no, its just a gap in the rules, because order of operations is important in any game that involves any level of maths. Most games actually do cover the order you apply modifiers, 40k didn't. They fixed that with the FAQ.

The fact that it was FAQ’d kinda proves that it is a convoluted mechanic if a bunch of people weren’t sure how it worked.

Not convoluted. Just could be understood either way, and various other games have done it both directions too.

Simple fact is, writers should have included an explanation in the core rules of what to do for the situation.

definitely shouldn’t have been on the item, because that causes duplication.

much like many games tell you how to handle rounding.

Oh for sure they should've had all the FAQ stuff in the basic rule book. I don't disagree about that.  I just think it makes a lot of sense as to how it works, and it for sure isn't some exception to the rules as it was claimed to be. It's quite literally following the rules.

And I agree that the way it is makes it a far more useful thing. Especially with our new red thirst mechanic it's actually splendid!

Holy Emperor! I just devastated a friend with Custodes in a 2k game. It was over turn 3 with 49 - 15 and four models left of his army. I lost three DCs and my Brutalis which was a distraction carnifex anyway. DC with Lemartes was absolutely BRUTAL. Managed 21 fist/Eviscerator/blood crozius wounds charging some guys and trajan. And that was turn 3 after they wiped another unit on turn 2. Dante and the guard didn't even need to come down till turn 3. Means I was 400p down for two rounds. I felt a bit emberassed because this was no fun for him. His saves also weren't the best, but also not that bad...

Got my first codex game tomorrow and I made this list for it. The local RTT was also announced yesterday for December 7, so that's also cool.

Spoiler

October dataslate list.

Jump captain 85 (with SG)

captain 90 (rage fueled warrior, with assault ints)

Libby terminator 75

Lt 90 (speed of Primarch, with BGV)

Techmarine 55

Heavy ints 95

Assault ints 75 (LRC

6 bgv 180 (LR)

6 SG 270 (dedicated RI target)

5 termies 170

3 Erads 100 (LRC)

5 JAI 90 (deep strike)

LR 240

LRC 220

Brutalis 160 (dedicated rapid ingress target)

1995

I'm also toying with dropping the brutalis and techmarine for a squad of regular ints and 3 bolter inceptors.

if so, the LR would have the AI+cap and ints, and the LRC would have the BGV and Eradicators.

Any opinions or advice would certainly be appreciated.

Edit: I've also been considering dropping just the brutalis and replacing it with a squad of regular ints and a squad of eliminators, allowing me to keep the techmarine.

@DemonGSidesdon't have a judiciar. I'll probably get one eventually, but it's not currently an option.

Free fall-back-and -charge has been pretty nice on these guys tbf.

any thoughts on the options I posted below the spoiler box?

Yeah I think the fights first is more impactful and always on, whereas we can use 1 CP to fall back and charge if we need to.  I think both are definitely viable, just whichever you've got and want to prioritize.

I haven't played BGV since we got the updated detatchment rule the first time so I'm not 100% on what is the best numbers wise but I think either way works. Just not a fan of one and done things.

So, just had a game vs IK, mission was the ritual, with a very unoptimised list (I was expecting thousand sons or guard) but managed to sneak a wun playing to the mission. Lost my DC with lemartes to take down a moirax armiger, when they were then promptly jumped by a gallant and another moirax, but dante and 3 sang guard took out his other knight paladin for a 13pt swing on the third (and last) turn. JAI and inceptors deep struck to get me assault on all fronts and steal his home objective, and made him pull back a unit to go chase them.

48 - 43 in the end.

Edit for lists:

Dante

Lemartes

Judiciary with rage fuelled warrior

10 man jump DC

10 man Assault Intercessors on foot

5 man JAI

3 Bladeguard

3 Bolter Inceptors

3 Eradicators

5 Infiltrators

1 Predator Destructor (las sponsons)

3 Sang Guard.

Vs

Knight Gallant with sticky objective banner

Knight Paladin

2 x Armiger Helverin

2 x Armiger Moirax

1500pts

For lists

so, how are people feeling about the wolves rumours?

Seems like they're getting around 5 characters, but also 5 full fledged units.

It feels pretty bad even to me that was broadly fine with our update.

