Dark Vengence is taking over!

This past weekend I was given another set of DV chaos. I now have 5 Helbrutes and about 20 or more unused Chosen. It seems like I can always use the cultists but what to do with the rest?

I have 5 plasma chosen painted along with 3 bolter chosen without powerweapons, an axe guy for the chosen champ and I think 6 of the others built up for regular aspiring champions for the rest of the army. Is there any point in having any more?

I might make a second Chosen squad built for close combat but that costs a ton of points for what you get. I could use all the Kranon models for powersword Chosen and convert another model to have a flamer. I still think the unit would not be viable, tho. Too much risk for too little return.

So is there a good way to take a chosen squad other than 5 plasma guns?

Any other ideas about how to convert them?

You could wait till the renegades lists are redone this year, there may be a warband/formation that catches your eye. Or trade them for other models.

As for chisen units, i do run a CC unit in a storm eagle/spartan. Any mark works and you can still mix special guns in there. Lord, 3 claws/mauls 2 melts and a few bodies is a fun unit. Check out the kharne tide posts for more ideas.

I appreciate the shout out Emperors Immortals.

Jacinda, I run two full squads of chosen kitted out for close combat and they have gone above and beyond to bring victory for chaos. Am I correct to assume you now possess 5 sets of darkvengeance? That means you have close to a hundred cultists half of them for range and the other half with close combat weapons. You will find - if you choose to go down this path - that cultists are the filler to the chosen's speciality. Where the chosen hit hard where it counts, the cultists are there to do the grunt work. Take a look at the Helbrute dataslate.

How is this on topic? Well, chosen are meant to be equipped for a specific role which they will excel at. Consider them a combination of close-combat oriented cult marines and havocs. Given the appropriate special weapons and close combat weapons they will destroy any target with only monstrous creatures and 2+ armor saves being a real stumbling block. Even then you can equip them with the Mark of Tzeentch and power axes or power fists to kamikaze the enemy deathstar. It all depends on what you want to accomplish with the squad.

Personally, I find that chosen fit quite comfortably as anti-hoard/meq with the Mark of Khorne. A single squad can unload 50 attacks on the charge which will happen so long as you deploy well inside of a landraider with a dirge caster. I have swept through armies of Imperial Gard, Space Marines, and Tau with little more than a single squad. Obviously you must reach assault range first, but once there you are golden.

Finally, I suggest taking into consideration that all of those beautiful sculpts constitute a rich ground for detailed bits you can spread amongst your army. I myself possess something around 4 sets of Dark Vengeance and have gone to some effort to cut apart and repose the many bodies in the sprues. I now have a new chaos lord, a banner bearer, different chosen and a variety of other models. You need not be limited by the current configuration of your models, in fact it is merely a suggestion of the miniatures potential. Obviously they are quite beautiful, perhaps the best sculpts produced by Games Workshop yet, but that does not mean you need remain idle with your scalpel and greenstuff.

It is entirely up to you what you want to do with those chosen. Really, the only miniature out of the set I have avoided working on is the bolter carrier, and that is due to my lack of green-stuff tools and experience.

A word of note: Though I describe my chosen as god-killers and game changers it is entirely due to my aggressive playstyle. I don't play to keep my specialists alive I play to complete the mission, if that means I have to sacrifice my deathstar so as to grab an objective in the late game, protect my chaos lord, or distract the enemy artillery then so be it.
