How to build my GK's

Hey all, I'm an imperial guard player and absolutly love my meatshields err guardsmen! However my regular opponent has recently made the jump to deamons, mostly FMC, combined with necrons,or tau, or bloodangels... my guardsmen have some trouble dealing with all the summoned deamons and his FMC's. considering that i have multiple versions of almost any imperial guard vehicle, and over 150 infantry models i decided i could treat myself to a small allied force. given that my trouble usually hails from deathstar units i thought force would be a good addition to my imperial guard ranks, and so opted for allying grey knights.

I've bought the following boxes:

-2 x GK terminators

-1 x GK in PA

-1 x dreadknight

and already had a stormraven which i recently repainted.

I've build the dreadknights with the forcesword, psilencer and heavy incinerator. I'm not sure if it's the optimal build, but it certainly looks cool imo and can deal a lot of damage when deepstriking.

I'm planning on using a nemesis strike force, but i'm unsure how to build the GK in PA and TDA.

hence this topic, to find out how you would build these models with only those kits available. i think 1 terminator will need to be converted into a librarian, another into a captain/grand master, leaving 8 terminators to be build into either all normal termies, or 5 normal termies and 3 paladins. which is best, and how would you outfit all (the librarian, grandmaster, termies, etc)

here's a WIP of the dreadknight:

looking forward to your opinions!

That's a very cool look for an NDK! Defintely demonstrates the shooty nature of a Gatling Psilencer!

For what you're building, I feel like you'll get more mileage out of building only GKTs. The sweet spot for Paladins is units of 5 or 10 (allowing for 2 or 4 special weapons). At 3, I'm not even sure you can take one special weapon. The other thing to consider is that Paladins are still really expensive. How you equip your GKT/Paladins will depend on what role you want them to fill. Murder-face 3+ armor (or worse) CC squad, storm bolters and falchions, with a few halberds mixed in. Or you could keep them as (relatively) cheap, durable all-rounders (swords and storm bolters). You'd be remiss in not including at least one hammer per 5 GKT, if for no other reason than adding a little bite and some anti-armor CC ability.

Since you've GKT for troops, I'd build the PA guys as Interceptors to roll with your NDK.

In regards to the Libby and the GM, stock on the Libby (staff for sure, storm bolter, combi-weapon, or nothing depending on points, add Liber to taste) seems the way to go. Since he'll be in the squad with the GM, he's definitely a support character. I think there's a lot of debate on how to best equip a GM. Unfortunately, our best option for AP in combat is the Daemonhammer, so that coupled with the Cuirass is popular, but lots of people like the Soulglaive. Like the GKT, it will depend on what role you want him to fill.

what options does one run best on interceptors?mixed combat weapons,if so which? and which special weapon, if any at all?

here's a quick mock up list i've made:

-librarian; nemesis warding stave 110 pts

-grand master: soul glaive, cuirass of sacrifice, bone shard of solor, psilencer 220 pts

-5 terminators: 2 x nemesis force sword, 2 x halberd(1 with psilcanon and justicar with psilcannon), 1 x deamon hammer 209 pts

(add on 3 additional terminators, 2 x falchions and 1 x deamon hammer so i have 2 of everything?)

-NDK: personal teleporter, nemesis greatsword, gatling psilencer, heavy incinerator 220 pts

-stormraven: TL MM, TL AC,hurricane bolter sponsons 230 pts

989pts, say 1000 pts'ish list so i can easely add this to my imperial guard army

(add on 3 additional terminators, 2 x falchions and 1 x deamon hammer so i have 2 of everything? and the interceptor squad (what wargear))+ inquisitors and warbands to create 1500 pts stand alone lists if i feel like it

Inteceptors are good to have 1 incenerator per 5. Jump in, make some bbq, pour on some sweet baby rays for a snack then cAn jump around and make some more bbq. I would say regular swords on them since their a cheap harrassment squad.

Also on your gm you have 3 relics. Can only have one per char per game.

Incinerators are kinda a must for interceptors. Because essentially it makes their 8" Flamer template, into a a possible 38" template because of the once per game shunt move. Plus only 5 points!

And of you're left with a few posts left, it might be worth giving them all falchions, then they'd be able to act as an assault unit too.

Terminators are looking good. never put an incinerator on them because they are double price for no real reason, plus terminators are our only reliable unit to shoot psycannons/psylencers. Always need 1 hammer per 5, and if you have the points spare, throw in some falchions to make them more assaulty.

I always give my grandmaster a hammer, simply because he always ends up in combat with a character with terminator armour.

And the dreadknight you should always give a heavy psycannon, but as your main force will he guardsmen, I doubt you'll need it lol. So your setup for him seems good too.

