 4 to decide between then lol....joking aside, that +1 initiative in challenges really does help. Make sure you get the charge though, Artificer Armour in most sergeants is a given so striking with ap2 at a higher initiative will guarantee you killing the opposing sergeant if he accepts, plus you may hopefully carry some wounds over onto the squad :)
