Sons of Horus paint help

I didn't know whether to post this here or in painting and modelling so sorry if it's in the wrong place.

Does anyone know how to paint the SoH like the models on FW website? I emailed them about it but they sent the scheme from their legion paint guide (the one with SoH, EC, DG and WE) but that guide only uses GW paints and it looks different to the actual painted models on their site.

Thanks.

Try looking for Sheeps Sons of Horus guide, its pretty damm amazing. Either on Warseer or his blog Forlorne Hope.

Im pretty sure that he also shares his recepies smile.png

Edit: It seems to be 70:30 mix of panzer aces USMC tank crew and Astronomican Grey, Highlighted with 50:50 mix and lastly pure astro grey (on hard lines i imagine?) Apply weathering as you like.

I would like directly, but B&C wont let me copy paste stuff -.-

I really like Sheeps, they look awesome with all the weathering, thanks for sharing that recipe. I'll definitely do a test model in that shade.

But I really like the darker green that forge world use on their SoH, and would like to try my hand at that shade too.

From an email I got back from them asking them about the Imperial Fists recipe they use, it seems to me that they mostly (if not exclusively) use tamiya clear paints for airbrushing.

Since those paints are usually thinner and easier to layer, they might be getting a better depth of colour out of the paint scheme that we might be able to with brushes. But thats just my guess.

Oh I've seen his before! Yes that kinda green is gooood. Thank you. Ill dig through the thread to find the recipes :)

I've gotten pretty close to the SOH colors using P3 Coal Black mixed with P3 Thornwood Green and then hit with a black/burnt umber (delvin mud) wash. For highlights add in a lighter blue color. For shading added in some black.

Thanks :) I'll do a few test models when I get some models of all these different schemes.

I'd suggest mixing Coal Black with Menoth White Base for the base color, adding a bit more Coal Black for shading, and then mixing more Menoth White Base and Menoth White Highlight for the highlights.

Yeah this is pretty spot on. I'd still recommend mixing in some thornwood green to get that deep sea green color, but for highlights menoth white + base color totally works.

I too tried the FW paint recipe and found it too bright.

I looked around a bunch of other people's recipes, and played around on the B&C painter, and in the end I tried out a basecoat of 50:50 Dark Reaper and Kabalite Green, then drybrushed the FW main mix over it, and it came out pretty well.

Unfortunately I've yet to get a picture that actually captures the true colour properly! But it's a real relief to finally have a recipe for the Sons that I like!

As aforementioned, FW have said in correspondence that they use another company's green for the SoH - there's nothing in the GW range that gets close to it. I can't remember where the scheme was posted though - I'm certain I've seen it at some point recently. Will try and dig it out.

An initial search has yielded little, but:

esinhorn's: "USMC tankcrew with Coliea Greenshade wash" looks good:

I dunno why they don't just say the recipe they actually use, they do for all the other ones, I've asked about NL and AL before and they've told me even though they used other companies paints. That one looks pretty good though, thank you :)

Here's the recipe I was talking about. Its the base color for my iron warriors before I layer metal onto them:

1. Base P3 Bastion Grey + P3 Coal black + Boltgun Metal + P3 Cryx Bane

2. Shade Base + P3 Thamar Black

3. Highlight Base + P3 Frostbite

5. Wash Black and Burnt Umber (Devlin Mud)

You can see the color of the basecoat before the washes are applied in the spots I smudged with my giant man fingers. The one on the right is a streamlined recipe I've been experimenting with. Not as much depth of color, but way less paint requirements and similar results. It looks really slivery because I drybrushed a metal paint over the top. The actual finish is like the part on the right:

1. Base P3 Coal black + Vallejo gun metal blue

2. Shade Base + P3 Thamar Black

3. Highlight Base + Vallejo gun metal blue

5. Wash Black and Burnt Umber (Devlin Mud)

My test colour for SoH green might be close to what you want, although the recipe is a little bit complicated and uses Vallejo paints.

The base colour is approximately 1/3 Vallejo Model Black Green, 1/3 German Uniform, 1/3 Prussian Blue, with a drop or two of black. Add more German Uniform for highlights and wash with badab black.

However results may vary. Much like my cooking, my paint mixing skills tend to ignore the recipe and I tweak based on sight.
