Shoulder pad markings

Are "the wolf that stalks between stars" and "the badge of the night runner" interchangeable as great company markings for the champions of fenris since grimmer is both wolf lord of the COF and great wolf?

Just wondering for when I start my shoulder pad markings.

Cheers

They are. Though generally according to the CoF fluff usually only those battle-brothers who have served the company since before Logan was the Great Wolf still wear the Night Runner symbol, as a badge of their length of service. However that's just a suggestion and there's no reason you can't use either interchangeably.

And, after 500 years, there are probably only a few of those left (some Long Fangs and a few Wolf Guard, perhaps).

Also you don't have to have grimnars great company set in the currant timeline. I'm having my great company from around the first war on armiggedon, with grimnar having a big bushy ginger beard

.

This is a very good point. Got any pics of your army?

I have a related question. How do you guys do your wolf that stalks the stars white on black, my free hand is rubbish and the transfer is black. Any thoughts?

Forgeworld has white transfers. The 5th edition codex also mentioned that sometimes company markings are pallet swapped to the colors of the pack markings, so Grey Hunters would have a black WTSTS on a red background, Wolf Guard would have black on yellow, Long Fangs black on white, and blood claws red on yellow, so that covers everyone but the newbies.

It's not as hard to freehand markings as it may seem. The most important thing is to come up with a system. I tried freehanding Raven Guard and Blood Ravens chapter symbols badly for ages before I sat down and worked out a proper method. One easy tactic is to paint a rough outline. So for the Wolf That Stalks Between Stars symbol you'd take white and paint onto the black shoulder pad. Take the total outline of the wolf, from head to paws and tail and paint that profile as a single sort of oval. Then take black and "cut" into the white shape with the black to create the spaces between the neck, legs and tail. This way by starting with the overall shape you help to ensure an even and consistent shape and size and if you mess up with the black you can just touch-up with white or black as needed and since your not actually trying to draw anything it's a lot easier for many people to do.

So for instance with the Raven Guard marking when I tried to "draw" the symbol white on black it always came out terrible, lopsided, mishapen and just... bad. But creating the rough bird outline in a big white blob that I could size and proportion on the pad without worrying about the details and then "cut" the details into that shape with black it improved the freehanded image 1000%, the difference was incredible.

Also when you freehand instead of using transfers you don't have to worry about cutting the transfer to fit properly on curved surfaces, applying a mat finish or fixative or worry about chipping and flaking. Plus you can do the symbol reversed if you want to and aren't restricted by the orientation or size of the transfers.
