Put simply a friend of mine played his first game of 7th edition a few weeks ago.

His opponent showed up with a DE force that cosisted of 2 HQ's, 4 Troops and 6 heavies i.e. 1 HQ, 2 troops and 3 heavies twice.

For battleforged is this legal?

I've read through the section of factions and allies etc. in the BRB and to say that it's not very clear is an understatement.

I just have a hard time in believeing that the game desigers inended for the above to happen. Having said that this is GW...

TIA

Yeah, that's a Battle-forged list. Two Combined Arms Detachments with minimum mandatory slots and maxed heavy support.

The key rules are:

A player using the Battle-forged method must organise all the units they want to use into Detachments.

There is no limit to the number of Detachments a Battle-forged army can include and you can use any mixture of Detachments you have available, within the restrictions of the rules that follow.

Yes. Each Detachment lists its own restrictions. The Combined Arms Detachment just says:

All units chosen must have the same Faction (or have no Faction).

That's it. If everything in it has the same Faction and you've filled the mandatory slots on its force org chart, it's a legal Combined Arms Detachment and you can add it to your Battle-forged army.

One should also note that a second or third Combined Arms Detachment doesn't even have to be from the same Codex/Faction. The second Combined Arms Detachment above could have been Craftworld Eldar, Tau, Necrons, even Tyranids! The rule that Lucien Eilam quoted only applies to a single Detachment, not all Detachments of that type.

Allied Detachments still have to be a different codex/Faction from the Warlord's Detachment, though (and even that rule has a couple exceptions).

I would actually expect that this was the designers origins intention - that they be from different factions, but it didn't translate into print somehow.

Ah well, on with the show so to speak.
