Are Drop pods worth it?

Hello, as the title says. Is a Space Wolves Drop Pod army worth it any more.

 

With 1500pts I get:

1 WP + PP, 9 GH + PP + PG + CCW

3x 10 GH + PP + 2x PG

10 GH + PP + 2xMG

10GH + 2xMG

 

Where as with a Space Marine Drop Pod army I get:

1 Chaplain + PP, 1 SMS + PP + CCW, 8 SM + PG + PC

3x 1 SMS + PP + CCW, 9 SM + PG + PC

2x 1 SMS + PP + CCW, 9 SM + MG + MM

 

 

With the SM you get more fire power with points left over and the option to combat squad where as

with the SW you'll be better prepared for CC.

Drop pod lists are much the same as last edition. Still pretty good. Alpha strike WG squads are more expensive, so you'll be doing less of the one trick pony units, and instead be dropping full squads. In fact, I think if you are dropping full GH squads we're better off this edition, as we can take both special weapons and a WGPL with combi.

2 plasmaguns + combimelta + plasmapistol = 7 plasma shots on the turn you land.

A pure DP list is done best with Ultramarines. Having said that, SW are not far behind with their own squirks, in some respects may even match UM.

When you go away from pure DP list and dedicate some points to enhance your alpha strike (like with TWC charging T1-2), this is where SW pull ahead.

We also have Ulrik, who is basically the UM tactical doctrine on crack, albeit only in a 6" radius.

Last time I played was a few games in 5th.

 

I'll have to make some PG and MM Long Fangs, stick them with some Grey Hunters and try out some UM tactics :)

 

An extra 20 Attacks for being charged could be useful with the Space Wolves. I'll need to get some games in to find out what suits me best.

Still have to decide for Locator beacons or not for second turn Drop.

 

All Drop Pods is just for my Rapid Deployment list for clearing a deployment zone for the rest of the force to arrive.

1500 isn't enough for pure drop pod lists. You'll be lacking too much in number of units, mobility and fire support. It gets more viable around 2k but a combined arms approach is probably more effective there too.
