Lednera
Let me start by greeting all of you. This post might not be a normal thread in that it is part a W.I.P. Thread and an oath to myself that I am declaring to all of you so I can be held accountable. Some of you might recall me from many years ago that I visite this forum and some of you might not have a clue who I am. I am a legally blind member of the Warhammer 40k community. In the past I entered the hobby as a way to keep my vision in check and I started collecting and painting figures as a form of visual exercises. In the last week or so I was told that my vision is no longer good enough for reading at a professional level. What this means is that my vision has progressed into a technical worse category. A couple of years ago I made a promise to go were the blind and visually impaired were not expected to be and miniature wargaming was one of them. Today I come back to the hobby to demonstrate that even with me loosing more of my vision that I am willing to take up the challenge once again. The first thing I have done is placed an order for the new Space Wolves “Battleforce”, paint set and tools to get back into the hobby. I have setup my adaptive equipment I used to do my hobby and I am just waiting for the package to arrive. As I work and have poor vision I will only be able to get to the modeling on my free time but I will offer that I will be able to complete either 1 hero miniature, 1 vehicle, or 1 pack of Space Wolves per month. At this time I am not looking to make an army for playing in 7th edition but just develop a Great Company as a collection that at some point might see the field of battle on a table. In recognition to this challenge I have named my Great Company, The Company of the Wolfstar – The Lost and Returned. The Great Company Symbol will be a stylized Eye of Aversion Rune that in our real world enviroment stands for the Rune of Good Harvest. I have chosen to make this mean that the Great Company was founded from a good harvest of recruits and a recovered vault of Space Wolves Gene-Seed. The name of the Wolf Lord is Markus Wolfstar, The Wise Wolf. It is my hope that this quest that I have set out on will be a source of inspiration to all of you who read this thread and that in the future we might meet across the table and you will see for yourself the capacity of those who are willing to do the impossible. Leif Bearclaw
Well best of luck to you. Lednera
Greetings B&C, My name is Luis Ramos, I have gone by many names in many forums and social media sites such as YouTube (Asajev the Sage) and The Bolter and Chainsword (Lednera). Today I wish to take the time to give you a better idea of what my condition is and how I have worked around it. As you know I am someone that at least in the United States qualifies the standard of the legal definition of blindness. Since this is a very broad statement I wish to focus it as it applies to me and its relation to our hobby. I have a set of condition known as Coloboma, Astigmatism, Myopia, Myopic Degeneration, and some other minor ones. All of this terms are medical terms but I can make simple translations so that you might get a better idea. Coloboma simply means that something is missing in this case in my eyeball from what the specialist has told me it is a very unique case of this condition. Astigmatism is when your eyeball is not a sphere but more like an american football or the back part of a spoon, this causes difficulty in being able to focus but can be corrected with glasses. Myopia is the condition of being nearsighted, while myopic degeneration is a condition that has no cure as far as I am aware and will cause blindness at some point. As we stand my myopic degeneration is stable so it has not continued to progress further. This covers a basic overview of my physical condition and if you wish to learn more of this conditions feel free to use google or wikipedia to learn more about them. Let me move on to how this things have affect my ability to participate in the hobby. Do to all the conditions that I have I am unable to just use my regular vision to build or paint our models. I have to use special tools such as video magnifiers that can be stand alone units or plugged into your computers. In the future I will upload pictures of some of the types of video magnifiers that I have used and if permitted I will link you to some that you can find on Amazon that I would advice to use from personal experience. The technology that I use is only a part of the technics that i have developed over the years in order for me to produce good quality models. A good friend of mine that was seeing how I painted through Google+ told me that my brush control was similar to how a blind person navigates around with a cane. I told him that was exactly what I was doing. I very lightly used the bristles of the brush to feel the model and guide the paint over the areas I wanted painted. This has given me great results altough I will admit it is more difficult with large models with flat areas. While I have been challenged in the past to do videos on how I do my work I have been unable to do any of this since i do not have the equipment or the time to produce high quality photos or videos to upload for others to learn. Please feel free and ask question if you wish to learn about anything that relates to blindness and how to resolve issues of loosing vision and staying in the hobby. It is very likely that I have already had an experience that can help you continue doing what you like and not have to give up on it. spjaco
