Thunder_god
I've shred my Bjorn WIP & Grey Hunter test bed, so its time to get serious in rebuilding my Wolves to a strength they have not enjoyed since 3rd edition! Here is my last WIP thread, long since grown cold... http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/269263-warriors-of-the-rout/?hl=%2Bwarriors+%2Brout#entry3291396 Many of those chaps are being reworked into the current list and mind set. This rebuild will feature at least 40 Grey Hunters, 15-30 Blood Claws, and many other models. Like the title says, I want a full Great Company, so I figure 100-120 models by the time it is all said and done. Here is my first batch of Hunters, almost done! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/1E0DDFF9-191C-405C-8639-72AA4371C9C1_zpspdvh6iwf.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/F87BF3AA-A22D-4657-B478-E76C581D38F7_zpsbqpaqd1l.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/F2D08D52-5C51-4BE8-8EE3-8C8518CB846A_zpsgzqihmr2.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/BB25BDD9-DC14-4896-89A6-7166D26A5FFB_zpsd107rrxi.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/31EF33A1-112E-4ECB-876D-9181243EA16C_zpswrqhds9t.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/09845FD0-7E6F-491E-9686-D4E99B9EBFAA_zpswm2yp6gw.jpg The base color is Vallejo Air Pale Blue Grey (RLM76), the gold is Vallejo Alcohol Base Metallics Old Gold. The bases are Dragonforge Ancient Ruins. The axes are from the Chaos Warriors set. My Sky Warriors must have axes. Speaking, of, here is the start to a converted Harald: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/3E7D7B3E-3467-478F-94A0-8B2F03D45AE1_zpsgwl7iucq.jpg It's Krom's axe, and the head is from the Grey Knights box. Now, I need to find a suitable head with just the right bastsh*t crazy expression on it. I think a box of Chaos Horsemen is in my near future. So, how's that for a start? Karack Blackstone
Sweet. Your armor color looks 30K ish too; could use your force as either 40K or 30K. I think the finished looking models will really show well, once all your painting is done. Thunder_god
My Contemptor Dred conversion: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/Wolves/6398D158-898E-4FCF-811A-17C61B760944_zps3h9l5rjn.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/295868-tgs-great-company-build-blog/#findComment-3791767 Share on other sites
mactire
Great work on the dread, the amount of bling is spot on. Harald looks very promising, keep posting as you go, your GC looks like it could be very interesting and unique. skeletoro
Really like your stuff. Nice to see some FW bits mixed in there, something I like to do myself!! Is that adeptus grey/ pale blue grey on the grey hunters too? I used a bit of PBG on my caraphractii but may have to add more because I really like the hue now that I see it on your guys. I had built up to it through dark blue grey, medium sea grey and barley grey, if I remember right (I've been trying all sorts of things lately that it's starting to feel a bit like Roald Dahl's George's Marvellous Medicine - need to write my recipes down as I go!!!) Still struggling a little to find a good VMA medium grey to sit just below pale blue grey though. Medium sea grey is ok, but something slightly bluer would suit me a little better. I have blue grey but for some reason I have shied away from it, even though it seems like an obvious choice, hmm. I want to phase out citadel as much as possible as it doesn't agree too much with my crappy airbrush. Edit: looking again, that contemptor has an almost-ideal blue grey for me. I might just try a dark blue grey/medium something grey (sea, maybe?) pale blue grey triad some more too see if I can replicate that... Anyway I have found that Ulthuan Grey is a gift from the allfather himself. You might want to give it a try for edge highlights over the PBG. Like the PBG it's a light cold grey but it is even paler. I have actually started using it 80% of the time in lieu of white for extreme highlights because it protects me a little from going too white. On the other hand, I also like it as an extreme contrast paint for white tips on wolf fur. The cold white complements wolf fur's warm hues beautifully. Anyway, give it a try and tell me what you think! Thunder_god
Thank you Skeletoro. It is PBG over German Grey, primed black first. I then applied a thin filter of AK Interactive Blue-Brown enamel filter thinned even more so with white spirit. Since the Vallejo is acrylic, the enamel filter will not harm it. Ideally, I'd love to mix the PBG from Tamiya colors, as they are my favorite to airbrush. The Contemptor started out as overall Adeptus battle grey, then had the PBG misted on. The scary thing is I did that after the model was finished! Thank goodness for fine control on an Iwata airbrush! I too have some cataphractii conversions. I'll get them up soon. Been striving to finish this first pack. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/295868-tgs-great-company-build-blog/#findComment-3792917 Share on other sites