Don't get me wrong, I think wolves getting full unit updates makes a lot of sense, they've always had more bespoke kits than other chapters. BUT at the same time, it still sort of sucks when it seems they're getting at least one completely new unit (like DA) as well as refreshes of a bunch of existing ones that realistically could have been upgrade sprues if it was good enough for blood angels.

struggling to feel happy for them right now so need some sage advice from fellow blood angels.

As I said at the time, I was actually pretty underwhelmed with our update to the point I have not bothered buying any of the new units. The new Priest is nice but I converted a Primaris one a whole edition ago. The Captain is nice but I already have 2 Primaris Captains on foot as well as a converted Jump Pack one. DC being reduced to just an upgrade sprue was disappointing and the sprue itself was not a patch on the old DC kit or BA Tactical squad kit. The new Sanguinary Guard miss their wings. I preferred the old Lemartes but I disliked Astorath who they pretty much ported straight to plastic.

I am hoping that the new SW update is better but at the same time, I wonder if I will end up just feeling saltier that the BA upgrade should have been so much better than it was.

At the moment I am mainly consoling myself with the fact that the Codex is pretty cool and I am having a lot of fun playing with my old models.

My catharsis here is that youre finally admitting that our update was pretty rough lol

In a vacuum it's fine, but in comparison it's like damn do GW not like BA.

I... didn't actually say that?

I still think ours was not bad compared to DA and BT, I also still like our upgrade sprue. And I like the sanguinary guard. I'd have enjoyed a full DC kit, sure but if I were to pick between a full DC kit or losing two of our characters (as that would have numerically brought our release inline with DA and BT) - I'd pick the approach GW went with. If it were losing two of the above and getting a totally 100% new thing.. I'm less sure, though I don't know which characters I'd drop.

BUT, there's a huge difference between what we got (and what DA and BT got) and what wolves sound to be getting. Current rumours have them at around 5 new units, which is... a lot. Importantly, that includes at least one totally 100% new unit (possibly as many as three of them are new or wild reimaginings though).

so don't get too cathartic on my account

That's what most of us here were complaining about from the get go. It's good to see you see the light; this was a "fine" refresh, but when compared to the contemporaries, BA refresh is easily the worst and by a wide margin.  One cool hero, one meh hero, one hero that has become cooler once people realized that 'Eavy Metal isn't the best paint job always, and 0 new units, one poorly done refresh, one butchered character refresh and then "deal with your upgrade sprue" for everything else.

It's a bummer. Especially when BT had an amazing refresh, and even the slightly less good DA refresh makes ours look downright bland in comparison. Now we only have rumors of SW, but it seems like they're getting EXTRA love compared to even the DA.

It's hard not to feel like an unwanted child in the scenarios we've cooked up here.

Edited by DemonGSides

I don't want to get into the debate again with you on it seriously brother.

Suffice to say, I wouldn't call our release rough, but I'm absolutely jealous of what the wolves sound like they're getting.

I personally like all the characters and the sanguinary guard. I also like the upgrade sprue. I think our upgrade sprue is as good as DA and BT. None of those opinions have changed.

Would I have complained at bespoke intercessor squad, bespoke death company squad and a bespoke never seen before unit? Clearly not, but I was happy with our release (relative to BT and DA). The bit about the DA was specific to a totally 100% new unit (the ICC).

The wolves are, to me, the odd one out because none of the other chapters got 5 new unit kits plus 5 new characters (for a total of 6 when including ragnar, equalling blood angels who had 6 characters total). It's JUST the wolves that bother me because it seems like its just going to be on a different level to what any others had. But then again, I've been in the hobby since 2nd ed and Wolves have typically had more kits than any other chapter through most of the games history, so I possibly shouldn't be surprised.

I will say, thinking on it, at least we aren't iron hands, imperial fists, raven guard, white scars or salamanders to be fair. Those are the unwanted children and that sucks. We did still get a total of 6 characters alongside an upgrade sprue and a unit refresh.

edit:

for me, if I were doing a wolves update to be inline with the other chapters:

  • upgrade that would cover the various tacticus pack units, probably with a terminator axe and terminator torso on it too.
  • updated wolf guard kit (tacticus)
  • updated wolf guard kit (terminator)
  • njal
  • grimnar
  • arjac
  • generic wolf lord kit in power armour

And I'd have thought the above was super cool but not felt bad about it for what we got.
