Do Smash attacks get assault bonuses?

As the topic heading says, do smash attacks get assault bonuses?

Like, if a monstrous creature assaults and nominates to smash, it makes a single attack at double strength, but does it still gain the +1 attack for charging?

I'd say no, but my friend played it otherwise.

Copy and paste from the rulebook.

"All of the close combat attacks, except Hammer of Wrath attacks, of a model with this special rule are resolved at AP2 (unless it’s attacking with an AP1 weapon). Additionally, when it makes its close combat attacks, it can choose instead to make a single Smash Attack. If it does so, roll To Hit as normal, but resolve the Attack at double the model’s Strength (to a maximum of 10). Furthermore, a model making a Smash Attack can re-roll its armour penetration rolls, but must abide by the second result."

So I'd say just the 1 single attack with no assault modifiers at double strength with pen re-rolls. Not 2, because what if there was a monstrous creature with furious charge or something, that grants +2 attacks from charging, then that's kinda broken, to have 3 attacks at double strength, ap2 or less, with pen re-rolls.

Essentially the Smash Attack works as a Set Modifier, reducing the number of attacks to 1.  As such this is applied last after all other modifiers.

So the Daemon Prince gains D6 attacks, then has the number of attacks reduced to 1 by selecting to Smash.

Now in this case, the Daemon Prince only has the Daemon Weapon to attack with (as it only has 1 Melee weapon) so still has to roll on the off-chance that a 1 is rolled and the Prince therefore suffers a wound and has his WS reduced to 1.

I think your friend is mis-remembering rules due to how it worked in 6th. The old rules halved the attack characteristic which allowed other things that were not tied to the Attack value to have effect. Charging, Rage, wargear used to add to the number of attacks even with Smash.

With the new rules, it replaces all attacks with 1 Smash.
