Is the Horus Heresy series ever going to end?

I recently finished reading the 21st book in the series.  I know I'm about 9 books behind.   Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying the series, for the most part anyway (a couple of books were not very good, but most are enjoyable).  I already picked up the next 7 books, and I will read them, and probably keep going after that.  But I have to wonder:

Is the series ever going to actually end?

Will we ever actually get to see the Siege of Terra?

I've played the Horus Heresy board game, which is pretty good.  I would really, really like to read a full-length novel description of the siege, or even a trilogy of novels about the siege (but not more than a trilogy).  Preferably written by Abnett or ADB.  And I'd like to read those books in the next year or two, not in a decade.

Am I the only one who'd like to see this happen sooner rather than later?

It's a 7 year civil war fought by an empire that spans the galaxy with hundreds of thousands of super soldiers (actually probably a couple million? Haven't bothered adding it up) and millions of grunts. I'm not surprised they're expanding it this much, it makes a lot of sense, and it's better than Istvaan -> Horus points his fleet at Terra and hits the gas pedal -> Siege of Terra

I think we are roughly halfway through at this point. I hope they keep releasing anthologies that flesh out lesser known bits of the Heresy that stand apart from the main narrative line.

I would especially love for them to go back and release anthologies covering stuff like Isstvan III and V in more detail. Heck, even some Great Crusade stuff would be great, although maybe someday they can start a Great Crusade series... Oh wow. Now that would be fun.

Although the fifty book mark seems sensible, I doubt BL will be aiming for specific a number of volumes (however, I could be wrong). Given that the authors involved in the series have periodic meetings - I believe the pace is dictated by choice of what to write next. Is there an overall plan involved? I'd say probably. It is possible, nay, probable that certain conflicts, new and old, would receive more than one book. The battle for Tallarn immediately springs to mind. The Siege of Terra is another - which will likely be a trilogy imho, to 'bookend' the series (a trilogy to start and a trilogy to end). Do I have any evidence to claim such? Nope. Not really any at all. It's just some guesses on my part.

As for the answer to the eponymous question: Yes, obviously. It may be many years down the line but an end must come. In the mean time, enjoy it while you can. I'm reveling in Forge World's HH series, myself, and BL's series takes up considerable space on my bookcase. ^_^

There's way more money to be made off the  backs of fans before they call it.

Cynicism aside, the timeline is maybe 4/10 of the way through I think as of the last book. We have literally untold stories of the majority of legions both loyal and traitor at this point to tell WHY they either weren't at Terra or WHAT they were doing during this seven year civil war.

Then, and I do mean THEN, once they finish the actual death of Horus you do realize they have another several year time period of the Traitor Legions being slowly pushed back into the Eye, right? That's at least another dozen or more books just in that. THEN you have the untold stories of Vulkan, the remaining Loyal primarchs and how they slowly died or disappeared and on the other foot what the Demon Primarchs what were doing in the Eye.

So....yeah. We still have a long way to go.

I agree. Expect they've got an overall storyline with minor ones planned out. If they come up with cool ideas I'm sure they add them in with 'extra' books. They'll be an end, just a question of how many years this'll go on for. They've covered most events I know about but I'm sure there are more. Looking forward to the Siege of Terra and more on the battles on Mars.

Odds are they'll be a Scouring series when the Horus Heresy ends. Not sure how much they'll cover on the primarchs going missing. Might keep the mystery like they've done with the two missing primarchs/legions.

Would be nice having the reign of Goge Vandire or the Maelstrom events covered. Heck since the Path of the Eldar did well they could do their fall or the Great Crusade. That's one of the great things about 40K, lots of good history to expand on.

I agree but their is a chance some of us might be dead just through accident or disease or Darwin award!

Such is life. Sometimes authors die before finishing, like Dave Gemmel and Robert Jordan (though the latter's death actually improved the final books by replacing him with a superior author [And yes, I feel bad for saying that]). Maybe I will die before my favorite series end (I just hope I reach the final, 23rd Dresden File). But I wouldn't want them to change their own timetables just because of that possibility.

Benefit of many authors means hopefully this wouldn't be a problem - not that I'm wishing that upon anyone!

And the great strength of an IP that multiple authors can contribute to from myriad perspectives.

They'll milk it every first super duper special edition, and extra limitied 7 page novella they can produce. The first couple of books were exciting now im a bit meh about it.

plus the amount of time time it takes to release the paperback is strenuous.

im looking foward to the death guard transformation
