Targeting the banners

No. The section on Line of Sight covers this specifically:

For one model to have line of sight to another, you must be able to trace a straight, unblocked line from its body (the head, torso, arms or legs) to any part of the target’s body.

Sometimes, all that will be visible of a model is a weapon, banner or other ornament he is carrying. In these cases, the model is not visible. Similarly, we ignore wings and tails, and antennae even though they are technically part of a model’s body. These rules are intended to ensure that models don’t get penalised for having impressive banners, weaponry, and so on.

Actually I dont believe even that is quite right anymore.   I dont have my BRB handy, but the shooting model doesnt not have to draw LOS from its eyes anymore.    Any part of its body can be the origin of your line of sight now (I guess to represent it getting down on its knees, etc).   Otherwise, correct.   Weapons and banners and such dont count on the target model.

Nope, Lucien quoted it right.

That's correct, I must have opened the old rulebook by mistake. I've updated my post.

It's completely irrelevant to the question of course, which is about the target, not the source. The point was the second half of the quotation, which is identical in the latest edition.

Seems a little odd... Not including wings for Los, so big tyranids or daemons will effectively be hidden even though the huge wings are poking out of cover... What if you were against a gargantuan flying creature? I'm pretty sure the wings are a large portion of the model.

If the wings counted for LoS, you'd get people modelling them with the wings folded to make them a smaller target. This way they're the roughly the same size for everyone, and we can all get on with modelling things to look cool instead of for some beardy in-game effect.

Models with big wings are generally large targets anyway even without them.
