we know that there are a lot of ways to build a guard list. I prefer huge masses of infantry. So the though of relying on just a handfull of squads is strange.

I guess I will just start with 3 squads, each with 3 plasma guns. ( I have a lot of those )

For a heavy weapon I think Auttocannons, I only have 3 of those.

This Should be plenty of work and not too much to become irritating.

I think I want to actually build a list, maybe 750 points. The goal being several detachments set into fixed lists and points.

More to follow.

Well the idea of having detachments at 750 points I would definitely do a full infantry detachment and a full armored detachment.

Infantry Regiment:

Lord Commissar, Power Fist

Platoon Command Squad, Vox, 3 Grenade Launchers

Infantry Squad, Vox, Flamer

Infantry Squad, Vox, Flamer

Infantry Squad, Vox, Flamer

Infantry Squad, Vox, Grenade Launcher

Infantry Squad, Vox, Grenade Launcher

Platoon Command Squad, Vox, Autocannon

Infantry Squad, Vox, Autocannon

Infantry Squad, Vox, Autocannon

Infantry Squad, Vox, Autocannon

Infantry Squad, Vox, Grenade Launcher

And then a 750 Armored

Knight Commander Pask

-Punisher, Heavy Bolter Sponsons, Smoke Launchers

-Demolisher, Plasma Cannons, Smoke Launchers

10 Veterans, 3 Melta-Guns

-Chimera

10 Veterans, 3 Melta-Guns

-Chimera

Add them together for a real solid 1500 point list, and ramping up to 1850 or more is just a matter of adding another Russ squadron.

You have so many miniatures you could probably do a full 750 pt artillery detachment too.

That's what I would do at least, but obviously your playstyle might be something completely different

This looks good. I would have to make some changes based on models I have. But nothing I think too major.

For one, I don't have any Melta guns in my steel legion. A minor problem over all.

I don't know How I feel about Pask. I know how good he is reported to be. And isn't too expensive an upgrade.

I might like a tank commander.

I think for 40 points, the Rending on the Punisher is really great, especially in combination with his Warlord trait. The Tank commander is good, but not as amazing as Pask is, and what else are you going to do that is equally as deadly with 40 points? That's the way I look at it at least.

Didn't mean to leave you hanging Mr. Bleak. I think he's fine and a very good choice over all. I have issues with Special characters.

I just don't really use them. If I was working on a competitive list for a tournament then sure I'd think him over and try to fit him in.

I don't really care to use special characters in my usual games.

But I didn't dig this up to beat on pask.

This weekend I will be packing up some wargames stuff for next week of house sitting. This includes the Steel legion.

I will pull some of it out to use as veteran squads and start to build a list the rest I am going to try to trade and sell when I get back.

I really would like to use some of these models again. But I really need to down size that collection.

As for the models I keep, I blame most of you. That's right it's your fault that I am going to keep a smaller but combat ready army.

And Thank you for talking me into it.

over all I feel like I have so much more then I should and it's way too much to take to the shop for  a game. This left over collection will become part of the Mordian 50/50.. legionnaires attached. They will fill the role of recon ahead of the main body of troops, disrupt enemy movement and draw enemy units into the waiting gunline. I will also be repainting one Chimera for each squad in that element.

I don't know if i will be able to post any next week but the week after should have one or two updates.

I found yet another Blog stuffed full of Imperial Guard pictures!

http://spunkybass.blogspot.com

I really like the Company painted in very WWII colors. I think it's amazing that some people seem, to me, to just have a clear idea of how their army should look and can then execute the paint jobs. For all my "ability" at painting.. I never feel like I have that clarity.

Maybe I over think it. My first Space Wolves army was the worst. I couldn't decide on which grey I liked.

Now or maybe again, I am not only looking at my Steel Legionaries to pick out my Veterans but am planning to paint them.

I think I may have a friend with an Osprey book I  can use.

I will be in full Imperial step again very soon.

After my foul green skins were once again unable to deliver the savage beating that the fish heads so rightly deserve. A massive brake is in order. And frankly I am fed up with this the TAU..

Their time has come.

I am planning several tank squadrons.

Purge the alien. purge them a lot!

Lots of work to do to day.  I have a 1500 point game on Saturday against WLK's wolves.

we're going to play a Maelstrom mission but we don't know which one yet.

I am planning to send a Chimera platoon or two out to grab up the objectives and am thinking I want to use ratlings and sentinels.

I might use a tank commander and a commissar. I want a very mobile game I may deploy some mortar teams to cover close objectives.

Transports.  Why are they so strangely written. A unit in a transport is fearless. However, they still have LD checks to make when the transport takes damage. I can't express my.. disappointment with the rulze team.

I'm just sayin..

List is done.

1500 points for maelstrom.

