muggs
I was just looking through the codex and realised that you could make a fairly effective assault squad from the Long Fangs. 6 man squad, 1 wolf guard, one ancient (can take PF and special weapon) and 4 ablative marines. The rules just say one Long Fang can be upgraded to WG not specifically the ancient. Ancient has 2 attacks as well. Sound useful? Frater Cornelius
Not very much because they are too slow to get anywhere before being shot down. They hit most targets on 4s anyway and they can not get the +1WS from CoF Detachment. If you want to assault, stick to either Bloodclaws (which are cheaper and get more attacks) if you are a CAD or WUD player and WG (which are WS5 and have way more attacks than even Bloodclaws) if you are a CoF player. Not speaking about dedicated assault units like TWC though. Urauloth
But why would you want to? Surely your long fangs are much more useful as fire support, and I don't really see why you'd want to blow a heavy support slot on a 6-strong unit of what amount to grey hunters with an extra pack leader and no ccw option. muggs
they come with BP and CCW, so they do have the extra attack. you wouldnt necessarily lose the slot as you can still take a stormwolf It was just an observation really Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/295712-long-fangs-as-assault/#findComment-3787821 Share on other sites
Urauloth
Hmm. You're right, you could take the dedicated stormwolf and kit it out with meltas. What I meant about ccws is that you can't take the boltgun/bp/ccw loadout, but I guess you only need the sword and pistol for a dedicated assault squad. Still seems underwhelming, though, compared to grey hunters or blood claws in that same stormwolf, particularly in a CAD where they'd have objective secured. Freman Bloodglaive
I'd do it for the lulz. Imagine the old timers getting outraged at the whippersnappers not pulling their weight, tossing aside their heavy weapons and diving into the fray to "show them how it's done". Haakon_Stormbrow
didn't long fangs use to be able to take special weapons? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/295712-long-fangs-as-assault/#findComment-3788433 Share on other sites
Kasper_Hawser
Only the Pack Leader aka Ancient could take special weapons. The rest had to take heavy weapons. New codex actually doesn't force the Long Fangs to replace his weapons with heavy.
