It's my understanding this is going to be a soft reset. If that's the case the codexes should still be usable. if that's the case, I get the SM codex will come right out of the gate, but it's the BA codex I'm hoping for a little bit of time for.

Though with the Ba focus, you're probably right...

These may be of interest to some of you on here. Wicked Brick have just released limited edition perspex boxes for our characters (Dante, Mephiston, Astorath, Lemartes and The Sanguinor). There is 100 available for each character and it comes with the name plaques as well.

Not sure what the postage costs are outside the UK but I've heard it is pricey. Also some people may find the price of the boxes a bit much anyway.

I've got some of their stuff and I quite like them, so have splashed out on them.

Lots of neat stuff in there. Been reading through it. I think it's an overall bonus for jump pack marines between cover being -1 to be hit and charges being against any eligible unit in range.

Wound allocations also benefit the uniform stat lines of Marines.

The 9inch coherency range is going to stop a lot of backfield metagaming to block off the entire threat of deep strikes in the back field.

Alright Red Team?

It's been a while since my BA have seen the table, maybe 8/9th ed since I've used them regularly, but I'm looking at running them again in 11th. My army is primarily first born with minimal Primaris units, and id like to get up and running with important units asap so:

What are some key units that find their way into all of your lists? What are the 'strong' units BA can take?

I assume

Mephiston

Bladeguard

Sanguinary guard

What else?

intercessors are good for objectives - sticky objectives is handy. Them getting so many shots if targeting a single thing is good too.

assault intercessors with jump packs are good but I assume you already have RAS that can just be used as those.

I personally like company heroes, though their price increase did dampen them a little.

infiltrators are good screening units.

ive seen suggestions that suppressors might actually be useful this edition - their models still suck though and they’re hardly easy to find

Death company continue to be heavy hammers compared to vanguard vets or regular jump intercessors.

Land Raiders are real tough still. Redeemer cannons are still awesome and lascannons help with reach the assault lost trend to not have.

I am convinced stormravens must be good to be 280pts, but the jury is out on that one.

Don't overlook a little anti-tank as our melee units can struggle against such targets (although Red Rampage does allow us to punch upwards at a pinch). Ballistus Dreads and Gladiator Lancers are popular for this role and I like one of each as I dislike running duplicate units if possible. The classic Land Raider also does pretty well at anti-tank with 4 Lascannon shots, an HK missile and a multi-melta whilst also making a perfect delivery system for Bladeguard).

Some people like running a pair of DC Dreads to deal with enemy tanks/monsters and this is particularly popular in the Rage Cursed Onslaught detachment.

Baal Predators are nice for Overwatch but rumours suggest Firstborn tanks are going to Legends when the new Codex drops so bare that in mind before investing. On the other hand, if you like the Baal then maybe get it before it vanishes.

A 5-man squad of Sternguard or Assault Intercessors with a Captain with Rage Fuelled Warrior is still a nice combo and a great spoiler in case your opponent tries to roll a Daemon Primarch or similar bag threat through your lines.

I have nothing to base it on - well not until they brought back the regular landspeeder and GW's long history of recycling - but I think all the bespoke first born units will eventually move to the new base kit.  I think there's going to be a Baal Gladiator, a Stormspeeder Vengrance, I think Bjorn becomes half Redemptor, half Brutalis.  I'm not sure Furioso gets its own kit or of it just go to out to everyone by staying Brutalis.

Hi !

I gave up the 10th but I want to try and catch up the 11th.

I have got a few primaris units but what I really love is using my beloved firstborn marine (it took me far too mutch time to paint them to not use them on the table).

For some units it’s easy.

Assault squad are identical to the assault intercessor and these unit are useful. Most of the firstborn Tank still effective, veterans are the now the same for firstborn and primaris, etc…

But some other units are much more difficult to use : box dreadnoughts, devastators, razorbacks, and in particular, the tactical squad.

Could you help me find a way to used this iconic unit, the tactical squad ?

At the start of the 10th I had a few ideas for using them :

Firstly with the Ironstorm detachment. The single re-roll for a hit, a wound or a damage roll works well with the tactical squad split into two squads of 5 men, each equipped with a special or a heavy weapon. I put together a list with the goal  of having re-rolls for hits and/or wounds rolls, to keep the re-roll provided by the detachment rulls for the damage rolls. Thus I have a very reliable  lascan or melta.

To achieved this, I’ve added a few dreads (aura allows re-roll one on hit rolls) and places the 5 men squads with melta inside razorbacks (re-roll for wound).

Two problems :

3 tactical squads with 3 razorbacks and 1 or 2 box dread that is a lot of points. I don’t have room for much else.

Event with all the re-roll I only have one powerful gun by squad, so the damage are not guaranteed.

That idea didn’t work very well. Firstly,

because I don’t play very often. Secondly,

because my opponents - even though they tend to talk it easy - use play effective units. So it’s hard to hold. Finally, an army with a large numbers of heavy infantry is tricky to manage; I don’t have the weapons for it.

I achieved good result when I tried to focusing on one flank: I then have enough firepower to destroyed units in one go and advance across the battlefield, while leaving tactical squads ti hold the objectif

The second idea was to use flamestorm detachement. Bolters are not assault weapons which means tactical squads can take full advantage of the detachement rules, and this also benefits melta weapons. I haven’t tested it, but my goal was to load all the squad into rhinos or razorbacks, as the detachement offers some interesting tools for the transports. This time, with half squads with all the special and heavy weapons and half squads  consisting of marines armed with bolters to contest objectives.

In the 11th, the two detachements mentioned aboves have the mission “purge the faw”, so you need to make kills to score points. And I don’t think you can score many kill points with 30 tactical marine.

So I was looking for another detachement, and member of my club suggested I use the bastion detachement with all those battleline units to auspex scan enemy units. I like the idea, but I’m struggling to build the reste of the list after the tactical squads. Do you know any good synergies to use with the bastion detachment?

You have a couple of options. Legends look like they will be getting better support in 11th edition so you could just run them as Legends. The other possibility is to proxy them as Intercessors. Sergent, 3 bolter dudes and one with a missile launcher looks like an Intercessor squad with Auxiliary Grenade Launcher to me!

Devastators are harder without using legends but you can take 3 Multimelta dudes, stick them on 40mm bases and call them Eradicators. 5 Plasma cannons are a Hellblaster squad. 5 Missile launchers are a Desolator squad etc.