Glad to hear you are staying in the hobby. I find your perserverance inspiring and I look forward to seeing your work. What you are doing is, in my own humble opinion; what makes a true measure of a man and in this case a Space Wolf. May your Great Company be large and powerful, your saga endless, and your enemies tremble until they wet themselves! It is very likely that I have already had an experience that can help you continue doing what you like and not have to give up on it. You are a true inspiration to show that you can do what you love to do no matter the challenges. As I've moved through my forties, my eyesight has changed as is typical for many people. I consider myself fortunate that my eyesight is still good at distance, but magnifiers have shifted from a nice thing to have to a necessity. I also had fears about my eyesight due to being newly diagnosed diabetic. But no issues yet, and I will hope it stays that way! Thank you for being an inspiration and showing what can be done! The blessings of Russ and the Allfather upon you! Have a tankard of ale or flagon of mead on me! Lednera
Hows it going guys I thank you all for the kind words that you have given and I will sure take that tankard. As of progress yesterday a spent an hour or two picking bitz to make the Wolf Guard Battle Leader. I finally settled on this bitz and de-molded them. This guy is named Olderf, he is the Master of the Vigil Guard a specialized section of the Grat Company's Wolf Guard that is designated as those who keep guard while the Council of Living Ancestors sleep. The Council was created after the campaign of Canis Malfei were the Habiru Necron Dynasty awoke from its eon long slumber. The members are venerable and contemptors that survived the onslaught. He is the eldest blood brother of Markus Wolfstar Kaerlson the one Space Wolf outside the Rune Priests and Wolf Priest that witnessed the birth of his saga when Markus was still mortal. Lednera
Hi guys here is a nerrative update. I have been busy at work so I can't do modeling during the week but during my lunch break I managed to write the first part that I hope is the origin saga of Wolf Lord Markus Wolfstar Kaerlson, The Wise Wolf and Wolf Guard Battle Leader Olderf, Master of the Vigil Guard ---------------------------- It was said by Rune Priest Alryak that a son of Fenris would return from the mists of time to lead a great host against the enemies of man. The Wolf Lord’s story starts in the final stages of the Battle of Prospero. Markus Wolfstar Kaerlson was born on Morkai’s Vigil one of the Space Wolves strike cruisers assigned to blockade Prospero. The strike cruiser engaged the traitor’s legion Paradox of Silence as it attempted to break through the blockade. On Morkai’s Vigil, Wolf Priest Helmar commanded the boarding actions against the Paradox of Silence. The assault the boarding parties were about to make were comprised of units of Kaerls led by the young Blood Claw packs of the great company. The commander of the Paradox of Silence was Kor’vi-tel the Obsidian Eyed. The Stormwolf assault craft launched from Morkai’s Vigil carrying the Blood Claws led Kaerl squadrons. The insertion point was through one of the ventral landing decks. Markus’s unit was led by Blood Claw Olderf, a somewhat impulsive Son of Russ. As the Stormwolf come into the landing zone the Stormfang escorts deployed cover fire for the units to deploy. The landing zone was secured within the first three minutes of the mission start. The Blood Claw squad commanders engraved the sacred rune known as the Eye of Aversion as they moved forward to the designated objectives. Blood Claw Olderf showed the Kaerls the most direct route to the command bridge of the Paraxos of Silence. As Olderf’s team moved deeper in to the maze of corridors Markus noticed how many of the heretics did not put up a fight. He slowly realized the burden that the Sons of Russ most carry, that no matter if the mortals are ignorant of what their immortal masters do they will be taken down just the same. Innocence in this case does not prove anything. As a mortal man Markus does not understand the nature of the purge he is helping in committing, but he known of duty and honor and both demand that he follows his leaders. The escalation of conflict increased as the strike units converged at the lower gates to the command bridge. Entire Blood Claw packs with their Kaerl support squads engaged in a pitch battle against the forces of the Thousand Sons. The heretical sorcerers used their magic to suppress many of the Kaerl units. At the sight of such a conflict Blood Claw Olderf jumped straight into the fray and vivisected one of the traitor marines that were controlling some of the automata. While that was an incredible feat of strength alone it created a different challenge for the mortal troops. When the puppet master that was the traitor marine was killed the automata went into hunter-killer mode and started assaulting the Kaerl units. When the focus of battle shifted from assault to defense in Markus’s unit they themselves started to act like Fenrisian wolves. The fire teams split and started to coordinate attacks to take down the mechanical killer. It was Markus’s honor to assault the beast and place a Krak grenade in the crack in its armor. The timing for Markus’s move had to be calculated to an exact moment in time. The mechanical beast counter-assaulted as the rest of the Kaerl unit fired upon the beast. Markus rolled to one side as the beast charged forward. He thought that was the easy part but the real challenge was to climb its back so he can deposit the device. He took a running jump and grasped one of the armor plates in the back of the machine. The force of the turn from the machine nearly made him loose his grip. Markus managed to secure his hold and as the focus of the machine was on his comrades he climbed the back of the machine. It was rather peculiar to him as the tide of battle raged around