"Sisters of Battle, the Black Legion, a fresh cast of Fire-born and threads that spin out from the first trilogy, it's a brave new chapter in the saga of the Salamanders. Rebirth is about a beginning, but also the distant heretical echoes of the past some ten thousand years in the making. It's a story long in the making, enshrined in a First Edition epitomising everything a finely crafted artefact of the Salamanders should be." - Nick Kyme

The First Edition of Rebirth is presented as a stunning hardback book: a drake-scale cover over a weighty tome of gold-edged paper. Inside, as well as the new novel itself, there is a collection of short stories, one of them completely exclusive to this edition.

READ IT BECAUSE

Rebirth represents a new chapter in the story of the Salamanders, set during one of the most notorious conflicts of the 41st millennium - the Promethean wars. Veteran Salamanders author Nick Kyme introduces us to a fresh cast of heroes and villains, as the new series kicks off in explosive style.

I read the first chapter extract and can say that style wise, Mr. Kyme is continuing what he laid down in the previous Salamander trilogy, with a jump ahead in timeline and a new company and characters.

Something about his pacing always bugs me, though none can fault him for being under-descriptive, he tends even in this first chapter to over explain a scene in wordy, codex termonology, that doesn't let the narrative flow naturally. Show it, don't explain it: is often a criticism set against authors, and some BL authors have been accused of turning portions of their novel into paragraph descriptions that wouldn't be out of place in a Index Astartes article or in an actual codex.

Don't get me wrong, I like Kyme's work when he frees himself of these pacing issues and lets the characters breathe, like in the novella Scorched Earth. A perfect example of someone making changes to their regular style, and it paying off in spades with organic characters, and the story being told through the eyes of the characters.

Five pages into the first chapter, and it immediately gets back into the Salamanders books familiar ground, which will see me pass on this BL first edition.

It's funny with all the Hulabaloo in the other thread about Templars and Hayley, I would actually warmly welcome another Author's take on the Sallies, even if it included kicking all the tin cans of lore down, in order to raise something new up, from a different point of view. It's healthy I guess, and when I saw that the Sallies were being given a "New Chaper" in their history, I secretely wished someone else got a shot to adding to the lore and to give us their view on one of the most pschologically unique chapters. Even if there were naturally white skinned salamanders walking around, I would welcome the new direction and views.

I tend to pass on Kyme's work, but you are right on about Scorched Earth. I don't know what happened there, but I he should try it more often.

Definitely going to pass on this though. I really hope that BL don't freak out and pull the plug on First Editions after this one sells poorly.

Pass, Heresy Hard backs are $45 aus, which is bad as it is, they want $90 aus for this. I'll just wait i guess, who knows might not even get it.... just wanted to vent as im sick of getting excited to see a new release then see that its "LimitedSupaUltraEditionBRU"

Not much disposable income for me, I'll just sit over here and remain a paperback peasant

I think it's a shame he's doing more Salamanders. The first trilogy was all right, but by the end I was pretty bored of the adventures of Brother-Librarian Ap'Ost'Ro'Phe and co., and I thought his writing really came to life any time the Marines Malevolent turned up.

I used to like the Salamanders in that brief period where they presented a tiny sliver of ethnic diversity in the 40k universe, but after those books I'm all about permanently furious, borderline renegades who hate literally everyone they meet. I'd be much more excited about a trilogy for them.

I don't think Kyme has done enough to give the Sallies their own character, they're basically generic Astartes with a burn fetish. Maybe if they had a human character to show that dichotomy a little better it would help, I dunno, aside from the first novel he did I'm underwhelmed. Definitely going to pass on this one.

Have to agree that his naming conventions are infuriating.

Pass on this as well but liked the sallie stories. Want add let see some new blood do some of it. And like to see some of the internet critics do any betterohmy.png tongue.png .

What's wrong with the base books? They were fairly good, my only problem was that they lacked any real worldbuilding to them. They had good characters and some of the more badass moments in the Black Library, just that they didn't truly flesh out the Salamanders.

I liked the base books re-read them acouple of times .My thing is the price they are asking. Ihave some first addition books where I paid a good chunk of change but not a high price to start at I do not see these retaing value down the road even for collectors.

Oh yeah, that's obvious. Black Library collector's editions are hilariously overpriced and a complete waste of money. And the book itself and all its unique, exclusive short stories will end up plastered on every torrent site. All these special editions the Black Library make just encourage avid piracy.

I'm just really struggling to see the reason behind releasing this so soon after Talon of Horus. Are they doing First Editions of all major BL books now? That seems excessive.

Talon of Horus made sense because its quite possibly the most anticipated BL book since Horus Rising. But a Salamanders novel? It doesn't make sense.

I think they may learn after this one (unless this surpasses all expectations) that doing it for each novel is going to become tiresome. Abnett or ADB, yes. Wraight even! But I'm struggling to get my enthusiasm up for this one.

Whoops. BL in this case meant Black Library. Although using BL in a sentence about the Black Legion can be totally confusing. My bad.

EDIT: Whoops again. My brain stopped working for a second. I totally forgot that the Black Legion are actually in this book. I should probably take a nap.

They've been doing this for a while. BL has pretty much turned completely into GW, only they sell books for hilarious prices and make special editions that are hilariously overpriced. The Black Library apparently didn't get the memo about why special edition comics were bad in the 90's.

Did they represent that? They have black skin and red eyes. That doesn't mean they're not of caucasian descent. The cover of Salamanders shows a Salamander's face. It looks like a caucasian guy with dark skin and red eyes.

I think the only legion that's unambiguously not caucasian is the Scars.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Limited Edition Horus Heresy novellas. I think they are a great concept, and a fantastic execution. Side stories that aren't required reading, but expand on the universe nicely. I have no problem with expensive limited editions, as long as they are well written.

I'm just not sure that a Salamanders novel by Kyme could ever be worth this First Edition treatment. He has surprised me before, like with his novella Scorched Earth, but so far that was the exception.

Now, a First Edition of something by Abnett, Wraight, or Sanders... Now we're talking.

As I said, "in that brief period". During 3rd and 4th edition, the 'Eavy Metal team interpreted "black skin" as an African skin tone, with normal eyes. For example, the Salamanders Captain miniature pictured in the Index Astartes series, Codex Armaggedon, and the 4th edition Space Marine codex. In their Index Astartes article, their gene-seed was apparently notable only for making them a bit slower than other Marines. The artwork showed at least one unhelmed Salamander with dark skin and a distinctly non-Caucasian appearance.

The Studio miniatures had been repainted in time for the 5th edition codex, but there was still a minor furore when Salamander came out and explicitly mentioned jet black skin and glowing red eyes. I remember Kyme having to explain it wasn't his decision in an interview.

Although, that's nearly always been the case, and explained alongside it due to genetics and the radiation from living on Nocturne. I don't see it as being a problem now, especially not in how it's explained.

Just as a point: if this book is anywhere near as lovely as Talon of Horus, it's almost worth it...
