Damn, I'm getting long in fang, my Saga...

I haven't done this in awhile, and with a new Codex and a new edition I felt it a good time to tell of my Saga since the begining.

IMG 0945

My Saga is quite long, begining back in 2nd edition.  Wolf Lord Jon  led a massive Space Wolf Great Company.  Jon himself was a man of action not words, and as a young Wolf Lord was not one to embellish his armor with the  superstitious trinkets and totems that so many other Space Wolves would.  (I used a Plastic Space Hulk Terminator with a Storm Bolter and Power Sword for Wolf Lord Jon)
Jon would always march to war with his Wolfguard, a unit of Space Wolf Terminators 10 strong with 3 Heavy Flamers, and 4 Assault Cannons, not to mention all those power fists.  In support of them strode the twins brothers Frik and Frak who served the Chapter together since their time as Blood Claws and were incased into Dreadnoughts on the same day to allow them to continue to serve together, one was armed with an Assault Cannon, the other a Plasma Cannon.
The Spearhead of the Great Company was 2 five man packs of Blood Claws with Jump Packs, a 10 man Grey Hunter pack in a Rhino (with all the goodies, smoke,  extra armor, ablative armor, dozer blade, Hunter Killer Missile, and an extra Storm Bolter)
The star player of the spearhead however was a Predator Annihilator known simply as "Buster" equiped with Lascannons all around, a super charged engine, extra armor, ablative armor, and smoke this tank would lead the charge, using its super charged engine to crash into enemy lines, make use of its one turn to point towards the enemy, and fire at 3 separate targets.  It would then brace, as the enemy turned all of its guns on it, as the rest of the Great Company would move in to support.
Buster stills sees service in the Great Company to this day

Predator, showing my age...

Wolf Lord Jon's Saga grew long, as his victories mounted.
A long campaign raged across one winter and the Space Wolves were undefeated.
In the final battle one last enemy needed to be bested, this Eldar force was also undefeated and had managed to avoid facing Jon and his Great Company all Winter, now only these two armies remained.
A massive battle was fought (6000 points a side) each side with a single titan in support.
The Warhound titan was the center piece (Armorcast used to make Titans for WH40k in those days and had rules for their use)
Game set-up took about an hour and a half, the Eldar force was massive with an Eldar Scout Titan at its center.
Wolf Lord Jon, had first turn.  The Space Wolves advanced and set up lanes of fire.
The Grey Hunters Pack, wanting to earn their place in the Great Company's Saga fired the opening shot.  The Rhinos Hunter Killer Missile.  This missile somehow made it through the void shield and struck the head of the Eldar Titan, penetrating, this caused a chain reaction to the core and the Titan exploded!  the explosion took out no less than two-thirds of the Eldar force.
The Eldar Surrendered immediately, and that Pack of Grey Hunters became heroes...

Then came 3rd edition...

I had mixed feelings about 3rd edition.  Sure the game was faster to play, but the Space Marine codex which was released with the boxed set release was very bland, and for a short time I had to make due with an appendix codex at the back of the book.  Thankfully this was short lived as the White Dwarf Space Wolf "get by" codex was quickly published.

Wolf Lord Jon donned his Power Armor, and now wielded a Frost Axe and a Bolter, he would now ride into battle with the Grey Hunter pack that had earned that honor "Pack Titan Slayer".

With changing times and new theatres of war, Wolf Lord Jon changed the Great Company's composition.  I would attend my first GT in 2000.  60 Players, and it was the only GT in the US, was held in Baltimore Md.  and registration was done via snail mail, we had to overnight our registration with our lists to ensure a slot, it was sold out every year.

Wolf Lord Jon would lead this force with 3 full Grey Hunter packs in Rhinos and 2 Blood Claws packs with Jump packs.  This force would meet a new foe that Wolf lord Jon had never seen before, the Tyranids.  The Space Wolves fought bravely, but the Tyranids overwhelmed the Space Wolves and defeated them.

Shrugging the butt-whooping off the Space Wolves went on to have 4 victories, 1 tie, and 1 loss that weekend.  Gaining me 2nd over all at my first outing.

Only my paint score kept me from winning over-all.

Wolf Lord Jon would continue to lead his Great Company in Baltimore in 2001 (5th over-all, but an improved paint score)

and would lead his Great Company to victory at several local Tournaments, until he was mortally wounded by a Khorne Berserker Lord

Jon would continue to serve though, as a Venerable Dreadnought, (made from the brand new plastic kit).

