L30n1d4s
So, I think SW has a codex that easily stand on its own, without requiring allies (especially if you count the Champions of Fenris supplement) to be competitive. That said, it is always fun and challenging to see how they might perform using different armies as allies. Right now, I am thinking about the possibilities of using Militarum Tempestus (i.e. Storm Troopers ;) ) allies for the Sons of Russ. Part of the inspiration is this photo: http://www.wall321.com/Military/Armored/guns_futuristic_weapons_armor_ammunition_digital_art_artwork_armored_suit_1024x1598_wallpaper_17846 .... which, as you can see, is Storm Trooper type soldier with a very "wolfy" aspect to it. Imagine a couple of allied squads of Storm Troopers modeled like this (or at least the heads) supporting your Primary SW detachment ;) Better yet, from a gameplay perspective, all Storm Troopers can deep strike in (using your Grey Hunter Drop Pod Locator Beacons to home in on, if necessary) and can put out very significant firepower, between their Hotshot lasguns, special weapons, and orders. Since Space Wolves lack Sternguard and Centurions (the two elite "shooty" SM options), Storm Troopers (or should I say, Sturmwulven ;) ) can provide Logan Grimnar and his thanes some very affordable low AP fire support. Alternately, if you want to be extra safe, have the Storm Troopers ride in allied SW Drop Pods for danger-free, turn 1 arrival. On top of all this, Militarum Tempestus can take Valkyries (great anti-horde shooting and good rides for Grey Hunters or Wolf Guard, all at a much cheaper price than Stormwolf/Stormfang; also, SW units can Grav Shoot insert out of allied Valkyries, something they can't do out of SW aircraft) and Taurox Primes (again, an Excellent transport for Grey Hunters and also very tangible fire support platforms). Both of these options can be taken as FA options, so SW units can start the game inside them with no penalty. Storm Troopers synergize well with SW HQs, such as Wolf Priests (who give themselves PE, so when attached to a Storm Trooper Squad, give them Preferred Enemy as well as Fearless and FNP(6+); great for mass plasmas on a Storm Trooper Command Squad, for example) and Rune Priests; go PML(2) and take Divination, and watch them combine with Militarum Tempestus Orders to really amp up Storm Troopers shooting; e.g. cast Prescience on a ST squad and then also issue the order making all their weapons have Rending... Wraithknights and Riptides will hate this! ; alternately, go Biomancy on the Rune Priest and either put out a ton of extra witchfire shooting to supplement the Storm Trooper special weapons, debuff the enemy with Enfeeble (works GREAT with S3 Hotshot Lasguns) or buff a Command Squad with 4 x Hotshot Volley guns with Endurance... FNP(4+) and Relentless means you can move and shoot 16 S4 AP3 shots at 24" a turn.... who needs Sternguard now, huh??!! ;) Finally, Militarum Tempestus come with two very useful formations, one air-based and one ground-based, which give them some additional rule buffs and which can make great (but also somewhat more expensive points-wise) allied formations for your main Space Wolf force. The ground formation gives you lots of Taurox Primes and would work well supporting a heavy Thunderwolf force, since the enemy will have target priority issues against such a mobile combined force. The air formation gives you the ability to bring in multiple Valkyries out of reserve on a single turn (for a "Beta Strike" capability, especially against hordes, like Orks) and also lets you accurately drop a lot of low AP rapid firing weapon precisely where you need it on the board... this works great for a more foot slogging type SW force, with big packs of Bloof Claws, Long Fangs providing supporting fire, and Lone Wolfs deep striking into the enemy DZ to disrupt his maneuvers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/296537-space-wolves-and-storm-trooper-allies/ Share on other sites
Kasper_Hawser
This is basically my game plan as well once I pass the 2000 point mark in my wolves: to paint and use the sweet Tempestus Scion models as elite Aettguard units. Urauloth
This is the plan for my Sanctified, use deepstriking scions as ap3 fire support for either my objective holding squads or my... not-thunderwolves, as needed. As for my wolves, I like the idea of fielding Aettguard, but I'll be sticking to power armour. Already overflowing with cultists in my heretical endeavours, and since I'll be adding scions there...