Other than my own personal opinions, your list looks fine. We are extremely limited on the lists we can actually effectively make so can't really go wrong.

Only problem with yours is that you can only have ONE relic per character per army.

i already thought my character was a bit OP if facing deamons! :p

so i've decided to go for cuirass of sacrifice, but what weapons should i give him? i think a deamonhammer is a waste on an I 5. or should i just use draigo, his stats seem ridiculous! 4 S7 AP2 attacks at I4 will ruin everyone!

The cuirass seems to be everyone's favourite for the GM :P

and if you're not taking a hammer, then the best weapon is the falchions. There were some mathhammer posts a while back, and the extra attacks from the falchions always outweighed the extra strength of the helberds, even without hammerhand. The only time you will need helberds is with hammerhand and when you're going against toughness 7 enemies, but at that toughness you should be using hammers anyway.

So it's either a hammer or falchions haha ;)

I'd say if you're not fighting 2+ saves on a regular basis, you could go 'Soul Glaive' on your Grandmaster. Its not that pricey and its absurdly good once you get 'Force' going, especially with his high WS6 and 4-5 attacks. Cuirass is another good option if you just wanna take a hammer (for all comers) or falchions (to keep him cheap). Definitely consider a psycannon on him too, its halved in price since the last codex and at BS5 its very nice.

Terminators should be psycannon and 1 hammer default. Falchions depend in your points, I would take them if you can but cut them if you need points elsewhere.

Dreadknight should always have a teleporter and greatsword. Heavy psycannon should be your first choice of ranged upgrade. Heavy incinerator is nice but Interceptors usually take them anyway, and you have 'Cleansing Flame' from Purifiers for horde clearance (its absurdly powerful if you can catch multiple squads and double cast due to Combat Squads). Gatling psilencer is another solid option as a secondary, although it is a bit situational (you're basically relying on them failing a save and dying from 'Force' being up).

Interceptors with incinerator. I'd leave them as is as far as other upgrades go, they're already quite expensive. They offer a very reliable Turn 1 gank of annoying support units like Pathfinders, Scouts etc. They can also ruin Devastators, Lootaz, Long Fangs and other non-melee fire support units who typically don't come in large squads and are thus susceptible to losing big chunks of firepower from a few failed saves.

At 1000 points I'd avoid taking two HQ's, and if anything I'd be taking the Librarian over the GM, simply because he's much cheaper and psychic support at 1k is golden. At higher point levels your need for a tanky Warlord is higher. As a sidenote, you can make one of your Dreadknights a Warlord if you like, its amusing to tell opponents that they have to take it out to get Slay the Warlord.

somebody got some paint on him today!

first try at a purple powerweapon. for my space wolves and imperial guard i always took a blue effect, but wanted to do something else for my GK

Only after painting the dreadknight i noticed i used a different pot of silver for the stormraven. I'll see which i like most on my normal grey knights. either way i want them to look dirty, their armour covered in grime, oil and mud

i'm actually not that skilled in painting, and the modeling was only done by using standard plasticard tubing and some kitbashing. i only used some GS to stuff the heavy incenerator so the "arm" stayed locked in.

the painting looks so good in my opinion because of the washes. i paint the miniatures quite sloppy actually, relying on the wash and inks to fill the recesses and make the details look good. before my washes i really dislike how my GKs look actually!

give it a go, and do some kitbashing yourself, i'm sure you'll be able to make something that looks just as good as mine! msn-wink.gif

edit; just to prove my point:

PRE-washing:

http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb281/amorfatipictures/DSC_7999_zps29c4abcc.jpg

note how the entire shoulderpad is just covered in gold, no heed for any of the fine detailing on it

after washing (other model, but you'll get the idea

http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb281/amorfatipictures/DSC_7997_zps04daeee2.jpg

suddently the wash and inks have brought out all fine detailing again

I always use a wash. I made myself a custom dark wash out of the old devlan mud, black ink, blue ink and water. I'm out of it now and I cannot seem to replicate the results. I didn't have a method, I just winged it until I got the results I was after.

So now my models are all different shades from my washes lol.

Anyone have any good recipes or know of any good ready made stuff?

Great job on the painting and modeling, i've done purple force weapons on my grey knights too they're in my sig if u wanna check them out... Any who keep up the great stuff

i like it,especially the crips painting and detailing. i don't have the patience for all that! ;) what purple did you use, mine always seems to look rather dark, although that could be the light offcourse.

Thanks, fort my purple i use thé old GW paints and i start up with a basecoat 50/50 abadon black and liche purple, then start highlighting using liche purple, then genestealer purple then i wash it all with druchi violet then edge highlight in genestealer purple... Hope that Helms

PS our painting methods arent that différent...