Senior Commissar hult

Ratling scouts A,B,C

3X3 squads

1St and 2nd recon duty platoons

PHQ 1/2

lascannon, Krak, bolt pistol

Chimera, Auttocannon turret,H.Killer, Smoke

1st squad 1/2

Missile launcher, flack

Chimera, smoke

2nd squad 1/2

Flamer

Chimera, smoke

Heavy weapons Support Duty.

Mortars 2 squads

Auttocannons 1 squad

Vanquisher, Lascannon

Should be 1995 in total

This should provide me with a very flexible army. I am going to try to minimize my losses and work hard to score Objectives.

I am excited to try the ratlings.

I went with a stock Commissar lord to be cost effective. I might move the H.Killers down to the transports for the flamer squads.

It might not make too much difference.

This should be a balanced list for the game, this will be WLK's 3rd game of 7th.

I have the flacks and the auttocannons for AA if needed. and the chimera auttocannons as well.

Would have liked two more of those... But isn't that always how it is. Need more auttocannons!

A valid point. WLK says he's only using one flyer and no big guns or heavy support. I'm mostly interested in putting wounds on his squads. TDA will be a huge issue but I plan to run away a lot. If I had more points I'd have a little more of everything.

If your referring to the Vanquisher, I really want to shoot that at his transports! I'd also love to swat his flyer with it.

Maybe a main battle tank would be better. I have a large list of things I'd also like to stick in.. Cyclops teams..... Devil Dogs!

Oh, what about a swap? Devil dog for the vanquisher? Melta!

I have as much success lasgunning Terminators down as anything else, spam fire has always been a weakness as they're usually low number squads. I think a Devildog would be more useful than the Vanquisher, it can turn it's hand to hunting Marines if there's no decent armoured targets :)

I looked at my list again and moved a few points around, I'm now going to try a Heavy weapons team with flack missiles.

And have added grenade launchers to to two squads.

The Vanquisher will stay in the list today. The devil dog is the same points so I'm not feeling the trade. I plan to use the long range of the vanquisher, and avoid getting close.  A better move would have been a bane wolf. But Not today.

I am considering dropping the PLC Lascannons for auttocannons, Using those points to add back in a ratling and 2 more grenade launchers.

Two meltaguns might be a better option.  Or drop the lascannons for 2 Meltaguns in each PLC?

Noooo :( Sounds like it might have been an interesting game though if you gained an early lead so I will be interested to see your report on it. If things are turning on turn 3 then fighting back is always going to be difficult! Hopefully you can do better next time :)

The game went a full 7 turns. And in the end the Guard were tabled.

HA!

Emperors Teeth!

I will be dropping the mortar teams for a Wyvern. Should be as good or better and will free up 55 more points. I am going to try to add a sentinel or two. And The missile teams are dismissed as well.

I think I can better spend those points I need 145 for my devil dog. so a few Ratlings will be let off the hook as well. I will maintain 1 squad of 3. They were a lot of fun. One lone and fleeing Ratling, was assaulted, rallied, inflicted a wound on the Grey hunter pack he was fighting, which was saved and made 8 out of 9 saves needed! and was promptly choked to death.. for his trouble.

The Vanquisher killed a rhino and hit WLK's StormWolf a few times but couldn't do more then scratch the paint..

Full report to come some time next week!

Looking back at my list I don't see a place for my Mortars any more. I think it's time to move on to the Wyvern.

It's looking a little better for the points and not being guys on the ground. Moving Mortar.

I guess the question is how many. Maybe 2 in total for a while. In my 1500 point list they will be in units of 1. For the Flex.

Still looking over my other choices. I am planning to drop the Missile team and plan to find the points for my Thunderbolt. I may drop a platoon for a vet squad as well, adding at least one of those squads to the remaining platoon.

I'm painting Scions for a friend right now. Looking at his models get's me thinking.

Everything's coming along.

Alright you...

But you are right. I do like those models. I've seen some kit bashed that look stellar.

But I have to save up for those.

I have "rehomed" The Steel Legion. in a trade to a friend for his....fishy heads... Which I am going to sell.

He goes through armies way too fast but he wasn't getting enough games, players fear the tau as it turns out..

The whole trade was his idea. I'm fine with it. Still have all my tanks and transports too.

and despite the...shrinkage... the IG now feels more like a proper sized army.

I'm neck deep in a commission job again and expect to be for a few months.

Oh.. Just realized I gave him the codex too... Well that was stupid. Hummm..

Oh well?  I can always get a new one? ...  Ya. A new one..

Not to worry I do have it for my tablet.

And. I'm still planning on a small Knight detachment, next year. After I am all done with my commission and paid!

I'm thinking 3 tops. and painted..Red. To contrast with my blue jackets.

More when it happens.

Thanks for reading.

How can a smaller Guard collection feel like a proper sized army? Surely it's the opposite! I hope your friend takes good care of the Steel Legion. After wasting his life with the blue space monkeys it makes sense he'd want to graduate to a real army :P
