FenrisWolf
Hail brothers! I know a number of you use GW's paints and I know a fair number also use Vallejo. GW's are pricey and spray can options are limited. I also have not found a local store that has the Vallejo lines. I do have access to Taimya, both bottles and sprays. I also like the mix of greys that they have - particularly German grey. It also comes in spray cans, and since I don't have an airbrush I figured this might make painting larger vehicles a bit easier. So my question is does anyone have any experience using their paints with GW models? I'll probably still use some GW colors too, it looks like Citadel has better wash options. But base coat and layering might be switchable. I paint a dark grey wolf force, my take on pre heresy colors, using Adeptus battlegrey, but I think that has been changed in Citadel's new line. This is some basic colors. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/296367-other-paints-than-citadel/ Share on other sites
maverik_girl
Funny how you mention this, I was literally at a hobby store and saw the Taimya line! I was actually looking for Privateer Press paints as I heard good things about it and how affordable they were. I was seeking for Greatcoat Grey until I came across Taimya paints and their sprays. My only issue with Taimya spray is that it's so tiny. I'm not sure how much you can do with it?! maybe doing one large vehicle or only maybe a full pack basecoated. Wolf Guard Dan
I am trying to bring my self to start transitioning to another line but I haven't yet. It is impossible to match greys across lines. I paint my armor grey as well. Also citadel washes are too good. Plus a most people use citadel paints so if there is a paint scheme I want to copy it is usually with those paints. codyrstuart
I personally use the Army Painter line. With a black undercoat, their wolf grey comes out better looking than GWs fang grey IMO. FenrisWolf
I'm not sure I want much blue in my grey. It seems Tamiya has a bigger selection of greys in their line based on WWII colors. Ragnar_Einarsson
Vallejo have some great paints but they can be pricey since most online stores sell them in colour packages. Taimya is nice too. But their washes are a bit too glossy. But Citadel paints do wonders. By far IMO the best line of paints out there. Great basecoating, excellent coverage (eveb yellow) and washes do all the magic. Using wash you really can give your minis depth easy and speed paint. One of the few GW non minis products that are great. So my advice is invest in Citadel paints and use washes to get the desierable color effect. FenrisWolf
I was planning on using the Citadel paints for colors and washes, but switching to the Tamiya for base coat colors. How do the Citadel paints work on top of non-Citadel? Anyone with experiences to share? Ragnar_Einarsson
Tamiya as base (Vallejo too) and the Citadel Wash and Citadel for highlight shuld work without problems as long as you leave your basecoat enough time to dry. Citadel colours dry faster and in my experience if I got bad result with Tamiyan it was only when I rushed it. FenrisWolf
Great! I liked someone else's comment on Vallejo's transparent blue for plasma coils too. I guess I'll be getting a variety of paint manufacturers.
