Weathering a Decal

Recommended Posts

I've been screwing around with decals and weathering them over the past few days. I managed to semi-competently weather two white decals on black surface (big eagle and mechanicus symbol on a knight's shoulderpads) by lightly drybrushing them with Abbadon Black, heavier at the edges and lighter at the center. I'm happy with how it turned out: it looks like the white paint has been rubbing off and the symbols blend into the black nicely.

Now I want to weather a large black aquila decal on Mephiston Red (Mechrite Red) surface. It's on the knight's shinplate. But, I cannot decide how to weather it best. Should I drybrush the edges of it with Mephiston Red and blur red into the black? Or would it look better to drybrush black outward from the decal and blur black into red?

Some more marginally helpful background... the knight itself is pretty clean with no weathering, and the end goal is to make it look like "we painted it a month ago, then we marched it some, the main paint is holding but the decals are starting to peel."