him it was as if time was slowing down for him the closer he got to the objective. He unclipped the Krak grenade and set it on a five second timer and then jumped off the machine. The muffled echo of the explosion confirmed that the machine’s spirit had been destroyed. The beast stopped moving and as Markus lifted his gaze he was able to see that the forces of the Allfather had broken through to the gates. It was just a matter of time before they were able to enter the command bridge and take down the commander of this ship. As Blood Claw Olderf’s unit advanced into the broken gates that lead to the command bridge Markus thought about what could corrupt someone as exalted as an immortal of the Allfather to fall from grace. The answer to his question was revealed as he witness the carnage that enveloped the command bridge. He witnessed as foul specters withered Kaerls and Sky Warriors alike. At the center of the maelstrom the Arch-Traitor Kor’vi-tel, The Obsidian Eyed was surrounded by a field of ethereal energies that protected him. The Sky Warriors pressed the assault even as the numbers dwindled from the force of the counter assault. The corrupted immortals were reapers of souls as waves of Kaerls fell at their feet. It was in Markus’s human heart, at that moment he realized that he was a fragile part of reality. Markus became aware that he would most likely not survive his actions and he will meet the elders soon. With an inner spirit that could rival the mighty Sky Warriors, Markus Wolfstar made up his mind and sealed his fate. The time had come for them, the traitors, to see what humanity can do even if they are not gods themselves. The assault on the bridge of the Paradox of Silence was a brutal murder make. Many of the Sons of Russ have fallen at the hands of Kor’vi-tel, The Obsidian Eyed. The closing blows happened in a few short moments that spanned only a lull in the rhythm of battle. As Kor’vi-tel pinned down Blood Claw Olderf , Markus realized the assault on the bridge was about to fail. In a moment of desperation he grabbed a Melta Bomb canister that he had been equipped with and hurled it into the combat that Olderf and Kor’vi-tel were engaged in. No thought was given to what his actions could mean for the battle of the Paradox of Silence. He only acted on baseline instincts. As the bomb moved and arced through the room time slowed down perception of battle came into clear focus. Blood Claw Olderf picked up on the device that was arced in his direction and as it landed in front of him, he rolled away into cover. The Melta Bomb ignited, and it created a brilliant flash of light that temporarily blinded all in the zone of combat. When the brilliant flare stopped, the bomb had created a small glowing adamantine plates crater were a moment ago stood Kor’vi-tel used to be standing. When Markus’s vision cleared he noticed that Kor’vi-tel had survived the direct attack but his ethereal field was now flickering. The final blow had failed and the Arch-Traitor was still standing. Markus prepared himself to meet his elders as Kor’vi-tel momentarily changed his focus to the new threat. In that instance the battle was won when Blood Claw Olderf rushed the Arch-Traitor and with a swift cleave with his chainsword killed Kor’vi-Tel, The Obsidian Eyed. Lednera
Well Greetings members of The Fang and B&C, I am here again with a brief update on my progress with the Great Company Project. I have basecoated the main body of Wolf Guard Battle Leader Olderf Frosthowl, Master of the Vigil Guard. I am going witht he Companies of Fenris painting tutorial if anyone wants to follow along in the project. The iPad version is great for us that have vision problems. We are able to use the Zoom function to get close and really see the pictures and text on the book. I wish to update you on some other technical news as it relates to the hobby from the point of view of a blind or legally blind hobbyist. Many of you might have used or are using magnification visors. I mean it is natural that when we get older our vision does not function as well as it used to be. Do to my personal conditions that define my vision problem I am unable to use this affordable types of aids. You might wonder then how can someone with the levels of restriction I have to do to stay in our hobby? The answer comes in the form of video magnification devices that can range from a couple of hundred dollars to a couple of thousand. You might be wondering what is a video magnifer? I would understand if you have not herd of them since they are not very common in the main stream market. So let me explain how the modern day video magnifiers function. We have thre categories, the portable hand held versions that are like normal magnifers, the portable mobile platforms.that can be connected to computer systems, and the stand alone that work independent of a computer system. I currently use a mobile platform version that connects to my laptop computer. I have discovered that it is starting to have technical issues were the video signal is being currupted so that has slowed down my ability to paint. However the technical issue of my own system does not reflect how an idnvidual with failing vision can or can not do what they enjoy. One additional thing I would like to address is the idea that our hobby only extends to the playing the game, painting the miniatures, and building the miniatures. We have forgotten that we have a forth area of the hobby that we only see it from the perspective of the Blackl Library novels. When we are in the hobby sometimes we think of the stories that could come from the battles we have in the form of battle reports or after action reports and tactica. I would like to point to the writing of fiction for our