Dreadnaughts don't really have a place in a competitive list. What they can do can be done for a lot less by other choices. And this is a huge shame because dreads are cool.

 

If your building something just for fun then go ahead. Id only be putting one in if I wanted an expensive plasma cannon.

GW missed the ball with GK Dreadnoughts. They should have been Librarian Dreads from the start, with CC options that would give players tough choices between dedicated range, dedicated CC, or a mix of both. What we got was a mono build that made little sense, yet was OP for the cost. That lead to the current garbage we have now. At any point GW could have made the right decision and made GK Dreadnoughts Librarians with CC options that rival good range options. It's not like GW didn't just make SW Dreads worth noticing, and BA Dreads already have meaningful choices including a Psyker Dread GKs should have had from the beginning.

 

Personally, a Ven Dread ML2 Psyker with access to NDK weapon options would be tough to ignore, as taking up an Elite slot means choices, and choices means greater customer satisfaction, which leads to more sales, and therefore growth in the company's finances. Yet, as we all know by now, is not the path GW has chosen for themselves ... or us.
