skeletoro
Hey, just wondering if there is any consensus on what 'any type' means when referring to a land raider in a formation. Does it still restrict us to the ones in the SW codex or does it contain all the variants that space wolves have available from other sources - in particular, Achilles, Helios, Prometheus and Proteus in Imperial Armour II (2nd edition). Just wondering because I have a land raider Proteus and would be tempted to put some combi-weapon models in one or two (using the kingsguard stormforce), using scout and preferred enemy/monster/tank hunters to alpha strike something. Not super powerful or anything but could be a fun little combo (and the bonus to reserves is nice if I am not already getting it from elsewhere) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/295670-land-raider-any-type-in-formations-any-type/ Share on other sites
Pariah Mk.231
It needs to have the Space Wolves 'faction', which the ones you listed don't currently have, so they couldn't be included as part of a Space Wolves formation. The only land raiders available for use in the formations are those found in the Space Wolves codex, as those are the only ones currently sporting the correct faction. skeletoro
It's hard to avoid the conclusion that 'is a heavy support choice for a codex: space wolves army' doesn't entail faction membership. Granted, it would be more RAW watertight if forge world updated their rules for 7th ed but yeah. Why do you say the units must have the space wolves faction? The CAD detachment says units must have the same faction (or no faction) where does it state that 'no faction' is disallowed for formations? It says they must be taken as a dedicated transport. As WGTs can only take the 3 variants of LRs as dedicated transports, it might be argued that they cannot take a Proteus as a dedicated transport so it cannot be taken in this formation. I'm not sure where I stand on this; it could be argued that the formation is not bound by that restriction as it says (any type), thus permitting its use as a dedicated transport. Pariah Mk.231
You appear to be right, it seems there isn't actually a requirement for all models in the same formation to have the same faction, only models in the same detachment (that we've seen thus far). As formations are taken apart from normal detachments, and don't explicitly say they must include only models with the same faction, I guess you could indeed include any type of land raider in any formation that doesn't state a specific type or that it must be a dedicated transport. Since most formations dictate which models you'll be taking(and they'll usually be from the same faction anyway), I guess GW didn't consider the need to clarify the relationship between formations and factions.