armies as part of the hobby. This activity is one that any of us can do even if our vision is limited. We might not be the best painters in the world or we might not like building the models. Yet, it might be possible that you enjoy the nerrative aspect of the game. In my case I have adopted the concept of nerrative design of an army. As I building my army I will write short stories about the heroes and squads that make up the army. So for example in my last post I gave you the first point in history that you see the origin of Wolf Lord Markus Wolfstar Kaerlson, The Wise Wolf. This nerrative is fun and makes the army mean more then just I am a tournament player that is only interested in winning games and changing the game peices as the meta game changes. Let me conclude this post by saying that we still have options to keep in our hobby and that those who have less vision or skill in modeling can still be part of the hobby by writing nerratives. Jochteas
I totally agree, to be honest with you the part of this where I one can generate there own backstory I feel drives my desire for the hobby almost more then anything else. Crafting a narrative to fit your imagination, then with that crafting an object to fit your narrative. Not to sound cheesy but its almost like turning fantasy into reality, and it is certainly something you can be proud of for years to come! As always I look forward to how your men turn out. Lednera
Hi guys I was digging around in the archives of my youtube channel and found an old video I did when Lester Bursley from awesomepainjob had asked to show our desk/workspaces. In the video you will see a sample of how I used to have my work area about a year ago. I have since moved and have slightly different setup but this should give you an idea how I worked. Please let me know if you have any questions about technology/resources that one could use outside of the hobby to be able to perform in our hobby. I am always a PM or a post away. http://youtu.be/b-LnWfh5ClM One other thing that is related to our hobby but that I wish to ask the community here is how would you feel about doing an anthology of short stories based on our own Great Companies. I am already writing sections of my Great Company great saga why not join me and try to publish a book/novel like the Dornian Heresy but based on our Great Sagas. Lednera
Hi members of The Fang and B&C, Today I have an interesting question that I think goes around the point of my thread. Life after blindness as it relates to the hobby. While for you guys who might be reading the thread from top to end of thread might read this as my repeating some of the same concepts over and over. Please keep on reading because I feel this is an important thing that we need to talk about. I was talking to some of the painters that we all know and love on YouTube and they shared with me how they are worried about themselves going blind. When we started in the hobby many of us had what would be considered perfect vision or 20/20 as reported by your eye doctor. Many of us know that vision starts decreasing as we get older in years. When I was told this I talked to them about things they can do in the hobby and how they can expand the horizons they already have as artists even if the vision they have is starting to fail them. I would like to take some of your time reading this post and translate the spirit of the Space Wolves into what we in the real world could do to face the adversity of the failure of our primary sense that we use in the hobby. As you know I am categorically considered blind by the laws of the United States of America. That means I have a hard time reading anything, I can not drive a car, and for crying out load I should not be painting small toy soldiers. While that is what the world around me told me I made a choice to challenge the reality that I am living in and that is what I ask those of you that are having problems with your eye sight at this time. I was born with my condition so I have lived with it all my life and do not have the experience of having perfect vision and going blind. What I can speak is only from the point of view of some one that has already been blind and what we have done to tell the world I am not "blind" but I am only a person that has physical traits that resemble the condition of blindness. In the aspect of interest lets look at ourselves as the Sons of Russ and the Allfather. In the fiction that makes our armies as interesting as it is we have learned of the curse of the Wulfen. The curse has placed something inside of ourselves that we need to fight with on a daily basis until we reach an understanding with it. In real life you might wish that your eyesight could be healed through medical science or maybe spiritual belief in miracles. The truth of the matter is that either of the choices could work for a time but the ultimate form of healing is the same that the space wolves have to deal with. The first stage to deal with what some consider the curse of blindness in the hobby is come to terms that you are loosing your vision. It is normal and it is part of our growth as humans as we get older. The next step is ask yourself not what you are no longer able to do such as doing freehand or painting your own models. This things come to be very hard to deal with especially if you were a talented painter before you started to loose your vision. I found that I was a crazy person doing things that others thought were not possible and I did them because I was not told i could not do them. I picked up the brush and painted. I was not a good painter but I kept doing it over and over until I gained some level of skill that good painters could acknowledge. You might have done exactly what I did but the