Sons of Horus Log - the Captain Comes

Greetings Brothers and Sisters.

So I've finally started to work on the paint scheme for my Sons of Horus army, and I was hoping for some input from everyone.

Here's my test model in the potential colour scheme. It's obviously not completely done, just basic colours and some highlights. Sorry about the lighting in the images, I've only got a single lamp and I've never taken pics of models before.

What I'm looking for in particular is suggestions on the way I should highlight it, detailing, weathering, and of course taking better quality pictures without having to go out and buy a whole bunch of things.

Great start Ion! The sea green armour is really nice. As you say it's not finished, but a darker shade/wash on the armour would be great to add some more depth.

Looking forward to seeing some more :)

Hello,

That's a really fine start! I think the SoH have a lot of potential for looking great on the tabletop.

As suggestions for highlights and weathering, I would take the SoH helmet I painted as decoration for one of my Night Lords Cataphractii terminators as an example:

(It's a small pic, sorry. It's the helmet not glued to any base)

I actually mixed the base color with progresively lighter silver colors plus a drop of bone color for highlights. For weathering, I painted some Typhus Corrosion and Vallejo Hull red both in the recesses and sponged over it. I am glad on how it came out and would use that technique if I had to paint an army of them.

I hope it helps. Keep up the good work!

Mixing a metallic paint into it to highlight? Or did you mean as part of the weathering process?

Sorry I didn't answer before. I have spent the weekend without Internet access.

I actually mixed the metallic paints with the base color (Gunship Green from Vallejo Model Color) for the highlights, using progressively lighter metallics for each of the 3 highlight stages. After that, came a thinned down green glaze and the weathering with Typhus Corrosion and Vallejo Hull Red. I was aiming for a look as seen in the HH books.

I hope this helps! I am looking forward seeing more of your work.

I'll definitely keep that in mind, I think I'll stay away from the metallic look however, as I don't think I can pull it off that well.

Some more pictures now that I've got an acceptable highlight colour for the main green. My job means I'm often too tired to paint, so it's slow going.

And also my Terminator Praetor, who is waiting on some new greenstuff before I finish him because the stuff I have is too old and hard to work with.
