Xenology?

I was just wondering, does anybody know if the Xenology book is still considered canon to the main 40k?

If so there are some pretty screwy ideas in there about the origins of both the tyranids and the tau, I'd really like to know if I can tease my tau playing buddy about his army being nothing but an eldar science experiment.

Simple answer: It is if you want it to be.

Here is an awesome article by AD-B on the subject of 40k cannon:

Now, I know that his opinions are his alone, and not representative of the Black Library as a whole, but this article is pretty much perfect.

I liked Xenology. I thought the way the story went caught the grim dark feel of the setting well. It was also a somewhat unique way to tell the tale. It was obvious to me that they were making some flawed assumptions and the Tau stuff could have been propaganda.

I also liked Simon Spurrier's Night Lord book. Granted this was one of my first dives into the lore of 40k so conflicting canon that he gets criticized for didn't really register with me. After more reading of the lore I got around to the Soul Hunter trilogy and was pleased with the references made to The Talon Master, even though Talos didn't have a great opinion of him.
