Combat squads and GK warlord traits

So I've come across a situation a couple times and I wanted others opinions on the issue, or any solutions you use which I may have missed. The situation is thus:

Librarian as warlord. The army includes one or more units of 10 models capable of combat squading. Basically I want to know if I am getting gate of infinity BEFORE I choose to combat squad or not.

The BRB is silent on the exact timing of psychic power generation and warlord traits, except to say that psychic powers are generated "before the game begins" -BRB pg 23.

Similarly, the choice to combat squad is determined "immediately before determining your warlord traits" -codex GK pg 231.

The problem is the lore master trait which confers an additional roll on sanctic. Now this doesn't necessarily mean you must wait to generate powers, but it does pose an interesting conundrum. This is what I have been working on, lemme know what you think..

1. libby rolls powers on sanctic until he has generated GoI or exhausted his innate rolls.

2. I make the decision to combat squad, or not.

3. I generate warlord traits- if I end up with lore master I roll again on sanctic.

So that part is pretty straight forward and I think completely within the rules.

However, ideally If GoI is generated prior to exhausting the innate rolls I would like to stop and move on to combat squads and then generate warlord traits.

Once I find out if I'm stuck with lore master or not I could continue to finish psychic power generation. Sounds a little hooky I know.

Any problems with this? If so please give a page ref. Thanks.

From what I have read and interpreted as well as some companions is that you roll off for your game and table fornat if its not table specific. From there you roll for powers before anything else as this is all predeployment /pregame. From there you throw off objectives then combat squad as its the last possible thibg to do before rolling initiative which is essentially when the game is beginning.

So powers before combat squad by interpretation of my self and 5 others to answer your q.

Couldn't it actually be;

1. I make the decision to combat squad, or not.

2. I generate warlord traits- if I end up with lore master I gain a roll on sanctic.

then

3. libby rolls powers on sanctic until he has generated GoI or exhausted his innate rolls.

Only 1 and 2 here have defined times.

The Generation of which powers the libby has can happen before or after 1 & 2.  But not between, due to the 'immediately' clause.

I understand what your saying but I do not know why. GOI when used only effects the Librarian and the unit they're attached to at the time its cast and not for the unit it was a part of at the beginning of the game?

If the Libby fishes GoI, you might not want to Combat Squad, but gate a max unit around instead.

My understanding is that you roll for psychic powers and warlord traits prior to deployment and combat squad is done upon deployment, so the choice of whether to combat squad comes after gaining GoI or not and seeing if he gets Loremaster.

Warlord traits are after Combat Squads so if you rolled the Warlord Trait that gives the Warlord and 3 other units Infiltrate, you could not then split them to have, for example, 6 infiltrating units now, 7 with the Librarian.  It's done in that order on purpose, specifically says under Combat Squad "... before rolling for Warlord Traits." so everyone stop cheating now.

Ideally you would want to know what you are packing weapons/powers wise before assigning roles to units, but ideally you would like to know what your Warlord is doing before you split the party, so to speak, so the concept of ideally is already right out the window.

In that vein, i would do rolling for psychic powers after Warlord Traits; it seems they are going for the randomness of war.  but again, that's an opinion; there is nothing showing when to roll for powers.  if you want to roll for them before even rolling a scenario, do it.  if you want to do it right before rolling to Siege the Initiative, you're welcome to do so.  just make sure you and your opponent do it at the same time whenever it is.

The most annoying aspect of all this is they don't clearly spell out the progression even in the main rulebook. Like, a simple table summary of 'do this, then this, then this' would be great. Instead you have to fish through a dozen different paragraphs and read very carefully to find it out. When they could've just told you

Honestly, if you want 'Gate' that bad, just take Draigo. Rolling on randumb tables is a pain, and 'Sanctic' already suffers from being a lore we mostly know already.
