The Great Company of Vidarr Modrsson of the Red Sail

Recommended Posts

One day I shall learn how to take a proper picture, but until then:

Jarl Vidarr Modrsson, Wolf of the Red Sail.

Vidarr Modrsson became Jarl of the Drakeslayers after the death of Krom Dragongaze on the Knight world of Kincora. The Drakeslayers visisted that world at the request of the House's Nobles, who were waging war against the planet's population. The Nobles spoke of the populace turning from the Emperor's guidance at the agitation of Word Bearer warband. While normally a Knight world's Nobles would rather face defeat and death before calling for aid, this Word Bearer's sway of the population claimed many of the Knights as well. Krom Dragongaze, fresh from Sanctus Reach campaign, saw much glory in both purging a Word Bearer warband of such size and rescuing a Knight world, so rushed the Drakeslayers to the besieged world and made immediate contact with the Knight's Nobles.

The planet burned as the Nobles had explained, with much of the populace besieging the Knight's keep and the defensive lines in total anarchy. In some fields, daemons ran amuck through the PDF and lone knights who turned traitor, while the planetary capital was an atomic wasteland. The only location of relative peace was the principal Knight's fortress of Tara , where landing fields had already been cleared for Jarl Krom's arrival. Before an impromptu assembly of his Company, Jarl Krom promised glory and immortality was waiting below them, and deeds worthy of saga needing only heroes to earn them.

Krom Dragongaze's Drakeslayer made planet fall in two waves, the first wave to make contact with the Nobles and direct the second wave into immediate combat. The first wave of the Rout landed in perfect order, meeting the hastily assembled Knights of Kincora at the gates of their keep. As the second wave broke through the atmosphere and begun their descent, the truth about Kincora's heresy thundered at the assembled warriors of the Rout. As Jarl Krom finished his introductions, the Knight's keep unvieled it's guns and spat death into the Rout.

Vidarr Modrsson was in command of the second wave, and it was at his command that the inbound drop shios abort its descent. The act of treachery performed by the Knights of Kincora was absolute and unrelenting, and withing minutes of the first battle cannon shell being launched, nothing lived in the fields surrounding Tara. It was during this slaughter that the besiegers of Tara made contact with the Wolves, and explained the aweful truth of Kincora's curruption.

The world was of little importance outside of it's Knight, and the strenght of the Knights had been spent over countless decades of unending warfare. Only a few Knights remained, and it was these proud few that brought treachery to an unsuspecting world. The leader of the Knights, known as the Ard Rig, had bargained with the Dark Powers to return his House to it's former glory. The price of a timeless name was the blood of his world, which he paid gladly. When his youngest daughter had discovered his actions, she try to alert the planetary authorities before it was too late. The atomic destruction of the captial was her only answer, and she rallied what was left of the PDF to purge her father's betrayal.

Vidarr Modrsson swore an oath to hunt down those responsible for the death of his Jarl, and with the loyalists of Kincora fighting at his side, brought a new level of intensity to the battlefield. Where daemons used to run amok through the PDF, the Wolves under Modrsson formed shield walls and broke the daemonic tide. The now openly traitorous Knights were hunted from combined parties of Knights and Stormfang gunships. The Word Bearer warband under Corphayus Jaqcue proved to be a canny foe, and used it was before the walls of Tara that Modrsson met Corphayus Jaqcue blade to blade. The now descrated bodies of the Rout were strung about the field in mockery of their past deeds, whereas Krom's corpse was left to be savaged by the beasts of the warp and the elements. Corphayus Jaqcue proved to be an warrior of great skill, and Modrsson was hard pressed to counter the vile Lord of Chaos. It was only when Modrsson found the now shattered Axe of Krom that he managed to cast down the arch traitor. Corphayus Jaqcue cast himself and his warband into the Warp before the final blow could land, and thus cheated Modrsson of his vengeance.

The Rout and the remaining loyal Knights purged the Knightly keep of Tara of all the traitors, with nearly all the traitorous Knights accounted for. In uneasy peace that followed, Modrsson decided to return the Dragonslayers to Fenris to rebuild the company and  honor their dead before setting off to complete his oath. The remnants of the Company cast their vote upon Modrsson to lead them, and his first act as Jarl was to declare a hunt upon Corphayus Jaqcue and his kin. His second act was to allow the Knight Bean Sidhe, piloted by the daughter of the Knightly traitor, to join his Hunt as she was exiled from her House for her families actions.

That's a great piece of fluff Kieran. Id like to see more on his background.

One tiny wee criticism on the model through some washes on it.

I can't remember the new names but a wee bit of ogryn flesh on the skin, abbadon black on the gold trim and griphon sepia on the wolf totem to give it a nice bone effect.