Wolf Lord Jon, now a Dreadnought would continue to lead the Great Company as two Wolf Guard Battle Leaders "Thorgrimm" and "Erik" would compete for the position of Wolf Lord.

By the time 2002 came around the Rhino rush was in full effect.  and the Great Company would switch from fully mounted to occasionally having a large Blood Claws pack on foot with a priest.  A small Wolf Scout pack would round out the force.

The Rhino rush was a very effective force in those days, Khorne Berserkers, Space Wolves, Blood Angels all ran rampant across the battle fields, once unloading and charging they would sweeping advance right into the next foe...

then came 3.5...

3.5 hit, and for some reason we forgot how to charge from our transports.

My army was primarily geared for close combat, and I needed a way to get my Packs into combat reliably.

The Land Raider, was a true beast on the battle field, I decided to field 3...

Wolfguard Battle Leader Thorgrimm would lead a GreyHunters pack in one, Wolfguard Battle Leader Erik would lead a GreyHunters pack in another, while a Wolf Priest would lead my Blood Claws in a Crusader.

a Land Speeder and a small unit of Scouts rounded out this force.

This version of my Great Company would go undefeated for quite sometime, the might of the Land Raiders was just too much for many armies to handle in those days.

With the highlight being me going undefeated at a rather large Tournament at the Rogues Den in Delaware.

Its reign would be short lived however, as 4th edition entered the picture.  Assault Cannons would gain rending and an extra shot, and melta would become more dangerous than ever.  My Land Raiders may as well have been Rhinos.

Back to the drawing board.

I decided to start from scratch and began to paint a new army.  Thorgrimm and Erik both went to the Venerable Jon for advice.

An idea started to form...

I painted a hybrid force with a Rhino, a Razorback, my Predator, and a few Drop Pods with an assortment of Grey Hunter packs and Jon back in action deploying via Drop Pod.

My ground forces were quite frequently decimated, while my Drop Pod units would bear the burden of the majority of the fighting.

Slowly, I painted and added more and more Drop Pods until my entire army was Drop Podding in with the exception of my Scouts.

Thorgrimm for the first time donned Terminator armor

Jon received a new paint job

IMGA0428.JPG

he can be seen above, standing in the rear...
I had 2 units of Wolfguard Terminators with all the goodies, 2 Assault Cannons in each unit with an assortment of Combi-weaponry and close combat nastiness, and of course Runic Charms for everyone.
These units could withstand a ridiculous amount of fire power, frustrating the enemy and leaving the rest of my army to run rampant.
It was around this time I competed in the very first Hard Boyz Tournament and went all the way to nationals, only to have all the missions null and void my Drop pods! "Ouch!" oh well, was a blast.
It was also around this time I joined the Mod team for the Fang.
We had many great discussions about Drop Pod tactics right here on this forum.
The Great company continued to evolve, and the fighting styles of Thorgrimm and Erik began to effect the tactics used...

Thanks for the comments guys!

My pure Drop Pod force while effective was getting stale, and people were starting to become accustomed to it, and were better defending against it.

I needed to again adjust my tactics to meet the battlefield needs.

I split my Great Company into 2 formations.

My Ground force would be led by Wolfguard Battle Leader Erik "The Master of the Hunt" he would be on a bike with a frost blade, and lead a Blood Claws Biker pack, with a Pack Leader, a Pair of Grey Hunter Attack Bikes with Heavy Bolters, a Land Speeder with Heavy Bolter and Assault Cannon, and my Wolf Scouts would round out my Ground force.

Wolfguard Battle Leader Thorgrimm would lead my Drop Pod Strike Force with a Terminator Pack, 2x Grey Hunter Packs, a Blood Claws pack and the Most Honored Brother Jon the Venerable Dreadnought, all in Pods.

Variations of this force would be in attendance at many Grand Tournaments across the country and would be featured in US WD 325

Pictured above is my Great Company as it appeared towards the close of 4th edition. Much more than 1850, the variety of units allowed me to field quite a few variations of my standard "Bikes and Pods list"
Then 5th edition arrived...

