My army is the 216th maniple of the III legion under praetor Maldonado, Numbers at about 1000 astartes at the last census.

 

The maniple is the core of the 648th expeditions fleet that also contains a maniple of titans, a knight household and various regiments of imperial armour. As well as the support into naval vessels.

 

The maniple believes in the old foundings of huge legion and would only recruit from the nobles of worlds brought into compliance. However supply of suitable candidates soon out stripped demand and they were forced into recruiting from lesser classes. However these marines would rarely be promoted above the rank of line sergeant.

 

They also believe in the art of being an officer and a gentleman, as such officers are expected to use sabres and other sword based weapons. The use of other weapons is heavily critiqued by the upper echelons of the maniple and sanctions are put into place against those who ignore the rule. With only siege breaker Gauermann able to defy it, wielding a siege hammer, but only in conflict. During briefings and aboard ships he still had to carry his power sabre.

 

The 216th have a unique take in destroyer squads, they are part of the probatus section. Line marines are sent to serve in this section if they have failed to observe prober military procedures as set out by the praetor. Whilst a member of the probatus squads legionnaires are not permitted to wear the palatine Aquila. Command of the probatus was considered a punishment to most officers who were given the task by the praetor, and they would work to get reassigned. However heir current commanding officer has taken to his charges. Under his command the probatus have been turned form a dysfunctional group of sacrificial astartes into a deadly fighting force that he proudly calls his ugly bastards.

 

They were operating far form the main legion when the heresy started. Little is known of their outcome, except that there was internal conflict between those who embraced the liberation and freedom that Horus represented and the old beliefs that held sway under the emperor, of hard work and every marine knowing his place.
