First paint attempt after being with the Aett since 5th

Fire Wolf

Recommended Posts

Good evening brothers.  I've been playing since the release of the 5th Edition Space Wolves and only now have I finally gotten the courage to paint and I'm just looking for some feedback to see what you guys think.

Just to note:  I am not happy with his frost weapon.  At all.  I need to pickup some darker blues and maybe a white and work on a blending technique that I'm not familiar with and come back to him.

So, I present you the Wolf Guard of the 1st Grey Hunter pack:

I'd say it's a pretty good model overall. The posing is amazing. As for the paint job, couple things I'd recommend. At least for me I've had a nice look for frost swords by starting with a dark blue base, and then slowly drybrushing towards the top of the blade with a light blue, and then white. The wolf pelt looks quite good and I can't see any real improvement I'd do there, but for the armour I'd suggest some edge highlights with a light grey, it'll make it stand out a bit more. Overall great job though man, keep it up.

I appreciate the kind words, Reede.  I really appreciate the ideas about the frostblade as it was my biggest downfall on this model.  I'll definitely pick up a few more paint pots this week and do as you advised, starting with a few test subjects in the bits box.  Thank you!

I agree. The more you do it the more you realize that it isn't all that complicated to add a bit of highlighting here or there that really makes the model pop. Especially power weapons with either a bit of glow or some kind of bluish design I often find with really do a lot of good toward making the model look nice.

Well, it's a bit to do with the conversion process of bashing the Chaos Warrior sprue with the Grey Hunters.  There's a very limited feasible way to add a shoulderpad to the model after you do the conversion, so you just have to make up the excuse that the shoulderpad is hidden beneath the pelt!

Edit:  I also appreciate the kind words, thank you!

An Update as requested by some of you in the Assassins thread:

Vindicar Counts-as:

Hroarr, The Spear of Fenris

Notable Actions:

Story to come. . .

Edit:  Yes I know the 1k Sons head isn't done at all.  I'm getting a friend of mine who plays the army to paint it up for me after he lost our last battle, haha!

Good stuff! Welcome back. I'm kinda in the same boat. Just back after 13 years... What color are you using for the armor? I like it. Dark and grim ;-) I wanted something more that shade but started using the Fang so I could spray base coat and it's a bit light for my liking, but alas! What's done is done.

The new frost blade looks good. I especially like the frost effects on the impaled helm. Nice touch.

Hey Fire Wolf great work on the paint but maybe get a background so the camera focuses on the miniature more then the background. It will improve the quality of pictures you take of your miniatures. So something as simple as a black cloth would do. Maybe use two desk lamps with same type of light bulbs for better illumination on each side. Overall looks nice but one question why White armor on the vindicar count-as?

The armor on the Grey Hunters starts based black, then based Eshin Grey and then dry brushed Mechanicus.  I appreciate the kind words!

Because I wanted him to stand out, mostly.  I was originally going to name hims "The White Wolf" of Fenris or some such.  I wanted to try my hand at a white colored model as well just to expand my horizons.