skeletoro
Nice. My airbrush is total rubbish - $50 el cheapo from Super Cheap Auto. It's a generic Chinese gravity fed dual action with the store's logo etched on the side. Can't complain with the price but I do yearn for something a little better. It has rubber o-rings, which break down in contact with the Tamiya cleaner... learned this the hard way. :( Gets the job done though, I guess. What's the benefit of using an enamel filter rather than an acrylic glaze? I used a US blue grey +glaze medium glaze over my cataphtactii and it completely knocked out the highlights. Oops. Think I am going to have to re mask and re-apply some PBG over the top. Sigh!!! Still, getting the hang of my masking fluid, slowly. So it's a little less daunting than it was. Thunder_god
I have the enamel stuff from my military models, so it's just handy. That's all. Went by the local GW store and snagged a box of Marauder Horsemen. Epic awesomeness for the Viking-like bits. Those heads are going to make some killer Wolves. So inspired, here's my Harald stand in all mocked up. I know he's off kilter and has some work to go, but it gives the basic idea. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/Wolves/7069E7BC-F0EC-4F02-ACE2-F0DA08AA83DF_zpskcr0pv9w.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/Wolves/DC8421AD-6450-4E35-B598-FAA51782C61F_zps50eontqa.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/Wolves/0A894E04-2F00-4529-8B5A-718AC8F1B759_zpsp0wrjvzh.jpg I love the berserk look on that head, and the eye patch seals the deal. I'm going to give him some more pelts to balance the magic asbestos troll cloak. What do y'all think? Thunder_god
Been tied up with work & readying a nursery for baby, girl, so I've only done so e assembly. Here's a Wolf Guard or Grey Hunter with an Axe that I've cooked up that I really like the pose of: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/Wolves/DA661979-BB3B-4A56-A723-C71599C767B5_zpswznoh7gq.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/Wolves/3A85FBFB-A98A-436D-89C6-2F3C9DBA44D4_zps9y1f1vb8.jpg It's the Grey Knight hammer, FW mkV legs, a Chaos Marauder head, & a little fun. I'll change the hammer peen to an axe blade once I find the one I like. I think he's going to be a fun one. chaplainmikey
I really like that conversion, all the individual parts complement each other nicely. Need to get some Marauder heads. Kassill
Marauder heads are probably some of my favorite individual modelling bits. They just add that right amount of uniqueness without getting crazy like some of the SW heads do. Also the size I quite like as the generic SW heads seem a bit big to me.Great stuff here, really love your Harald conversion. Will look stunning painted up. Thunder_god
Thank you. Here he is with a little tweaking: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/Wolves/21A31CC5-9337-422B-A941-DA77C5770144_zpsevemttlz.jpg I rocked the torso towards the back foot, to give him a sense of momentum in his swing, and used the finecast frost axe head. I think that works best. I'm also back working on my Rune Priest: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/Wolves/4F696C13-3B1E-40E4-BA20-B2AF8529553C_zpslrlo60vv.jpg Thanks for the feedback. Thunder_god
Thank you Creamywynch. I really want him to have that berserk look, as if it's taking all his self control to be that dangerous. Here's the axe wielding fellow ready to be base coated with the next 10 hunters: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/Wolves/D7EF4984-5FFE-4092-8838-E20AF7738BE9_zpstjuoej64.jpg He's obviously about out of self control! And here's one if my TDAWG models: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v424/wrnjr/Wolves/F25C1DE9-7F03-4807-A304-93586B181CEA_zpsj7wz4mnt.jpg He was armed with a SS & an Axe...but since that's been invalidated, I need to rearm him. Thunder hammer or WC? What say you? Thanks for the kind words. This Great Company will be ready for the hunt soon! FenrisWolf
I can second everything that Mithril says. Awesome conversions there, and I have some idea for further wolves for me. And the little one will take a lot of time!!! Mine caused a three and a half year hiatus! But the most awesome thing I've got is a picture of her and mommy in a game store with my 6 month old daughter looking through a codex (Ork, but at least it is a start!). Great conversion work!! Thanks again for the hook up!! Hope the little girl is healthy and strong!! ...after all, she going to need to swing that axe soon!! ;) End of Line Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/295868-tgs-great-company-build-blog/#findComment-3835274 Share on other sites