question always remained are they saying that because they want me to feel better? The answer is not a simple one but for the most part they recognize that you are doing something beyond your capabilities. If you can learn to accept the words others tell you and move forward one day you might be a better artist then you were when you had good vision. See the funny part of having almost no vision is that you pay attention to what really matters. You focus on the best details a model has and work on them and polish those things. I do this through the use of a video magnifier but I see my work and think it is ugly as hell since I have to see it at 100x magnification some times. I know I am ranting at this point and making a point that is personal to each of us is not easy. I wish all of you who read my thread to know that even if you are going blind that we do have a life in the hobby after our condition and that unlike myself you guys have someone that you can talk about it with. I have been in the situation and have made a way to help us all out so feel free to PM me or post here I can write solutions to problems you might have or advice you guys on how to deal with it. Let me know if this is something you guys wish to learn about and I will be happy to write stuff in a more formal fashion for all of us to use as a primary to go beyond the limits of our physical bodies and carve a saga in the real world. Lednera
Greetings The Fang and the B&C Community, Today I bring a story of cunning savings and stewardship of our own financial resources. It is a well known fact that no matter what paints we choose or what model kits we buy from the open market this days our hobby is a very expensive one. When it comes to most of us we have a day job that might be able to pay for our hobby but I would like to address the younger generation of hobby enthusiasts and gamers in our community who might just be graduating from high school or just started a higher level of education. As we all know it is never easy to keep up with the demands of the Meta-Game in our own regions. Players buy the new models and rule sets and go at each other with little thinking about how much the hobby is really costing. This means beyond the cost of regional currency, the man-hours we use to build and paint the miniatures and the time we spend playing the game. If I could give advice to the new players who are finding inspiration in this hobby it is that you do not need all the name brand items or the latest models to have fun in this hobby. One of the most misleading aspects of the hobby is that we have those that are oriented to the hobby aspect and take it all the way to a art style when they produce the paint jobs on the models. The result is that those new to the game wish they had the skills to paint as those they follow and wish to be friends with and learn from them. On the other side of our community we have those who specialize in the mechanics of the rules and go all out in tournaments with mini-max lists. This in turn makes the new players feel like they will never be able to win in a tournament setting. Truth be told i have been in both sides of our hobby and I can tell you that both sides have a dark side but they also have a shining example of how we can keep the spirit behind the hobby alive. Let me introduce to you the concept of responsible hobbyist concept. In this method we do not spend all our money we make to make our hobby a central part of our lives. In truth I was not sure I should post this in my WIP/Blog thread here in the Fang as it is not directly a Space Wolves topic. I however feel that if I were a Wolf Lord in the real world that I should give guidance to the new Blood Claws that are coming to know what it is to dedicate the time inside our hobby. Some of the simple strategies to be responsible in the hobby is buying common household items like paper cups and paper plates to replace paint mixing bottles and pallets for painting. This items are inexpensive and can last a long time especially if you are just starting your army or coming back into the hobby. When it comes to paints I guess we can choose the one that is best for us but I will say that the new product line that Games Workshop has put out for paints is not a bad choice for a starter player. They are not the most cost effective but they are specially designed with a new hobbyist in mind. When it comes to how you should play the game it is your choice but maybe a responsible way is start with a small army like 500 points. This will teach you the basics and also allow you to enjoy all aspects of the hobby without taking to much time out of your real world responsibilities. The point is to have fun that is why we play this type of games but if we let our own ambition of having a huge army all painted and buy all the models at the same time we will burn ourselves out even before we start. The key is start small and grow with your army. Some advice on how to do this with your gaming group might be start an escalation league were you increase by 250 points each month. This will give you time to build paint and play your new models little by little. In the end this post is focused on advice on how to manage your money so the hobby is something you enjoy instead something you dread and keep buying more things and never using them. Lednera
Hail Brothers of the Fang, I am back to continue working on this project after having to take care of real life. Running your own business takes priority over gaming and modeling but with the new release coming up of Warzone Fenris: Curse of the Wulfen I think it is a good time to try and jump start this thread again. I will post updates later today with some work in progress for all of you to enjoy.