I love it Littlbitz, what a great saga smile.png

Now get on and start explaining your tactics with those two unusual lists you posted recently. smile.pngsmile.pngsmile.png

One of the things I have always loved about your armies is that you don't follow the "popular" lists. You go for something unusual - and something you LIKE.

You always do well with those lists as well - which just goes to show what a good general you are.

The saga history above just goes to show how long you have been doing that.

Are you a Long Fang Ancient yet? Or are we installing you in a Dreadnought?

HDL

5th edition came along, and proved to be quite an interesting edition for me, I moved away from my Drop Pods, and to a more Bike oriented list.

Thorgrimm, now the Great Company Wolf Lord took to riding a Space Marine bike, in his Runic Armor with Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield and Saga of the Bear he weighed in at the cost of a Land Raider!

Erik, the Master of the Hunt would ride his bike, and carry his Frost Sword into battle.

2 Blood Claw biker packs with Attack Bikes and Attached Wolf Guard Pack leaders (all with Melta-bombs) would form the core of the army.

The rest I would alter according to mood, or mission, by this time my army had grown to become quite large, so I really had a field day switching things up from event to event.

I even attended a Mechanicon GT and played in 2 events, a Friday night Tournament and the actual GT.

I fielded 2 Armies my Friday night Army was an advance strike force with all My Bikers, and TWC

the Saturday and Sunday was the core, with my Infantry, Dreads and Preds,

I did set myself some ground rules for army building though, By this time, my Great Company had developed quite a back story.  Thorgrimm is very superstitious, and will never have Rune Priests accompany him into battle unless under a direct order from the Great Wolf himself.  (and typically Logan himself would actually be leading the force with Thorgrimms Great Co. in support).

The aggressive nature of my Great Company meant very few survived to Long Fang status, only one pack of them with 5 Heavy Bolters!

So in an edition where multiple Rune Priests and Missile Launcher LongFang spam reigned supreme, I fielded neither...

Well, 6th hit, I kinda consider this a dark period for my Great Company, I took a short break from my Space Wolves and painted an Iron Warriors army.

However, I did field Thorgrimm's Great Company on several occasions

Erik Master of the hunt, frequently took to the field mounted on a Thunder Wolf

Wolf Cav Dude...

I also liked to field Logan and his "Drinking Buddies" my HeavyBolter Long Fang pack with the Old Wolf giving them relentless as they strode across the field of battle laying down heavy bolter fire...

WIP of Logan Grimnar

Above you can see my version of Logan Grimnar

I would also frequently field Arjac Rockfist

SW 003.jpg

I Wolves only saw action in local play during this entire edition (my Iron Warriors would be my Competition army for 2 years)
As we move into 7th, with a brand new codex, I am quite excited.  This is the anything goes edition, and my Great Company is undergoing massive changes.
Originally I was going to start from scratch, start a brand new Great Company, but that is nonsense.  My Great Company is quite large, so why not just continue to add to it...
Next, my experiences thus far with 7th

Ah, and here we are in 7th edition already.

I took my Great Company to the field of battle at the Nova Open with a brand new codex, in my first real tournament of this edition.

photo(2)

I took quite a few troop choices, and the army was led by 4 Wolfguard battle leaders, using the Wolves Unleashed detatchment at in the Space Wolf Codex.

I took lots of bodies in this list, and really just wanted to see what people were fielding in 7th edition, and how my Great Company would fare in this new edition of the game.

I was quite pleased, and while I didn't win all of my games, my Great Company put up a hell of a fight.

photo(7)

Above you can see the hero of the weekend, Sven Titan Slayer.  He dropped 3 of those Knight thingys over the weekend, and I am going to be making a new version of him as I am promoting him and awarding him some Terminator armor...

Storm Wolf

My Storm Wolf was another star player over the weekend

My Thunder Wolf cavalry were too few in number, 3 plus a battle leader was not enough

I learned quite a bit at the Nova in regards to what people were fielding.

Big Stuff...

photo(9)

everybody had lots of big stuff, my thought?

I need more Thunder Hammers and Storm Shields

In 2 weeks Thorgrimm will be leading his Great Company to battle at the Battle for Salvation GT in New York, and 2 weeks after that its the Mechanicon GT in Philadelphis Pa.

Some new additions

Erik the Master of the Hunt has been given a jump pack

IMG 0881

I have a unit of Wolfguard in the works to accompany him.
I have also  just finished a unit of Thunder Wolf Cavalry
