Working too long on a model....

This is kind of a weird topic (not that I ever start weird topics... whistlingW.gif )

Anyway I've got a lot of projects on the go (I admit something is going to give because I have my time split up too much to continue at this pace) and I've said in the back in my mind I'm not going to allow myself to drop the Dark Angels.

So for Dark Angels I've tasked myself with painting my favorite pieces even if in game they are... substandard. I finished the Nephilim that way, and was pleasantly surprised how many people really liked it.

Oddly enough I love the Dark Talon with its flying piece o' Caliban church bits. I really do like it. But I have to buy that one as I skipped it because I couldn't find a use for it...

Fast forward to the Shroud speeder. (also love its counterpart but it's nearly unusable now) I've been painting the Shroud on and off for months... really but not too long at any one time. So I decided that's it, I'm going to finish it. Now for the past... month I've probably doubled my time put into it. I don't think you can tell I've put that much time into it but one thing that's happened is I decided to do a bit of a lighting 'glow' with it from the window.....

I've spent so much time balancing it (the light effect) that I can't tell if it works or not anymore.... overall I think I've lost my judgement of the model. I really like it as I come to the home stretch but I'm sure you've done this too where you spend so much time with a model you can't really judge it honestly anymore. I'm ready to pitch it now, and try something else but I'm probably a week or two from finishing it.... this happen to anyone else? Have you just stopped the project? Or just force yourself through it?

Pics or it never happened

I have a little more "hardcore" story for you, when I started my adventure with warhammer fantasy you were still able to buy pieces of miniatures separately, back then I wanted to start chaos army and I had a vision of flying daemon lord/chaos lord converted from archaon on foot (lmtd edition model, I won two of them by accident on ebay, one of them never painted)

One of his painting versions was ravaged by frosty effect of purity seal, that stopped me painting for one year, in this time I gave up playing chaos and wanted to play Bretonnia, so I have painted him several times.

When I started DA I mused on using second body to make my own version of terminator librarian to represent him.

Now as I slowly begin to move to Privateer Press gaming systems I muse which army to choose so I can strip him out once again and paint him so he can fit well with this particular army. So far he has been painted 14 times

These pictures are in no way by any order. Last uptade for him was resin base. He is my zen, my masterpiece, my avatar, pinnacle of my painting skill (nowadays almost pinnacle) I re-paint him whenever I feel I can do better, he probably swam more times in acetone than any other mini in the world.

Latest picture of him with some of the models I consider best painted by me, ever;

I am still forcing my way through Space Hulk and the Crimson Slaughter from Dark Vengeance set. All these damnable painting competitions have me put them on the back burner to show my solidarity for the Unforgiven. Once complete, I have to pick up where I left off.

The odd part is I'm using the Crimson Slaughter to work on a feathering technique for my Fallen that have gone to Khorne. The armor is black and fades to red on the hands and feet. I just can't get a good result. And with the stop and starts, each one is slightly different.

Larhendiel, that's a pretty nasty story. As an aside please beware of the the BnC rules regarding posting non-PA pics.... but yea, I see what you've done there and while I haven't done any single model 14 times, this is exactly why I gave up my wolves. I probably painted 30 figs in about 4 different versions of 'space wolves grey' and then got rid of them..... very sad.

I agree that sometimes you have something in your head and it just doesn't come to fruition in reality. I've done this many times too....

In this case I just kept falling in and out of love with the model (ruleswise). When so many codexes were removing cover as a core mechanic of the game, it became less and less useful. Now in 7th I have to confess I don't even use the Shroud....

Second part of the story... with the Shroud I painted some of it in pieces. There is this sort of 'gunners barrel' the gunner sits in. It has a unique top to it that caps the ornate barrel he sits in. And guess what? I lost the barrel.

The only place selling that bit was in the UK (I'm in Canada). That sucked re-acquiring that. lol

I'm going to push through it though. I think it looks fine, I'll go with that. Ignorance is bliss. :)
